Wow that pudding sounds delicious: chocolate pudding with lemon creme filling on a bed of pistachios? Yup! Despite the fish bladder, it still sounds amazing!

Fish swim bladder is no worse than the hooves and bones to make gelatin. And that pudding sounds amazing. I'd eat the strawberries too. This visit seems more materially difficult and socially tense. Must have been fun LMAO

It’s a shame that the original Victorian kitchens don’t exist anymore😔

You know it didn’t strike me until you said they had no refrigeration. That means almost all that prep work had to be done day of. Think how many jobs were lost just because of refrigeration. Wow. Also I heard that the Royals didn’t pay fr anything. So some families went into debt on these visits. It’s not like you can say no.

This series has been retitled and reposted like crazy. I'm always disappointed when I see a new one only to find out it's only been renamed. I think I've seen them all now. It took some doing.

I guess I'm confused as to why they were so surprised to see they used pistachios and then he was extra shocked at the liquer flavoring made from cherries. Why is this shocking?

Regarding the pistachios, I'd say they were amazed at the cash they shelled out for them! I must say, I was jealous that they could just buy two pounds in one go - I haven't bought pistachios in YEARS, and boy do I miss them😭. (I don't know why the liqueur was surprising though, I'd imagine that liqueur has been a thing since the dawn of alcohol??)

I think he was more surprised that he was able to find a record of the purchase of the ingredients. Sugar/butter/milk could have been used for anything, but he knows the pistachios and liqueur were used for that exact dish, so he could trace it from the recipe right down to the supplier. I think they are also big nerds and get overly excited by pretty much anything tangentially related to Victoria...

And where do we find the recipe? I'd love to try it myself.

Isinglass is made from the swim bladders of fish. The swim bladder gives buoyancy to the fish.

I try to dive in the pool and invariably my tuckus starts to float up. I feel like that is my swim bladder.

I love these videos! I do feel conflicted that those upstairs had zero clue what those downstairs were going through to please them. I know it was the culture. Now though. :) Love to learn more around how they moved through life, but also glad culture has evolved to not be as hard core around "classes".

Victoria did like her alcohol. She started every day with a drink. She was also known to use laudanum, opium and marijuana. She isn't known to over do it though.

And with a zillion courses, when did you ever leave the table? They said she walked around after dinner - what time would that have been? Midnight?? And all those people stood outside waiting for her until that time, haha.

To me this would be a hoighty toighty house. I'm glad I was never the super rich. My life has been very adverse at times but a very interesting life story none the less. Life strengthens you to be who you are.

Understandable to feel that way nowadays - however, in the days of royalty, it would have been an investment for your region, I think? You'd become a recognised place of influence if everyone knew that the monarch had enjoyed a stay there, and income would increase overall. So possibly not such a waste.

Rosemary is so informative but she walks like a noble British bovine.🤣🤣🤣

I'm very entertained by the way the posh accent of the narrator makes the word "Hall" sound like a woman of loose morals and ill-repute.

Lemon and chocolate? yuck. All of these Victorian dishes seem awful to me lol.

I have heard of orange and chocolate (which I don’t much care for), but I am having a hard time imagining what lemon and chocolate would be like. I can’t imagine the two going together, but I guess if one citrus goes with it, the others could as well. Maybe it’s a British thing? 🤔🤷🏻‍♂️ That fish bladder thing would be a hard pass though. Lol

I'm fairly certain that a modern head of state would expect people to take as much trouble when they visit. It is probably considerably more expensive these days as well, security and so on.
