"Colors want to belong to a family. They need other colors around them to have any kind of meaning" Cute way to put it !
- light to dark - shadows: warmer color but darker in tone > same Color to shape hair bc it’s darker value than skin - establish local color (color not affected by different light source) 17:50 - for hair get value right - greyish green color because hair less warm - reddish tint for eyes and cheeks and nose and ears to bring life to skin - bring warmer Color to dark shadows on down facing plains like on the lid - darker values should be darker than light (shade it more) - bringing out green for contrast because most of the skin is already warm color - add third Color in transition area (two diff solid Color)
dude. i was looking for a shading tutorial, and i clicked this one, and i coincidentally am using the EXACT reference photo as you
Chris i'm convinced your favorite word is "nuance" 😂😂

As an artist, who’s always worked with mediums, like graphite, Pastel, or paints, I’ve been shocked by how intimidating figuring color pencil out has been! Your explanations were so helpful, and it was really entertaining watching this entire portrait take shape . Thank you so much for this ❤️. I feel like I can breathe a little easier next time I pick up my pencils 😅!
I really like the way your structure the head, and how you combine the soft and hard edges... I wish you could upload more frequently, kisses 💖💖💖

I love how you kept the reference up the whole time. It was so helpful to see the thought process
Gorgeous. I'm an absolute beginner who is 51 and never got courageous enough to start doing anything even though deep down.....I've wanted to. You've made this so easy to follow and break it down so well - I am going to try it! Thank you! I think I found a new channel to follow!
I want to thank you with allllll my heart Chris for sharing with us this entire process along with your commentary! I have been doing all I could think of to practice to improve, but I actually needed help exactly like you gave us in this video! I had been constantly checking back the past few weeks to see if you had uploaded anything new and I was starting to worry about you~ I am sooooooooo glad you are doing well and soooooooo grateful you uploaded such a helpful video! Thank you thank you thank you Chris! Hugs from Southern California ✨👍💖

P.s.s this drawing you did turned out beautiful and the colors are just so lovely and adds a sweetness and lightness that adds a new beautiful feeling compared to the original image
*Thank you, thank you, thank you, so many times over, thank you!!!* I have learned more from this tutorial than in hundreds I’ve watched in the last few months. You did an INCREDIBLE job explaining things in a reproducible manner and I simply want to say *THANK YOU * so much!!!!!!! I plan to take your course and wish you would do EXACTLY WHAT YOU HAVE DONE HERE for watercolor portraiture! I find it the most utterly confusing kind of portraiture to learn and you have a tremendous grasp of this material thus for teaching it back to newbs such as myself! Thank you so much!!!
I just clicked on the video without looking at the time I didn't even notice I'm already 40 minutes in, I'm listening to this while cutting papers for a project, I'll listen to more of this videos again❤️
I'm doing my 1st professional color pencil portrait and this one is the best tutorial I've seen. Though I go for realism in proportions i love this approach of coloring than all other videos on KZread which finish 1st eye then 2nd eye then nose and so on. So overwhelming 😬
do you have a book???? If not u really should!! Ur advice is amazing and has really helped me become confident in drawing faces 😚🥺

I was so glad to see you uploaded! !! I love your style and the way you approach your art. This piece is so pretty and your style and technique is so helpful. I would have never thought to approach a portrait this way. I love it ! Hope to see you again soon.
This was fantastic! Introducing that third color at boundaries blew me away! It such a small detail but added a cohesive feel to the whole piece!
I'M SO HAPPY YOU'RE BACK!!
I love how her hair has different colors. It makes her hair very magical❤️❤️❤️
I love you art!!!! Finally!!
I love how you work, your style and the fact that my eyes are constantly amazed/entertained while learning!
I'm fascinated on how you hold the pencil. Lately I've been looking at how other artists hold their pencils when drawing.

Huh, you'd probably be surprised by how I hold pencils, then. I've been holding my pens "wrong" ever since elementary school, my ring finger has a bump and a crook because of it, haha !

