Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you. I do go on motorcycle road trips and will use this but I was actually looking for a what that I could create a map of ham radio repeaters that I could access offline. Thank you again.

very clear and useful guide. However, this does not work for me; I see the exported KML file is VERY small (11k...), and when I try to put the phone into 'airplane mode' and open it, I see nothing... am I the only one to have this problem? (did you try opening it in airplane mode?) thanks for your help, Arik

After sending the KMZ file to myself (Mac to iPhone), it opens it up in Google Maps, not Google Earth. How can I change that? I'm trying to be able to view a map I created in MyMaps, to view offline.

Thank you for uploading this information. You referenced that this is "all offline" after sending the .kmz file to your phone. If you truly had no internet (wifi or 4/5g), how could google earth download to your phone the satellite images that is Google Earth. I know that you can download areas of a map in Google Maps for offline use, but I'm unfamiliar with that same feature in Google Earth. I'm a little confused on this subject.

How do I get it onto my phone. News able to see the download option on my computer so I emailed the file to myself but when I open the email- it’s just a long computer code. No link and no way to “open” a file per say.

Hello Smile Always, First off, thank you for your video and taking the time to post it. I noticed in your video, when viewing your custom map in Google Earth, you are able to zoom in. However, in the video, your phone shows you are still connected via wifi. When I go offline on my phone, I am unable to zoom in. I can not even view the street names. Therefore I cannot easily navigate the map offline. Did you experience the same issue when going offline on your phone to view your personalized maps in Google Earth?

Have you tried Furkot trip planner? If you did, what is your opinion on Furkot vs Google Maps?

+Mateusz Czwakiel I played around with it for a bit after you posted this, I like Google Maps because of its simplicity and my familiarity with it, but it seems like a great tool as well.

Uploading the .kmz file to google drive and make it available offline on the Android app may make updating it a little easier. Even more so when it is shared between more travelers. Nice guide, though.

Doesn't Google Drive require being online? And what Android app are you suggesting to use?

Google drive in this case is used only to keep the file synched. To actually open it you'd still go with google earth app.

How do you get the "old" version of google earth on your iphone? or is there another app that uses KMZ files for offline use?

+Smile Always Yeah, I keep getting errors. The new version seems buggy and hasn't been updated since 2013. I'm trying an app called "Map Plus" and was able to import the KMZ file and view there. Also, there is an option after you import it to Map Plus to view in google earth (iphone) which seemed to work as well. Have you figured out a way to get all of the spots from freecampsites.net (from your other video) into a KMZ file to use offline? I've been watching all your videos and they are really practical and helpful, thanks!! For my trip I won't have every day mapped out so I have to figure out a way on the road to go into my phone and check out what roads or maybe bring some maps. Just curious, do you use any resource for cool MC roads? I've been using Butler maps online and paper and they seem pretty good.

+Adventurous Human Thanks for the kind words! I've used Map Plus myself not a bad app I havent been able to find a way to export the entirety of freecampsites.net, that's why creating this KMZ file and then exporting is a work around, its a little tedious going back and forth adding the campgrounds to your own map but I find it a great way to "scout" out the area ahead of time. like you, I don't plan out exactly where I am going to stay every night so I essentially have 10x more free campsites added to my map then I will use. My main resource for MC roads worth riding is honestly word of mouth and forum sites like advrider.com. (once you find the roads you can add them into your My Map, simply add a marker on a start and finish and add navigation directions between the two points) For example, I am thinking of stopping to Vancouver Island on my trip, I google MC roads to ride, took note of those and then emailed several people that I found on ADVrider that have free camp space and simply asked them what roads to ride and places I should see, nothing better then some Local intel :] Hope this helps let me know if you have any other questions, where are you headed this summer?
