Styrofoam dummies have very sharp edges so if you want to cover it with thin fondant, it will usually tear at the edges. It's nearly impossible. The only solution would be to cover it with EXTREMELY thick fondant so that it doesn't tear. This method allows you to use a lot less fondant, plus gives you the sharp edges.

Thank you so much Marlyn! :)
Wonderful as always!
Hola Patricia! :)
Thank you so much! You can keep it forever actually. We leave ours out in the open but you can saran wrap them once they're rock hard. :)
De nada! Me da mucho gusto que te ayuden. :)
Thank you Brenda! :)
Hi! It is supposed to dry but it shouldn't "crack". It should still be easily sliced through. I suppose it just may be the brand or type of fondant. :)
Hi Laura, wonderful tutorial, how long can you keep the dummy cake and how do you store it?\
Wow your amazing!

Hey Laura. Great video as usual. How soon after we cover the dummy cake should we steam it?

Hi! You can steam at any point really. We usually steam our cakes just before presentation. :)
Laura, with the satin ice fondant, is it normal for it to dry out once it's laid out on the cake? I mean is there a way to keep it soft or is that the way it becomes. I covered a cake with fondant and when it was time to cut it, it cracks. Is that normal?
Hi Laura. Love your simple non patronising tutorials. Can I cover biscuit tins or boxes instead of dummies. Cost issues.

Wanda Emmanuel Thank you Wanda! :) To be honest, I've never tried covering biscuit tins or boxes with fondant. I'm not sure if the material they are made out of would allow the fondant to stick but it's certainly worth the try. :) God bless you! :)
Hi Laura! Can you reuse both dummie and fondant??
Hi Laura great video would u recommend this same method for tall like 8 inch dummy cakes? Thanks

Laurel Watler hi! This is red satin ice fondant. The Wilton red is just as good if not better.
I'm curious..Why do you cover the dummy cake this way? instead of the standard way?

You can reuse the styrofoam cake dummies but not the fondant. :)
When you complete any type of fondant cake how do you store it before you deliver to client? Or should I work on it the night before? I've heard horror stories of fondant cracking and cake getting ruined.. Thank you! Oh and love your videos! :)

Laura .can you please tell me if I should use pegs under dummy cake if I am adding a cake on top of dummy cake. Thank the

Hi Ann! If your dummy cake will be the cake at the very bottom then you don't need to add any support inside of the dummy cake to hold a cake tier on top because it is a very solid surface. I hope that helps. :)
Where do you get that mat!! I love it!

I bought it online. It's by Ateco. Lots of websites sell them and they come in different sizes. I LOVE IT TOO! :)
I am starting this as a hobby/side income kinda thing from home, and I dont have a steamer, is there any other way to make the fondant shiny and clean looking to where the powdered sugar doesn't show? I was thinking about spritzing it with water but that would make the color run wouldn't it? Please respond bc I am a mommy of 2 and need to know if I need to start saving for a steamer lol Love your vids!!!!

Glad you like my videos. Thanks! A steamer like the one we us is only $19 plus you can always use a coupon. Having said that, you could use a paintbrush and brush the entire cake with vodka but that can look streaky or brush shortening all over it but that gets a tad bit greasy. The steamer is your best bet.

I use shortening when I roll my fondant out and your right it makes it not stick. When I cover dummies I just use water and it sticks perfectly fine. There's a million ways to do things.
How do you store the dummy cake?
@krazykoolcakes
11 ай бұрын
I just leave it out, but make sure it's in an area that is clean, won't have any dust landing on it, and it should be in a cool and dry environment free from humidity and nowhere near direct sunlight. Hope that helps and thanks for watching. :)
Laura can you cover a chilled cake like this as well ?
@krazykoolcakes
10 жыл бұрын
HI Juli, Yes and no. :) You can definitely panel a cold cake, however you would have to leave it right side up. No picking it up and tilting it or rolling it on its side of course. I have paneled several real cakes and it works just the same. :)

It was just a thought that maybe it would be faster and easier. Thank Laura
I have always seen the side of the Fondant cut a little higher than the dummie so the Top round sets down into the fondant edge leaving no visible seam on the outside

That's definitely a different way to do it. That's what's so great about cake decorating. You can do it however you'd like. :)

Hi! I would not use a cake pan to cover it in fondant. These cake dummies are supposed to mimic a real cake. I don't think a cake pan would do that well. Thank you for watching! :)

This tutorial is to teach you how to panel dummy cakes. If it were real cake, then you'd have to panel with your cake upright. Same idea just different approach.

Hello Laura, can you share why you do this method to cover dummy rather using one piece of fondant draped over? Just like we would covering a cake with fondant. Thanks bunches
