How to create a hand-painted skybox for Unity using Photoshop | Mini-tutorial

Ғылым және технология

A quick and easy tutorial on how to use Photoshop to hand-paint a spherical skybox to use in Unity, without the need for plugins, UV unwrapping, or other software. Using this technique it's possible to paint without deformation and at the same time take advantage of all of the tools Photoshop has to offer.
The graphics in the video are part of the Unity Open Project game "Chop Chop", which you can explore and contribute to here: github.com/UnityTechnologies/...

Hrmm... I followed this tutorial to the letter I believe, and the texture looks great in Photoshop. However upon importing it into Unity and setting up the skybox as you have it, squishes the skybox to a point at the top of the sphere. So looks great in Photoshop, but squished at the top in Unity. I set the default texture shape to cube, convolution type to none, and turned off mip maps. The settings are the same as yours. Im also using URP, does that make a difference?

I asked chatgpt: I'm glad the video was able to help you! As for your question, while it's true that many 3D applications, including 3Ds Max, often use texture images in a 2:1 aspect ratio (meaning the width is twice the height) for environment maps, it's not mandatory for the texture to be 16:9. The 2:1 aspect ratio is chosen for spherical or equirectangular projections because it represents a full 360 degrees horizontally (the width) and 180 degrees vertically (the height), which is the nature of a sphere. If you use a texture with a different aspect ratio, 3Ds Max will still try to map it to the sphere, but the result may look distorted or squished, as the image doesn't correctly correspond to the spherical coordinates. The 16:9 ratio you mentioned is widely used in film and television because it closely matches the human field of view, but in terms of texture mapping onto a sphere in 3D software, the 2:1 ratio is more common. It's all about the correct representation of your texture onto the 3D object.

How to "bake a skybox from within Unity"?

For some reason when I try to rotate inside sphere the horizon tends to fall on side, it makes me really sick. It doesn't work like 3:45 it rotates on different axis. And I have "Rotate the 3D object" selected.

@@CiroContinisioUnity What's inside your 3D tab near Layers? Yes Rotate is the tool in toolbar on top, but yours seems to be disabled. I don't have spherical panorama option in my version, so I used 3D -> New Mesh from Layer -> Mesh Preset -> Spherical Panorama hoping that it's the same thing. I've no idea what am I doing as I never used 3D tools in Photoshop before. I think I rotate the camera, but something goes wrong.

  • @Nervniyak

@@CiroContinisioUnity I think I found the reason. If I set rotation of camera and spherical panorama to all zeroes, it rotates normal at first, but then somehow I manage to switch from camera to sphere and rotate it too, thus getting camera and sphere rotated to arbitrary angles that no longer perpendicular to common sense :D Thank you for the great tutorial!
