How to Convert Dodge Dakota & Durango 4 speed to 5 speed Transmission (45RFE to 545RFE)

This is the easiest transmission conversion you will ever do in 30 minutes convert your 4.7L
4-speed automatic transmission into a 5-speed for under $50.00
I went from 15.8-16.2 to 17.3-18.5 MPG after making this upgrade. That is around 2 MPG better than before. The truck has 3.92 rear-end gears.
This will work for 99-02 Dodge Dakota, Durango, Ram, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Liberty
This is a great video on how to replace the Transmission Control Module TCM/TCU.
Here is part number 56044574AC for the 545RFE TCM
To determine what transmission you have now, enter the VIN number in the link provided below.

Great job Martin! my 02/03 deserves better and even if it should pull harder from 1st to 2nd gear, I'm liking it! No, I'm loving the whole idea because my Grand Cherokee was a Sept 2002 and to be quite honest, it just doesn't seem to shift like a 5 speed and I know how bad that sounds but hell's bell's, I want a Grand Cherokee that breathes fire and moves out smartly just like it has a hemi or an interceptor motor even if it has a 4.7 H.O. under the hood! It currently has 177K plus and i was going to have a fluid and filter(s) change and I was going to a trans specialist that's been in the biz since 1970 and ask him if the fluid pressure could be bumped up a bit just so that i don't have that slush bucket shift a going on! That type of shift started in about 400 miles ago and the the trans doesn't act like it has been abused but the trans filter does seem like it might seem a bit restricted although the fluid color is within reasonably good condition. Thank-You for that hot tip and regard all you video's to be valuable, through and through!!

Did this 2 years ago and it's good for keeping the engine at a lower Rpm at higher highway speeds (80+ mph). Only thing I've found is it almost eliminated 4th gear, in 5th it would almost always prefer to downshift to 3rd then back up to 4th for a second and then to 5th again to stay. I know 4th and 5th ratio are very close to each other but I definitely feel Chrysler could have programmed the TCM to utilize 4th a little better. It's funny though that the government mileage ratings for 01-02 are the same as 03-04.

I just took the truck to Arizona and back, with some hilling driving. The truck would shift into 4th most of the time on the hills which brought the RPM up 600 from 2000 at 70 MPH and only downshifted once into 3rd and that brought the RPM to 3300 to 3500 at 70 MPH. I have no completes, I love it.

The TCM stores the band adjustments and certain pressures from the old transmission. Can’t be cleared except with DRB3. Also, it’s technically unlocking 6th gear. On upshifts, the 545 (they’re all a 545RFE) is programmed to skip 3rd. So 1, 2, 4, 5 on the old programming. And then 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 on the new programming. 3rd is only used on a downshift from any of the gears higher than it. Also also, the trans may shift extremely hard from 1st to 2nd when doing this swap and will return to normal when the original TCM to that trans is reinstalled. It won’t relearn to soften the shift. Another also, removing torque management will cause zero harm no matter what no matter what. A firm(er) shift in an auto reduces heat, slip and wear and will increase life.

The transmission is a 545RFE. It sounds like there could be a problem with the blend doors on your HVAC that could be a concern if you can't get to the blend door motor. Sometimes, the dash needs to be removed to replace that. If the body is rust free, I don't think I would give more than 35 for it

If you do get a CAI can I recommend Injen brand?? I must pre state you will have to relocate your cruise control servo motor as I did. Well worth it, and you may choose to do the TCM too just for space. Stuff you seem to like to do. All the other CAI’s I could find do not come all the way to the front right of the engine bay, they stop short of an extra bend right in front of the ECM and sit over the exhaust manifold, a lot of them do have boxes. The Injen brand one does come all the way to the front corner but does not come with its own box and a deflector shield instead that l did not use. I opted to make a box that pulls from a hole in the fender that’s already there. I should make a video about it, I think it came out well for homemade box.

Hey Martin. Just subscribed to your channel. I myself own a 04 dodge Dakota. Bought her brand new with 4 miles on her. I've done all the maintenance and repairs on her except the fuel pump which thank god it was under warranty and I just had my transmission rebuilt @ 250k miles. The hardest repair I've ever done on any vehicle I've ever owned is replacing the oil pan gasket on my Dakota! Two days! I think it would have been easier to pull the motor than the route I took. Do you know of a way to over ride the cut off on my factory driving lights when switching on the high beams? Thanks.

Thank you for subscribing. Yeah, changing out an oil Pan gasket on a Durango or Dakota is quite hard because of the 3rd member is in the way much easier on a WJ Jeep Grand Cherokee. My particular Dakota does not have the driving lights but I am going to replace the front bumper and adding the driving lights I'll have to look into that I personally wasn't aware that the driving lights come on with the high beams.

With the price of gas today and you're looking at looking at 1 to 1.5 miles per gallon better, I would say a $40 investment is quite worth it. When it goes into 5th gear it is actually lowering your RPM from the 4th gear that you had before.

I've read on some forums that it's a decent mod if you have the 3.92 gears but I've heard not to do it if you have 3.55 like my 2002 Durango, grain of salt and all that, what is your take? Have you heard of this being an issue?

  • @martinbuilt

    @martinbuilt

    2 жыл бұрын

That's one of the things I can't stand about forums there's always someone bitching about some mod. You'll hear complaints about oh now my transmission is hunting for a gear well it's probably shifting more than it did before but of course it is you've just gained another gear so it's trying to keep it in the optimum torque range. So if you went to a 8 or 9 speed transmission how many times do you think it's going to shift then. And for a mod that cost less than $50 more like under 40 I think it's worth finding out if you like it or not. So later when Durango and Dakota went to the 545 are those people complaining that they have a 5 speed transmission and that it's hunting for a gear and wish they had the 45 instead I doubt it. Well that's my take on it.

Did this awhile ago in my 2000 WJ and I didn't gain any mpg. Instead I got a stupid downshift spot just under 50mph that annoys me like crazy. Will probably put my factory computer back in. I've had the biggest mpg gain from running 93+ octane for over a year now. Most my driving is around 60mph and I get around 25mpg on average, tanks to around 20 once the bit of city is added in. 2000 WJ V8 with Selec-trac that's always run in AWD mode. This swap is pretty crazy though, so is the tranny itself though. Think I read it could be programed to have 8 forward gears and 3 reverse...
