i drew 4 years for college entrance and this blew my mind. the goal of redering thing was to match exact value to the reference and i didn' like doing that and i got to know why now. that wasn't design at all. there were no decision making in that. after understanding this core intention behind these rendering design, i enjoy looking at and making art more.

thanks, I have been wanting to work on improving my value definitions. my linework is OK but separating values is hard (often muddy in execution). the concepts about having consistency of tone/value (and having a gradient along a particular value definition) were very informative.

the model here is a good one, although I,d say (knowing a bit about Body building) that he is disproportionate, which seems obvious. His arms & lower leg/calves arent as developed as his broad thick chest, so...on the subject of changing/enhancing things, I would try to correct this as well as change lighting, generally it's best to stick with the...laws of lighting the chest is the centre of the body where the eye is first drawn, & so it looks best with the most highlights as you see it already, especially under this CARRAVAGIO type lighting it looks so dramatic that it doesnt require much change, if anything the image needs to be simplified, it would be very easy to over do it. you offer some good tips about values, a LOT goes on within shadows themselves doesnt it there can be variations of darkness & sometimes muted colours can be seen in them, as the ground plane reflects things back
