How often should I cut the meadow. I have left a good section of lawn to go wild since March, there are some flowers but mainly tall grasses. How do I encourage more flowers?

There is great detailed advice available at pollinators.ie/gardens/ . You can cut when all or most of the flowers have gone to seed, but the mos important part is to gather up the grass cuttings and remove them afterwards, otherwise they will increase the fertility of the soil, and that encourages grasses and suppreses growth of flowers

@@LaoisHeritageForumIf you store the grass cuttings in one area of the garden, a heap of them, will the nutrients spread out from this heap and back into the whole garden or will they be localised where the heap is leaving leaving the rest of the soil to become poor which is good for the wildflowers? I don't want to pay to have grass clippings taken away, I live in the town. What is the situation with buring food waste in your garden, will this enrich the garden dramatically also?

If you dont mow, how do you keep the lawn short, and also keep the flowers growing?

The idea is don't mow as often, not stop mowing altogether. So mow at the end of the summer, and remove the clippings - this reduces the fertility and allows flowering plants that prefer lower nutrient soils to flourish, at the expense of the grasses
