How to Create a Consistent Writing Routine 🖋

For as long as I can remember, one of the things I’ve always loved to do the most is writing. Not only short articles or journal entries, but long novels, complex stories that transport me to a completely different place, full of interesting characters and unrealistic settings.
Actually, the first complete 500-page novel I ever wrote was completed in my first year of college (in portuguese, of course), and I still blame it as the main reason why my first and second semester GPA was way below average. I still keep that novel in a drawer as a reminder of something that I feel truly passionate about, and which I would love to return to one day.
However, since I started writing online and creating content, I was able to use my love for writing in a new, more practical way. A lot of it requires research, understanding how to shift and transform what I read into easy-to-digest, practical lessons. But at the same time, I’ve been feeling this urge to write longer, develop my ideas more and put more substance and more length to the things I like to talk about.

The best advice I ever got is to write a bad first draft. Don’t worry about the quality of your first draft. Write without editing (on paper, if you have to. This helps me), write without overthinking. Write bad sentences. Just write. A first draft always sucks, but that’s okay. At least now you have something to work with. Good luck with your book!

i dont have much problem with the first draft but 2nd drafts always get me because of the amount of editing and research i take up that slows down the process by tenfold. i guess it's more like painting or drawing in layers in the way that your process is personal. some can draw without a sketch after years of practice, others like to do the sketch and lineart, some go sketch > clean up > lineart > shadows, etc. not exactly related, just kind of rambling and trying to understand writing in a way i can digest

@@cats404 that’s okay, it takes time to create something that’s good. No rush! And yes, it’s exactly like layering.

I remember reading how German composer Ludwig Von Beethoven would take daily walks in the park near his home. While taking these walks often different music stanzas would rush into his mind. He would then go home and write these stanzas in a notebook. So when he was composing music he often had these inspirational stanzas to work with. At his death hundreds of his notebooks were found. I use this method to capture the brain triggers that can sometimes come out of nowhere. Always carry a notebook or index cards with you.

I write my very first drafts for my stories in composition books and my only goal is fill BARE MINIMUM at least one page per day 📖 I then give the books to a friend of mine - who’s faster at typing than me - so she can type them, word for word, and we can edit the TYPED drafts while keeping the original composition books untouched
