Learn how to create cartoon animation in After Effects and Adobe Illustrator!
Open your vector graphic in Adobe Illustrator. Our main objective is to properly layer each graphic, so we can easily animate in After Effects.
You can do this by creating new layers and dropping objects into those layers. Or you can select the group and go to the hamburger icon, then click Release to layers’ sequence. Make sure all the layers are isolated. Then save your project.
In After Effects, import your saved illustrator project as composition.
Now inside of that composition you can animate each layer. Using the Pan Behind tool Make sure to move the anchor point of each object onto the actual object.
For basic objects you can probably use the basic transform properties and for characters, the puppet pin tool is a quick and easy way to animate more complex objects.
And that’s a quick breakdown on how to do simple animation in After Effects.

If you choose to import the ai file as a comp with layer size (not document size) then you don't need to adjust the anchor points. Also with ai layers it's best practice to turn on continuously rasterize (magic sunshine toggle) to keep them looking sharp

This explained everything clearly, if you are an "actual editor" you should know these already unless you're just an "editor" who copy pastes from long form tutorials, remember use tutorials as help not as the literal source of your editing work, do this if you actually want to improve in editing.

@@ImEli2215 for Character animation 1. Toon Boom Harmony - expensive- Industry standards - stiff learning curve 2. Animate cc - easy to use - if you planning make youtube videos then this is the best option. 3. Moho pro - awesome software- average learning curve - only selected studios use it. 4. Blender - free. - All in one 2d, 3d. - I have created 3d animation. Awesome software. Not created 2d so can't comment on that. After effects is good for text animation, image animation, video editing, explainer videos, motion graphics. Making character animation in after effects is very time consuming and its not user friendly. Lots of plugings available for riging but still it is not good for character animation. I tried everything. I strongly suggest create character animation in diffrent software and import it in after effects.

@ImEli2215 Moho should be the best. After effects does not support character animations natively, and you will need to buy other pluging that are sometimes slow and other times not very capable
