@107309255235583630046 That's amazing, thank you!
One of the best illustrator tutorials I have ever watched- detailed enough to be easy to follow, but simple enough to not be overwhelming. I especially appreciated your foresight to potential problems, and explaining how to avoid them. Thank you, thank you! I just subscribed.
I literally spent all day trying to follow all of the other 3D text tutorials and I felt like a complete dunce and failure because the instructions were all so convoluted. I was about to call it quits when I found your video. Your five-minute instruction was so darn basic and easy to understand and follow that I found success. My logo is going to look fantastic now. Thank you!

Don't feel bad. I have been an art director for 13 years and this video just taught me how to do something I have been doing the hard way the whole time.
This was so helpful! After browsing about 20 videos on the topic, yours is the only tutorial that worked, and it worked FAST. Thank you!
loved this tutorial. quick, easy, and straight to the point. thanks! +1 thumbs up
Easily the best Illustrator tutorial I have ever seen. Learned so many other small things like Shift+Click to get RGB menu. Subscribed!
This was exactly what I was looking for, thanks! I laughed about not clicking on the image when selecting strokes/fills, I do that too and it drives me crazy!

This method should be the standard in making 3D text in Illustrator. I've made 3D text following so many different tutorials, and I think this is the easiest, most time-efficient option. Thank you for your easy-to-follow tutorial!

No problem! This way does work out pretty sweet, and it doesn't put too much strain on the file either.

thank you for this! Great interaction.. only thing is that your video screen for me wasn't clear - ie. a bit pixelated - but i know what the appearance window looks like, so was able to follow along.
Thanks man, couldn't figure it out myself
2021 and this works well. Thanks for posting!
Very helpful tutorial! Thank you. I thought maybe this method would place several copies of the "shadow" that would be visible in outline mode, but it does not. It's a great technique!

+Linda Bigbee Yeah I don't like stacking a lot of actual layers as the end result can be pretty messy (and difficult to modify afterwords). Thanks for the awesome feedback!
Finally , I found it . Thanks a lot
Thank you, Matt!
Awesome tutorial, thank you!!!

Thank you, it is super useful! And just wonder is it possible to save this style, and use it again when we need it by just one click?

dude, you just saved me. thank you so much!
Excellent - thanks!
Great tutorial man. I've learned TONS watching the vids on your channel. Question: If I add a stroke between the two fills which is the same color as the background(white in this case) and I want to lay the entire object over video and have the stroke be transparent so the 3D drop shadow appears slightly detached from the top fill, what is the best way to go about that. I've been messing around with expanding the object and the pathfinder but can't seem to nail it down. Is this as complicated as it seems? thanks again man for the clear, concise and really easy to follow tutorials.

gcinthevalley Awesome to hear! ...well, not the problems part =D Easiest way - drop it into photoshop, make the stroke a color that's very easy to select with the magic wand or color select, and then delete it. Otherwise I would do what you were talking about by expanding all the strokes and fills. After doing that I would grab just the stroke that you want to remove from the object and copy and paste in place (ctrl+f or command+f) it onto a new layer. I would then lock that layer so you don't accidentally select it for the next step. Once the stroke is on it's own locked layer, I would select everything left over and hit the "merge" option from pathfinder. Then I would unlock the stroke layer select everything and use the minus front option from the pathfinder. If that seems to fail completely, start back over with the merge everything step but this time keep the stroke on its own locked layer, but also paste the same stroke back over your object before using the merge option. This will make sure the object is complete so when you minus front it doesn't freak out. Sort of complicated....but it isn't as bad as it sounds in writing once you do if a couple times.

Matt Borchert That worked! Before your explanation, I had just about concluded that it would be easier to do what you had suggested...bring it into PS, create the simplified version with transparency and then, if necessary, run an auto-trace over it to vectorize it. I'd always prefer to keep the process purely vector so I really appreciate your explanation. I'm stoked to have found your channel man.
Hi from Australia, great tutorial Matt. That's a block shade not a drop shade btw and traditionally they are always placed on the left side of text unless its a script font if you try it I think you'll agree it just looks better balanced. As an old signwriter I find it amazing how clunky Illustrator is with it's text function and effects just have a look at how easy it is using FlexiSign or SignLab for that matter, maybe one day Adobe will wake up to this and make our lives so much easier.

another tip to knowledge.... thanks alots
May i know what is the font type you used? Its simply amazing
Thanks for this tutorial
So what is you want the extruded "shadow" in a different perspective - say lower left or upper left?
brilliant! thank you
The 3d Extrude and Bevel effect within the Effects pull down menu is a pretty quick method as well. You just apply that effect with whatever desired angle of 3d you want it to have and then expand appearance (under the object menu) and voila you have your 3d type as well. Both methods required me to go back with the direct selection tool to get the desired colors etc. that I wanted.

Yeah, but your original text or shape needs to be at an angle or you won't see the extrusion. I would love for the 3D tool to be able to apply the extrusion without having to move or rotate the original shape.
Thank you Matt!
thank you for tutorial!
Thank you very much for this trick
This rules, have been doing this in a way goofier way for way too long, haha thanks dude!!!
This tutorial doesn't appear to work in the newest AI. Can you help? When I simply select the text it doesn't show the fill color in the appearance window. I have to actually highlight the words to get the fill box to appear. BUT then I am not allowed to add a second fill. (it's grayed out) Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
