How to create a Clipping Mask in Photoshop | Adobe Tutorial

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

[CC] Often when designing, you’ll want to superimpose an image onto a background. In Photoshop, we can do this by clipping an image onto the layer below. But what if we want the background image to define the shape and crop of the image that’s placed on top?
Our tutorial video will show you how a Clipping Mask can take a feature from your background layer to control the visibility of the layer you wish to clip on top. Once you’ve got the hang of how to use them, Clipping Masks will save you a lot of time when creating cool composite images.

    Hi, what is the difference between photo masking, clipping path, and cut out in photoshop? Can you tell me, please?

  • @solopress

    @solopress

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Annkur. 'Photo masking' is masking a photo to only show part of the image. This can be done with clipping masks and layer masks. 'Clipping path' or 'paths' are a line created using the pen tool to create bespoke shapes. Once you've created a path you can then convert it into a selection for making masks, etc. 'Cutting out' is a general term for using the above methods. For example, you could make a path around the shape of a flower, turn the path into a selection and then copy and paste the flower onto a new layer. That's one example of cutting out. Hope that helps

    That's a tricky one. Try checking the blending mode for the layer is set to 'Normal'. Also, check you haven't selected the inverse of your selection too. All too often I inadvertently change a setting without realising it. Good luck

    Solopress If the layer you are trying to turn into a clipping mask is a text layer, it won't work. You have to turn the layer into a smart layer or resterize the type first. Not ideal but that's the way round it. Hope that helps.

  • @solopress

    Have you moved the order of your layers or added a new layer between the subject layer and the clipping mask layer. That can release the clipping mask, so you just have to reapply it. The only other thing I can think of is to check the opacity setting of your clipping mask layer. See if the transparency is set to 'Normal'. Hope that helps

    i'm following your steps but my Clipping Mask button isn't working (its grey and unclickable). why is this happening?? • @solopress

    I suspect the image you dragged in has been converted to a smart layer. If you select the layer and right click, then go to 'rasterize layer'. You should be able to make the clipping mask after that. Hope that works

    Don't understand the point of clipping mask You have to separate the pixels you wanna use from the rest of the image in order to make a clipping mask So why not just delete those pixels and put the image you want to appear on the screen on a layer below that

  • @solopress

    @solopress

    Ай бұрын

    It's a valid point, and like with most of these programmes, there are more than one way to skin a cat. I prefer using masks instead of deleting because they are less permanent; you can go back and make changes and make things reappear if you change your mind, etc.
