Lately in MWII, I've been seeing more and more Cluster Mines used and since the counterplay for them isn't clear, I wanted to dive deep into their behaviors as well as methods to counter them. What are your thoughts on the current state of Cluster Mines in Modern Warfare II?

Claymores have exploded instantly in recent games, and the counter perk doesn't even delay them. You used to be able to dodge them with a little skill

I’m so glad to see this comment, I though I was going crazy the other day when a Bouncing Betty blew up instantly when I dove beside it. The next play I walked past a Claymore, killed an enemy, backed up and got blown to smithereens. Immediate rage quit.

@@bobfranklin2572 that's what I mean. I personally think that cold blooded should be a general immunity perk (nerfs thermals, non targeting from kill streaks. I guess it could fit with cold blooded, ghost, or spotter), but claymore/bb delays should be in the game in some fashion
I used to run Counter UAV as my 2nd streak but, the Cluster Mine is so much more useful. Cluster Mine can completely block off choke points or popular flank routes. I play Hardpoint a lot in this CoD. It's so good in that game mode.

CUAV has always been a meme killstreak, takes literally 5 bullets to be shot down, if you hate being on the map run ghost. I never run concealment perks or killstreaks, shits a waste. If you're doing good, they won't get uavs, if you're doing bad, ghost won't save you and you won't get CUAVs. Welcome to the SBMM meta.
Something to investigate: I've had a few times where I throw a cluster mine and an already placed trophy will destroy the base (and all additional mines) in one shot.

Makes sense. The base lands and then it releases the other mines. But if it's destroyed mid-air, no extra mines.
I can't believe cluster mines don't require more kills/score. They're so good.

They are very good, but I've had them kill no one before. In fact, they kill me all the time when they explode after their timer ends. I won't even be camping that spot. I'll just be passing through and boom. Still better than a counter uav that gets shot down immediately. Unless my whole team is running them and we're farming score for AUAV

It’s good for two guaranteed kills which is god tier for a mode like grind
Spotter and Tracker could definitely use some buffs. Like the Engineer perk of other CODs where you could clearly see items through walls. I miss the old IMS killstreaks of the older CODs. Now there was a place and forget streak that worked!

Cluster mine is ten times better than the IMS. IMS was larger (large enough to be seen from the moon) it could be baited by smart players, it had counters in the form of EMP and stalker and it was competing with much stronger killstreaks. The cluster mine has no hard counters as Ace told us, it's small, barely visible in all the mess you have to deal with, counter perks are horrible or non existent and it's projectiles don't self-destruct if you destroy the hive.

if you die to these it takes 2 to kill. so stop pressing w key and back up
Trophy wasn't able to target clusters for a while on release, they only recently started countering them. Most OBJ based teams run trophy systems with their clusters on their defense sites. The only counter is DDOS + Explosive Grenades.

Which means you have to kill the trophy system which isn’t that hard. But you have to kill it first before throwing anything to destroy them.

I've known for a while now that hitting one won't kill me, but thus far that knowledge has not stopped me from running straight into two of them.
It’s sad when the cluster mine is the best streak in the game 😂

I remember when the game first came out people were calling this kill streak the most useless one 😂 shit was underrated for a cool minute
I always like to use the Turret, it takes a solid 18-20 melee hits to knock it out, or 2-3 magazines. If anything is overpowered its the Turret.

Only problem with the turret is that you have put yourself in harms way with no gun for a couple seconds to place it effectively, I die before I can place it very often. If it was faster to place down I would use it

Great breakdown! The thing that's bothering me the most is the amount of bullets you need to take down the cluster mine. By the time you're finished, the enemy will already know you're near. Due to the increasing amount of claymores, proximity and cluster mines, I've been using spotter lately, which definitely helps. It could use the buff you're talking about though.
we primarily play single life modes (Cyber attack/prisoner) and an oddity with the cluster mine here is they will explode upon a friendly revive... very often killing you

Good and helpful info! I'd just note that placing them in open areas is more effective in Hardcore mode, where the submunitions will easily dispatch a player, even at full health. Personally, I use Spotter a lot, it's great for sussing out sniper hides. The range on it has always seemed fine - I routinely see prox mines in the electronics shop on Taraq from across the map, and the hacking ability is pretty underrated. I do wish the ability to mark items for your teammates hada bit more range though.
Any time I play domination, I have cluster mines. They act as a better teammate holding B than the randoms I always get when playing solo.

