How to create a zipper scrunchie
Create a zipper/stash scrunchie using the burrito method. An invisible zipper in the seam of the scrunchie allows a wearer to hide small objects inside of the scrunchie
Supplies you will need:
5” invisible zipper that matches your fabric
4.5”x22” strip of fabric
1/4” braided or knit elastic-whichever is your preference
Scissors
Sewing machine
If you need a close up zipper view, then be sure to check out my video on that portion. It’s a great tool if you need a bit more help
As well, feel free to leave questions in the comments and I’ll reply or send a message through my Facebook page

Great video! I’m going to try this and make a couple for my daughter.

Will this work the same if you just have a regular zipper as opposed to an invisible one? Great tutorial by the way!!
@StitchtheDot
3 жыл бұрын
I did my first with a regular #3 zipper and it did work. I just found it to be a bit more bulky than I personally liked which is why I switched. Definitely use a zipper foot so you can sew close to the zipper teeth and then you will get a closer look to mine. And thank you glad you enjoyed it 😊
What portable machine can you recomend to me that can sew all kinds of fabric?
@StitchtheDot
3 жыл бұрын
My best suggestion is actually to check out a machine dealer. So go in and try. I personally sew on a Juki 2010Q due to the fact that I sew nearly daily and a lot of bags. It’s a semi industrial so can handle what I put it through. For clothes that I make myself and kids I use a Janome serger.
Great instructions very easy to follow, however, black zip on dark fabric makes it hard to see
@StitchtheDot
Жыл бұрын
That is true. I try to blend in the zipper with the fabric colour so its more of a hidden zipper. I do have the close up video which makes it easier to see
Could a pocket be added ?
Where did you find that beautiful fabric? I have looked everywhere for some.
@StitchtheDot
3 жыл бұрын
It was a complete fluke. I was looking in a local fabric shop (Lens Mill here in Ontario) and I saw it. They don’t usually carry Riley Blake so I bought a yard because I know it’s now near impossible to get. Have you tried Etsy?
@maryanglin869

@@StitchtheDot No I have not. Thank you for getting back to me. That is a perfect fabric.
This was my first burrito method. It worked except the trouble I’m having (I tried 2 other tutorials before yours with the same issue) is my zipper ends stick out when finished. I know you said something about laying one side of the zipper on top or something but I watched twice and can’t see what it is you are doing. Every scrunchie I make the zipper ends are exposed and I have to cut them down and it looks terrible. Can you explain that part to me.

Hey. So I think your best bet is to actually check out my 2nd video that’s a close up of me doing the zipper. A few others had the same issue so I made a second video. It’s been a while since I made one and mama brain has set in 😂 I can’t even remember how I made them

How can I minimize fraying on the inside of the scrunchie when I use cotton fabric?
@StitchtheDot
3 жыл бұрын
Your best bet is a zigzag stitch on a domestic machine. Or if you have other stitches, any that look similar to how a serger would finish an edge would work.
What about closing up the opening?? Won’t the items fall out if you don’t sew it closed after inserting the elastic?
@StitchtheDot

The only opening is the zipper which yes you would zip shut

Ami super ✌️✌️🤝🙏🙏🙏
My first try was such a total fail :( the lengths of the zipper were uneven, and when I finished stitching it at the end, the tops of the zipper poke out. Do you Have any advice on how to keep the sides even??
@StitchtheDot
3 жыл бұрын
Aw I’m sorry to hear that. Are you using a 5” zipper? If you are then no trimming is required. If you are using a longer one then while the zipper is closed sew over the zipper right before the spot where you will trim it to get the correct length. This will help keep your zipper sides lined up. I did post a second video close up of the zipper ends and how to sew and turn your fabric so they aren’t poking out. If you need more help feel free to reach out to me through my Facebook page Stitch the Dot and I’ll definitely do my best 😊

I personally don’t add tags to my scrunchies. Other items I do but not these. I would suggest adding your tag in as you are sewing the tube. So as you are sewing the seams together slip it into the seam where you would like it.

Well you are entitled to your opinion and there are many things in the world that have zero point. But those who do love these have plenty of reasons to use them. Its super frustrating that they keep making women’s pants without pockets so where else shall we put our lip balm, small change, etc? A scrunchie with a zipper pocket js a fun alternative to small items getting lost in the endless pit of a purse. So while you might not see the point plenty of others do
