There is another tutorial in youtube where you use "displace" in 3ds max to obtain the shape of a logo its very accurate, but your option is way better and faster!!

I think he meant to press alt+left mouse click to unselct some portions. You can also press shift + left mouse click to add selections to the total.

Hard to follow for beginner. Many steps are done too fast. Ok to slow down and make video longer. Viewer can skip the part they know.