I love using the cluster mines. Great at holding a area as defense. also using it as offensive weapon by throwing it around a corner into a room that enemies are holding. I’ve gotten so many kills that way. Plus it clears a room for my team.
I’ve felt like battle hardened / bomb squad have been super inconsistent lately. Half the time it seems like the effects of explosives (and especially gas grenades) have been stronger than normal even with the perk equipped
For objective game modes the lower tier killstreaks are more useful since they can be activated more often
Curious if shock sticks have any effect. I keep meaning to try it out, but always forget.

I love the spotter perk when playing a group of campers. I think it is pretty easy to see the equipment, you get a good idea of where they are camping, and you can hack their mines.
The perfect counter to cluster mines is a Riot Shield paired with the Bomb Squad perk. Just crouch walk into the cluster bombs and make sure the shield is pointed toward them. You can clear out most of them with little or no damage, even when they're bunched up. I think the cluster mine is great, but it should probably be a higher kill streak. In objective, you can get these fairly easily.
Spotter does not look like that for me at all; the outlines are thick and prevalent for me. I'm on a 1080p monitor on PC.

I think Molotov burn damage should destroy them and EOD should reduce the damage of each mine to where it takes three to kill a player. Spotter definitely needs a buff overall. I don't find the mines to be OP though. There are enough cues to know that they're active and local. I just think the things i mentioned should be done for the sake of consistency in the game
If anything it gave us a great way to balance normal Claymores and other such items. Make a beeping noise within 10-15m so that way abusing or exploiting these items isn't an issue and only punishes people who overreach. This would even help with C4 on the objective not being a free double or triple kill defend.
This is the only lethal streak that reliably gets kills everytime it’s used.
Ace, you should make a video comparing the execution timings to kill, as well as animation length, like how you did for MW2019. I've been waiting for a follow-up for about 3 years now, and i'm hoping you'd get around to this sometime when you have free-time!
I like the cluster mine especially for objective modes. I have tried crawling into an objective with success with cluster mines present. I would try using a shield.
Note: A cluster mine doesn't fully deploy unless it hits the ground before you die. If it's in the air and you get shot - it'll be back in your inventory when you spawn. Basically it takes kinda long to throw a cluster mine down. I often die trying. Not sure if Fast Hands applies here. I wish it was faster overall or at least was deployed the moment it left your hands.