@@istoleyourjams270 Oh dang ! I've had it since elementary school though so haha.. They always tried to get me to hold pens right but I guess I am rebellious.
I absolutely love the color palette for her portrait! Beautiful!
YAY !!! You’re back 😀 and with a lovely show of unabated “ in the moment” art ! The hair ... the part you felt “lost” in ended up gorgeous just by going with your gut ... feeling free and easy in your style and colour choices is perfect. Thanks Chris .. love your vids 💕
Stunningly beautiful work, you can tell you've put the hours and years into your craft. ❤️
I’m rewatching this and I just want to say how lovely this turned out. You created such a beautiful, ethereal glow, that did not exist in the reference.
stunning, I love how you manage the color palette
I've been Inspired with Chris' artworks for a long time now... she's my biggest inspiration for me continuing semi realism with colored pencils! I love your artworks so much! I wish you inspire more people
thank you for this vid, I was craving to see you doing this kind of color pencil portraits, it always inspired me so much
Beautiful!... This is exactly what I was looking for. A colored pencil look with more of the light sketchy pencil look and feel!... Hard to find anything but the burnished photorealistic colored pencil styles (that take 40+ hrs).
Absolutely gorgeous! Thank you!
Welcome back!! Beautiful work ❤️❤️
진짜 너무 예쁘네요...
I learn so much from watching you draw/paint. I watched your Skillshare lessons too and they’re absolutely amazing and insightful. Thanks!
THANK YOU FOR THIS!
Amazing tutorials I love how you explain the mind flow while asking questions ! For beginners those questions are the key to keep moving and not struggle and tuck on what to do next
Welcome baaaack.. I've been waiting for your video since ages. Also, I'm thankful that you make another video about color pencils. I learnt and started using it bc of your videos and now it's one of my fav tools (along with watercolor)
Hi! So glad you're back on youtube ♥️ thank you so much for sharing!
I've always struggled drawing portraits and with your tutorial I was able to draw her face. Love the colors and the way you walk us through the drawing. Thank you.

even though I draw on digital, this was the best walkthough I ever seen. I learned a lot!!! It's really impressive how simple an well you explained your process, and how really useful and professional is the information you give. I really enjoy your art, thank you for making this!! ♥
Love your transition colors concept. Great!
What a charming, accomplished little piece of art. It's got depth and sensitivity. Who wouldn't want this on their wall? She's got the freshness of a Botticelli. Thanks so much for sharing your process. 👍
This is so inspiring. Thanks for sharing this!!
The way you sketch is so satisfying
so colourful but also subtle... great to see another video from you!
Этот портрет как глоток свежего воздуха среди всех этих скучных туториалов из одного бежевого цвета. От вашей работы я получила настоящее вдохновение. Спасибо вам!!!
Beautiful drawing !!!!! Thank you for the video !
Thank you for this video♥️
your artwork is inspiring and amazing. No more perfection of blending and smoothness under hyper realistic mood. 💖💖
This is amazing! Thank you very much for the advices and detailed explanations.
Excellent description of what you are doing and why you feel it is necessary! Wonderful!
you are such a good teacher and you explain things so well! thank you for this, can’t wait to check out your skillshare!
really wonderful how you took us through the process of shading. I am inspired.
Love the technique. Looks so ease, but became so beautiful and delicate. Definitely i wanna learn about
This video was super helpful. I've mostly worked with graphite, and was feeling lost trying to do a figure scene using prismacolors. I stumbled upon this video today, listening to you describe/watching you execute solutions to things I was struggling with, and felt excited afterwards to have fun and try things. My approach went from timidly trying to minimize my use of colors and rely mostly on values, to having fun mixing colors and seeing things develop better than I envisioned. Using warm colors in the shadows, colors to transition between two colors, the use of pink in certain parts of the face, etc, were all things I hadn't tried, and have been fun!
✨😩✨I love everything you posttttt
Lovely Chris. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you, just finished your SkillShare class and I am enjoying getting into drawing/painting with color pencils.
The results are awesome 😍😍😍
I really value your emphasis on setting the stage for your creativity to shine through! personally, I never set the stage for myself and rush so much and judge so early, which never even ALLOWS me to create a beautiful piece like this. but every bit of advice and coaching in this video was digestible and great food for thought. thank you.
Finally! A tutorial that I can use to fraw portraits properly, you madr it so much easier
This is by far the best step by step color pencil video i have seen thus far. You could apply these steps to any color pencil drawing where as other videos I have seen it would only apply to the reference the artist uses. Thank you so much for this video
Colorful & wonderful
Wow your portrait process is just amazing🤩
