How To Convert Food Waste Into FREE Cooking Fuel

One of our favorite systems here at Acorn Land Labs in the HomeBioGas methane digester System. HomeBioGas is a company based in Israel that focuses on creating systems that convert food waste into free energy (methane fuel) and liquid fertilizer. We feed our HomeBioGas system 1-2 buckets of food scraps every few days.
Acorn Off-Grid Course (use code: Acorn50): acornlandlabs.com/pages/the-o...
Would you like to build freedom and take control of your time through simple, affordable off-grid living systems & methods? We show you how with the Acorn Home concept. It's not for everyone. But freedom still exists for those who are willing to build new skills, use innovative systems and live differently.
This gives us up to 2 hours of clean burning methane fuel for our grill-top burner on the back deck. We could run this burner indoors if we drilled a gas line hole in the wall. We also get a few gallons of nutrient rich liquid fertilizer every few days. We use the liquid fertilizer to grow more produce in our gardens. This system pays for itself in a few years by eliminating our need to purchase propane and by providing us with free fertilizer for the garden.
The HomeBioGas system even has an optional flush toilet. This methane digester is able to process human waste in an off-grid setting. In this case, you would direct the liquids into a wood chip leach field (similar to a septic tank). You should not directly use human waste to fertilize produce for safety reasons.
You can however plant fruit trees, bamboo, comfrey, or berry bushes over the drain field. Anything with woody stems higher off the ground will prevent pathogen contamination from the ground (unlike leafy greens or veggie close to the ground).
We plant to test out the HomeBioGas toilet in our Fall 2023 MicroCabin build.
HomeBioGas makes bigger systems for larger families as well. They even make commercial sized methane digesters for restaurants and hotels.
System Name: HomeBioGas Methane Digester
System Inputs: Water, Cow Manure (for setup), Food Waste, Livestock Manure (optional)
System Outputs: 2 hours daily methane cooking fuel, 1-2 Gallons of liquid fertilizer

This might seem a bit odd, but i wish they made one that would just take like 0,5 gallon of waste a day, i could fit it on my boat and have a small fertilized garden in my cabin, as well as get a bit of cooking gas every day.

That’s a good idea, but not as possible due to liquid in the setup. W anaerobic setups, to fully compost the material until it breaks down you will need access to soil at the end to bury/mix it in. Having stinky water sloshing may work if it’s next to your grey water setup, but still sounds not so feasible as having a bit of soil and doing aerobic composting. There’s also not really a shortcut in composting unless you’re ready to introduce heat; so it’s going to take a lot of time just sitting on your boat. The isolation component is the hardest- having a compost system on open water gets into logistics of where you can put the compost after it’s done, well, composting. Plus, a garden on open water sounds nice in theory, but can get bad quick when going through storms. Hydroponics could be an option, but the pumps in that and the fertilizer equipment to get started is a high entry cost. It does take away the need to thoroughly wash your vegetables as it isolated then from soil bacteria… but really all fresh water and energy on boats are sort of limited.

I have questions. 1 Some food waste will not be broken down due to the hard fiber some foods have so what will happen you have to clean it every often? Since try putting water and poop in a bucket and then throw food scrap and see what happens after a few months which you will see the tough fibers around. 2 what happens when someone does not want to cook for the day or week then what can someone do with the extra gas? Since its not allowed to sell gas concentrators for future use since some feel it is a bit tough to handle. 3 the material is made out of what since if plastic how long can that handle the UV rays 5-10 years and then you got a mess? 4 I assume it smells being next to it a bit more than being further away. 5 cant one do the same with a big barrel or container and add a tough airtight bag at the top. what type of bag is the issue.

  • @LandLabs

    1. We might need to clean out in a few years, but even bones eventually dissolve in this unit. 2. There’s a pressure release valve to release extra gas. B-energy biogas from Germany actually does have storage bags that are detachable 3. We will see! Systems have been going strong for almost 2 years now, no UV damage at all - keeping them in a greenhouse extends life too 4. Smell is earth within 3-4 ft, really not bad at all 5. You can absolutely DIY this. Search “Solar cities IBC biogas tank” You can use IBC tanks

Yes, absolutely. Food uses nutrients to grow, this biogas system captures that nutrients and puts it back in the soil or a garden (instead of being trapped in a landfill with toxins). PLUS you get the free cooking fuel of methane. Methane is 20x more potent than CO2 as a greenhouse gas. Burning it as fuel converts it to CO2, and you avoid paying for propane 💯

  • @acornlandlabs

You'd want to fertilize berry bushes, fruit trees and woody stemmed plants by running the liquids pipe underground into a woodchip bed, a leach field. You could also use comfrey and other plants that are used for composting. Use the human waste to fertilize comfrey, and then compost that comfrey. That acts as a biological filter. You want to avoid the liquid waste splashing on or near leafy greens (otherwise you could have pathogen contamination).

@@oscarjohansson79so there's a few things. Much of what lives in your gut biome isn't stuff you want in your upper GI tract, and rinsing with water isn't enough to clean it off fresh veggies and fruit. This is regardless of your diet. Further, unless you're completely self-sustaining, your food likely contains traces of chemicals or medicine given to the source of that food - be it animal or vegetable, and even if labeled as organic. Further, there are some really nasty diseases called prion diseases that attack your brain tissue and can be spread via fecal matter - and often aren't digested in the methane digester or even high temperature composting piles. You need ultra-high-temperature composting to occur for eradication of those diseases, and you'd need an industrial composter to hit those temperatures long enough to be effective.

  • @acornlandlabs

    @acornlandlabs

    10 ай бұрын

Yes; the methane in the video is being burned to cook on. We are aware it's flammable :D Great question though about pressure release valve -- yes, the system does have a pressure release valve if the methane is not being burned off regularly. This methane is barely pressurized, it's not an explosion hazard. It could certainly catch fire, but this system is not like a gas tank or propane tank.

Just curious, do you think you could take one of those methane digesters, and put it inside a greenhouse, and have the methane producing a flame round the clock to keep the temperature in the greenhouse above freezing for the winter, in order to provide some protection for plants that are not hardy enough to survive freezing roots? And would the exhaust from the flame be beneficial to the plants? I've never taken any chemistry classes, so I don't quite understand how the reaction and byproducts of burning methane work.