Fast hands helps with initially equipping it if I recall, but actually throwing it out doesn't affect it.
I've run the clustermine since day 1; on shipment you put it in the middle of the map in the intersection, good for 3-5 kills usually
TL;DR - Agreed with the conclusions drawn here! Being a slower, methodical type of player seems to make these even less of a concern when combined with Spotter and other things, but that's no reason not to buff the weak spots on Tracker, Spotter - and other perks as well. Bring back SitRep! Tactical / Slower player here. I have also noticed the increase in cluster mine usage lately and, honestly, it's not been as big of an issue for me. Granted, I tend to frequently stop and listen to my surroundings for a second or three, picking up on footsteps, gunfire, and often, the Cluster Base's beeping noise, which usually tells me that where I'm going contains a high explosive mousetrap. I also run Tactical Cameras + Overcharge on my main loadout, so if I really feel the need to check an area for mines or other traps, I'll usually have one ready to toss into a room or hallway and do a quick scan of whatever is around. I've removed a fair few campers doing this, too. As for Spotter, I run that as well, but I use it more for finding those annoyingly small CUAVs or avoiding things like a Wheelson. It's also helped me break some defended spots by hacking Claymores or Proxmines and then blowing up their prior owner, which I find to be hilarious. I find spotter works very well with how I play because of how I stop to assess my situation a lot and that gives me plenty of time to notice the outlines of explosives and other things that may be about. When I do have to play aggressive, I definitely feel like it's harder to see them, as they get lost in all of the information I'm trying to process compared to walking around and absolutely if I stop moving entirely. Now, all that said... Yeah, I agree that more counters for Cluster Mines and other things would be nice, and definitely would love to have spotter get a buff. I miss the days of SitRep's bright glow and mine-delaying shenanigans.
It's intriguing because in previous CoDs there was counterplay to deployable explosives like claymores and bouncing betties, but in this game, aside from proning to the mines or blowing up cluster mines with a grenade, you can't do anything about them. 100% agree that spotter and tracker need a buff
What I miss is being able to hack into other peoples killstreaks, and make them my own. I remember in black ops 4 when I used Zero to be able to hack into equipment and make it my own. I think it would be great if you could use the spotter perk to do the same thing on kill streaks, such as sentry guns, uav’s and cluster moms. Or create a separate perk but have the same timing effort for the hacks as in BO4. Make it where certain items take longer to hack into. Or like in BO2 where you had the black hat and you could hack into certain things it would be a great way to counter cluster mines.
Do the mines do the same damage over the whole 5 metre radius or is it stronger the closer you are to the mine
I think cluster mines themselves are generally, but I think both of your counter play suggestions are good. I'd add that they should probably have a little less health. At least they should be able to destroy each other. It just makes logical sense for that chain reaction to happen. You could manually set it off if the mines are in a closed area. If you're using them and place them in a closed area, then you know you'll get the full explosion if someone sets them off.
I have used UAV, Cluster, and Sentry Turret for a while. Best setup ever.
A well-placed shock stick can detonate quite a handful of the mines. I'm pretty sure if they are stacked together, you can wipe them out with a single shock stick.
This video perfectly outlines my issue with cluster mines: They don't have any hard counters, and they're a low-end killstreak so you can get them constantly in a match with very little effort. One cluster mine isn't terrible to deal with, but when multiple people on the enemy team are running it on a game mode like Domination or Hard Point and slapping it on top of every point, it puts the match so far in their favor it's not even funny. Honestly I think the individual mine HP needs to be reduced. They're super tiny and take 2-3 bullets each to kill So if you take the time to try and kill them, instead of dying to a mine, you'll just get shot by an enemy. The best strategy to deal with them from an "I want to win the match" perspective is to kill a couple of the mines and then just commit suicide by running into the remainder so that the point is able to be captured again, but when the best strategy against something is "intentionally die to it so you don't have to deal with it for a little while" there may be a problem. Granted they're not completely overpowered, just overtuned a little. I think maybe if they were just moved up one tier (6 kills instead of 5) they would be fine. That would make them feel less spamable when multiple enemies are running them, and I would bet they have similar kill rates to the other streaks in that tier.

I think being able to see and destroy the center unit should also detonate the satellite units. Or a DDOS, if it can see all 5 mines should also detonate or perma-disable the whole thing.
Did you try with the extra tactical dual shock sticks?

Another thing I want to add is that you can't have 2 of your own cluster mines out on the field at once, I tried to add another cluster mine and I noticed that it destroys the first batch with no explosion
When I play search it’s always a debate between counter uav and cluster mines. I tend to go with counter UAV and I save it when the enemy calls in a UAV. Cluster mines take a bit too long to pull out and can get you killed. However they are hard to shoot when you have seconds to defuse the bomb. It’s almost a guarantee kill
I been noticing latethat bomb squad doesnt protect me from rpgs that does not land directly on me like the JOKR for example

Wait - is it possible to have DDOS equipped to your Field Upgrade Pro and you get the "Devices in Range" visual for free without even needing to use it? So I can have it equipped alongside my regular field upgrade and I can now detect claymores, etc. with no downside? That sounds super useful especially for SnD-like game modes
Does a stun/flash disable the mines, like they do with claymores?

DDOS doesn’t always work against cluster mines. I tried using this quite a bit and I’d give it a 50/50 shot of it working or not. This is on Xbox so I don’t know if it’s different on PC or PS
The only people I run into using Tracker usually have some very sus killcams where they track you thru a wall or do a 180 flick to lock onto you. They use Tracker to disguise the fact that they have extra information in the game.
Well ifvi can go without being flashed or stunned or shot or knifed or spawned killed long enough then i might hear the beeps if i dont have teammates shooting or blocking me on shipment
I don't know If it was a glitch or has been patched but I threw a shock charge and it removed all near clusters

Unless you run bomb squad, battle hardened and trophy system constantly, you will constantly be spammed by cluster mines, flashbangs, stuns, and throwable explosives. That's the downside of this class system - everybody gets a tactical, an explosive without sacrificing attachments/secondary weapon slot, etc.

