How to Create a Studio Look Anytime | Gary Fong

Join legendary photographer and lighting expert Gary Fong as he shows how to create dramatic lighting effects, anywhere or anytime using on and off-camera flash and modifiers in conjunction with High-Speed-Sync to completely control, mix and shape your portrait photography.
Among the techniques covered are; how to create blue skies on a cloudy day, how to create dramatic black and white portraiture in broad daylight; how to take an ugly background and create a spectacularly dramatic background.

The Nikon Z9 does a fantastic job also. * Nothing better print than one made from a raw file made into a 16 bit tiff. * Godox makes great stuff! * Use a meter with manual. Get one photo ballanced and sync. all the rest to that one. * Black light gives weird purple.

Love the fact that they are using MEFOTO tripod in the ORANGE, I am guessing you went orange because Gary shoots on Sony, and it ties in BRAND wise.

Well, I have to say I did have a play with the overall technique and my stuffed dog came out quite well lol Only after I made a snoot out of a piece of cardboard :) As for getting 1/8000sec!! well my synch speed of my Nikon d7100 is only 1/320 so I will just have to settle for that.

It's kind of funny to hear some of the comments about Gary Fong and his products. I wonder how many come from people who actually shoot weddings, portraits etc versus bugs in the back yard. In any event, for event and wedding use, I've gotten excellent results with soft lighting, no specular highlights or blown highlights on a wedding dress etc. I use his old one for fill outside and have even lit groups of 20 people or more.

Optical is not infrared, it's photoelectric! It triggers by picking up flash! Hence , on a Nikon sb 800 for example, you have CLS, which is infrared remote triggering, and su4, which is " slave" , photo electric, or optical triggering!

That comparison around the 49 min mark is bullshite. You can't point the flash directly at her, then add the dong gong and aim it towards the ceiling, you wouldn't get that shadow or harshness either. He has some good info but he realy tries to oversell his products.

Maybe you should try a different modifier and also flat light the womans face so you don't pick up all the texture in her skin.

If you know all about flash photography, synchs speeds, rear and first curtain synch etc then you will understand what Gary Fong is talking about. If you don't then listening to him will be the most confusing thing ever! He constantly prevaricates, makes lots of assumptions of existing knowledge and never properly explains anything in simple terms. His description of CTO for instance which he says comes in halfs etc will leave most of these folks thinking WTF! Terrible.
