Thanks for the template! Don't forget to plan to relax and have downtime, too often I book myself up, then end up doing nothing because it's too much.

In Spain we can't plan our lessons at school, we are always teaching. We might get 30 min max. for that if we are lucky. That means most things must be planned at home. I don't even have the time to print the worksheets I need, so I usually need to arrive to school early or leave late. I am sacrificing too much of my personal life to make my lessons worthy for the kids. When I saw that you get 4 hours a week at work for planning I went nuts. Thanks for the video

I work in a small title one school and not only do elementary teachers not get planning periods, sometimes we don't get a lunch break; I eat lunch with my kids. I'm so jealous of her schedule!

Thank you! I am a retired educator that enjoys subbing several times per week. My time working is the easiest to schedule, getting other things done is my challenge. I use a bullet journal, but this will help create an overall plan to see where I am (or not) spending my time and what I need to adjust. My plan is to select a project then use the schedule to plug in the time to get it done...instead of just hoping to find the time!

If I had to do grocery shopping, I'd do it on Wednesday. Where I live, school districts have minimum day or early release Wednesday's so that's the perfect opportunity to go out shopping for groceries after school. Typically, the lines are shorter because of the lack of customers on those days.

There were some aspects of this that were valid and I use google calendar to block out my time for a lot of the items you listed so if anyone looks, they can see I am busy. That said, the idea that prep is nonnegotiable or that we can grade in smaller chunks isn't feasible. I am currently grading short stories for high school using a rubric, it takes me 30 min. to read and score each one and I only have 60 students. That doesn't fit in this type of work/life balance. My prep just these last two days back from break has been interrupted to 1) interview a para for a position we've been trying to fill for two months, 2) get our new counselor on board and trained in what we do and need, 3) helping a student with a social emotional issue. I get three preps a week, and one individual half day a month and I would be hard pressed to find even three preps all year where I wasn't pulled out of it do help out with a student, parent, or other staff member in need. I have to block in time from 3:30-5pm at school to do my real prep time and three days a week that is filled with school meetings, parent meetings, and IEP until about 4:30pm. In theory, your idea works. In the real world, this doesn't work as more and more we are asked to do more with less time. That is not to say, we shouldn't try or that we shouldn't create boundaries, but it isn't always as easy as just blocking out the time on a piece of paper. Our school has a policy that all work will be graded within seven days of it being collected. That means we have to block that time in. During this year, I would be hard pressed to find a school that was not short-handed with positions they couldn't fill or with frequent absences of staff due to Covid or quarantining. This will eventually pass, but we work as a team at schools so we have to pick up the slack and help out as much as we can. You usually offer a lot of very good ideas, a future video might include ways to find found time to get some life balance as we are all overtaxed at the moment. I know a lot of your ideas are geared more toward elementary but you have good information that can apply to all grade levels. I work in a K-12 public school and I can tell you this doesn't work for our elementary teachers this year either. We are all covering for each other so there is staff to meet students needs and I live in a state where our covid numbers are lower than much of the rest of the country. I cannot imagine what the teachers in the states where covid numbers are rising out of control are dealing with. Keep posting these ideas and tips and tricks. We are in a unique situation this year but much of what you share can be filed away for a year where we aren't in damage control mode. =) I appreciate your positive outlook and desire to support fellow educators.

At the end of the day, ask your cooperating teacher if they can give you critical feedback on your lessons and classroom management practice. My contract hours were always from 8:15 to 4:15 but obviously that included meetings, student arrival time, planning time, lunch, recess, dismissal, etc. so I personally would break it up in my schedule so it seemed less daunting.

As a type B person, this was a fascinating watch, but living my life based on a schedule is my literal nightmare lol

I completely get that! If you can function with a less structured schedule and still get the things done that you need to get done, go for it!

Yup... I'm type A! But, I get asked a lot about how I manage my time and get so much done... this is how!