I have tried to deploy cluster mines in trophy placed areas. And the trophy just eats the whole mine with base station before it hits the ground.
You missed the shock stick Ace. As long as the shock stick is in range, it'll detonate the cluster, and every other similar items. The shock stick according to the description is actually for detonating explosives remotely.
That's an idea for a perk rework, Bomb Squad / EOD rather then reducing loadout explosive weapons (atleast if hit within a meter it should still reduce splash damage) reduces lower tier Score / Kill streak explosive damage, that way a chopper gunners rocket will still end your existence, and a 40mm hitting you head on will still kill you, but, clustermines won't as easily. and RPG-7 spammers have to actually take a micro second to aim rather then firing a mini nuke and killing everyone within five feet of the blast. I say this as someone who's hated explosive damage from mines and who is very salty a 40mm can hit someone in the upper chest, and detonate but not kill them.
Is it me or a few updates before you could destroy all mines by shooting the base station ?
I legit didnt even think they could be destroyed by shooting. I have tried shooting them several times but would get no hit markers. I now assume you have to shoot the base first then the mines are shootable?
It makes noise, glows, and can be countered pretty easily. It gets probably 1 kill on average. I'd say it's fine. A buff to spotter would be welcomed, but I see tracker being used all the time (I play ground war) so I don't think it needs a buff when there are a lot of other weaker perks that need buffed.

Clusters are amazing imo. They're my go to + bouncing betties in Cyber Attack, putting them down either near objective, or on cut through lanes
I pretty much play hardcore exclusively (I’ll play other modes with friends) and cluster mines are both amazing and terrifying, I also totally agree that spotter needs an upgrade.

To me the purpose of a cluster mine is to block or lock down a lane for a short time, which I think it's effective at doing. I don't like "passive" streaks so I personally don't use it, but I don't think a nerf or buff is needed. My counter is out waiting the mine, and I don't think the user keeps track of the clock on them and it acts like a false security blanket for the user. So when it expires, that lane becomes a good flank afterwards.

As a ground war player who runs around destroying vehicles 2 shock sticks and 2 thermite sticks hard counter these things pretty hard.

I feel the real utility is in using the mine as an early warning system that triggers multiple times and persists through death, as well as a deterrent to discourage or make campers think twice about setting up in a power spot. Any kills it gets are just the cherry on top.

Oh I didn't realize it spread mines out. I assumed it was like the IMS from mw3 and mines shot out from the middle. I do think it's a bit to good for how low it is to earn. Usually a guaranteed kill or 2 from it with not enough counter ability.

I’m not sure if I agree with the line of sight thing because I’ve been killed by a cluster mine when it was placed inside a room and I was outside the room. Although in proximity to trigger it but in no way was there any line of sight. It’s just that these things are so inconsistent. I’ve had claymores go off in enemy faces and do nothing - not even damage them. I’ve had flashes and stuns go off in front of enemies and then I pushed assuming they were blinded or stunned but nothing again and in the killcam it’s like nothing happened. Everything is just so inconsistent.
I use spotter b/c you got teams/squads that when losing they start camping with claymores and mines! Spotter is useful
I think destroying the base mine should weaken the smaller mines, maybe reduce their health or add some trigger delay. It makes no sense that if i notice and destroy the base mine i ended up giving it a buff by making small mines even more difficult to detect and avoid
I think spotter should be more visable through walls and make this the perk that alsp has the trigger explosive delay. It works hand in hand then. This would allow you to comfortablely go around to where you see an explosive the hack it while standing on it
I regularly get hit markers with cluster mines but proximity mines kill me even with the anti explosion perk
Cluster mines, snapshot grenades, and drill charges are my least liked things added to cod in recent years. Dead silence is nice, but I use DDOS more than anything to counter explosive crap around every corner. Cold blooded and ghost are go-to’s for me so sometimes I even run stim +bomb squad + battle hardened just to handle claymores, Betty’s, cluster mines, and drill charges lol

The shock stick is also a good counter as well since it can destroy the mine. (I already tested.)
Buff the spotter perk and make it like the engineer perk in previous games where you delay the explosion by just a few seconds
The trophy system from my experience is ghe only counter to it. I tried to throw this on enemy trophy system a d it got completely destroyed. I'm not sure if you throw your trophy system on an already placed cluster mine is it will counter the explosions like it does for other lethals

Use shocksticks to trigger the mines,thermite as well. But the best way is holding a shield and push over all of them.
I use these, and sentry’s, especially on dom, set your sentry up, then your cluster mine at its base they can’t get to the sentry to kill it

They are good on domination to hold objectives all my killstreaks are area denial. Cluster mine, mortar strike then V-Tol jet. Best killstreaks for domination which is what I play the most

I thought decoy grenades triggered them if they bounce onto the cluster mines
