How to create a quick Twitter Poster to share new research (includes templates)

TEMPLATE HERE: osf.io/csxad/
Got research to share on Twitter? Do it the fun way!
The COVID-19 quarantine is slowing down scientific progress. Scientists are trapped away from their labs, scientific conferences are being cancelled, and we're all just waiting it out right the rest of humanity. But we can't afford for science to take a semester off. So here's a new way researchers can share their findings on Twitter in an engaging way that helps their colleagues learn without boring them.
Special thanks to @Vyond for sponsoring this video. If you wanna make stuff like this, Vyond is a fantastic tool with great #UX. It single-handedly got me started with motion graphics.

Fantastic! I didn't even know that Powerpoint could make animated GIF's, which is life-changing in itself.

Great concept. I'm looking forward to seeing people use it. As always, there will be a learning curve as people figure out how to simplify their work into short, understandable messages. But, the potential is really great.

Glad you like it! And me too! I love seeing people make these and then get like a million retweets. And of course, learning to cut is totally always the hardest, especially for scientists who are so trained to include EVERYTHING. It's all a learning curve for me too. Same as with the first #betterposter layout, version 1.0 is a neat concept, and then people try lots of variations (some worse, some way better than the original) and I'll try to iterate accordingly. Hopefully next year I'll do a sequel to this incorporating all the insights we discover between now and then!

damnnn you are so selfless! "Don't have to tag me" that's not what we hear everyday! Keep it up!

Haha seeing actual change is way more fun than citations! Also if it helps speed up learning among scientists, then maybe one of you geniuses will cure something faster that would have killed me. :D

Great stuff, thanks for the template! It would be great to have either a list of hashtags using this approach or an additional hashtag for it (a la #betterposter).

I tried it -- it was really easy and, possibly, a game changer for a lot of marketing and information.

#TwitterPoster as start! I'm working on trying to get together a list of field's hashtags. It's one of those things where if you're in the field it's common knowledge, but to find it for other people's fields is HARD. Very open to ideas!

Hello - great idea, but think you need a certain level of ppt to be able to get the Export and GIF options. I tried this for an assignment due this week, and ppt on my Mac computer didn't work and the version from the university did not have it either. Even on Microsoft from my husband's work, there was the Export feature but couldn't get a GIF. So had to export as video to MP4. Don't know if that will work on Twitter or not. Will see.

This is a bug I didn't anticipate! Sorry about that. You're right to export to MP4; that's the fix, and I'm starting to think that MP4 might be better overall than GIF because you can fully control the timing on each slide. Something for the #TwitterPoster 2 video I guess. 😋

@@MikeMorrisonPhD Yes please. I ran into the same difficulty. Excellent work overall in your videos though! Use it in an oral presentation course, challenging phd students to think and do differently.

This is great, but there are also some negative aspects. It is just impossible to stop these gifs and read them slowly. I don't have time to read and understand even this short title (being new to some topics or just due to bad english). I think that under every gif there must be a slide-by-slide tread with a separate photo of each slide.

Love this...But Ultima Thule is still not a moon of Pluto. 😂😂 They were briefly neighbors in the solar system but unlikely to be that close again for a very long time.

*slaps forehead* Yeah, I'm an idiot. Sorry. The hardest part of working across science is translating research from fields outside my own to use as examples. I learned an important lesson on this to always check my double-check my translations with the author before finalizing them. Hopefully the author (Kirby Runyon) can forgive me. Wish I could edit that scene!
