    That is a fab tutorial! Clear explanations and the right level of details. I love RME gear but whenever I watch one of their tutorials I am confused. Perhaps cause they are doing tutorials for engineers, not for musicians or hifi aficionados 😂 Liked and subbed.

    Thanks, glad you found it useful. It's true the RME range is traditionally aimed at professional engineers, and as such there's often a certain level of knowledge that's expected. We like to try and break things down as much as we can though - everyone has to start somewhere!

    Hi Alex! The ADI-2 Pro FS R can work as a class-compliant 2-channel interface, and you'd obviously get the incredible quality of the unit, but yes it may be a bit overkill! As the ADI-2 Pro FS R works as a class-compliant interface, you don't get the benefit of Totalmix FX like you have with your 800. If you want a simple 2-channel recording device, I'd suggest the Babyface Pro FS or if you're looking for more features, the new Fireface UCX II is also a fantastic option!

    @Kostya K. Hi and yes, the ADI-2 Pro FS R has 2 x line-level inputs. Since the purpose of a microphone preamp is to boost the signal up to line-level, you can connect any external preamp to the Pro's inputs for recording (most likely with female XLR to TRS cables).

    Hi Synthax Audio, thanks for the video. Im still getting my head around the functionality and benefits of using the ADI-2 Pro FS R or ADI-2 DAC or ADI-2 FS in combination with an audio interface (in my case the UCX 2). Im reading through the comments here, but one area is still not clear and am wondering if you clarify for me? Will the audio being recorded to the DAW be of higher quality if routed through the ADI-2 Pro or ADI-2 DAC FS or ADI-2 FS compared to the quality of my UCX 2? I understand the difference would be marginal but i am trying to better understand if there is an analogue to digital output after DA conversion. I would think this would be the case because of the marginally better converters in the ADI-2 Pro compared to the UCX 2 but i am uncertain about this because all i am seeing and hearing are comments that the reference for monitoring with headphones or monitors will be higher quality. Am i missing something? Do all of these 3 units convert back to digital as an available output which can be routed into what is recorded into the DAW? Also, I am trying to figure out which unit of the ADI-2 series will be best for my needs. Can i utilise the main headphone outputs on the ADI-2 as a second and 3rd live monitoring headphone mixes using routing? (While I am at the same time using a live monitoring headphone mix on the UCX-2?) Do any or all of the ADI-2 units offer this functionality? Thanks

    Hi and thanks for commenting, hopefully the following helps clarify things a bit; 1 - Will the audio being recorded to the DAW be of higher quality if routed through the ADI-2 Pro - Analogue audio sources recorded via the ADI-2 FS or Pro FS R's inputs will in theory be higher quality than the same source recorded through the UCX II, as the ADI-2 Series have slightly better A-D (and D-A) conversion. As you state the difference will be subtle though, as the UCX II already has very high quality inputs. Recording with the ADI-2 Series is really meant for a few specialist cases (namely mastering) - for the vast majority of studio recording applications, the UCX II is more than capable! Also if you're asking whether it's worth routing audio out of a DAW, then recording it back in via the ADI-2 FS or Pro's analogue inputs, purely to achieve a 'higher quality' signal, then no probably not. It's not a 'mojo box', and is designed to be transparent - you'd be better off looking at dedicated hardware or FX units that are designed to process audio (EQs / compressors / summing mixers etc). 2 - Do all of these 3 units convert back to digital as an available output which can be routed into what is recorded into the DAW? - Only the ADI-2 FS and ADI-2 Pro FS R have digital outputs. The DAC is essentially a D-A Converter only, i.e. it's designed for listening / playback only. It therefore has digital inputs, but not digital outputs (although it can pass audio from the SPDIF input to the USB connection). 3 - Can i utilise the main headphone outputs on the ADI-2 as a second and 3rd live monitoring headphone mixes using routing? - Yes, you can send audio from the UCX II to an ADI-2, then monitor via its headphone outputs. This can be the same as what you're monitoring via your UCX II, or something different... depends what submix you send to the ADI-2 (from TotalMix). Both headphone outputs on the ADI-2 DAC or Pro will play back the same audio however, as all of the outputs share the same audio source.

    Great review, thanks Milton. I have an Apollo Twin X that does not have an optical out. I just got the ADI-2 Pro FS R. 1. I'm wondering if I am out of luck connecting it to run my recordings (mic/guitar) through the Apollo into the RME ADI-2 Pro? 2. If so, if it will work if I leverage the Apollo Twin X as my input source on my DAW, and then RME ADI-2 as the output. (will there be much latency this way?). 3. I see Apollo has Line Outs - can those somehow be leveraged for connection into the analog ins of the RME ADI 2? Would appreciate any recommendations.

    The ADI-2 Pro FS R has a USB connection, so I presume you would just use the Apollo as your input (AD) and the RME and your output (DA) while both are plugged in via USB. You can easily set this up in the Sound Preferences in macOS. If you're on Windows, then I don't know how that would work.

    Glad you found the video useful! We're using the ADI-2 Pro as the clock source in this tutorial as its built-in SteadyClock FS is superior to the clock in the original Babyface Pro and other earlier interfaces. If it was a Babyface Pro FS, then there would be no real difference in terms of clock source, as they both feature FS clocking. Hope this helps!

    Hi there! That would be the correct chain, though you may find a bit of latency when recording this way - the ADI-2 Pro FS R isn't really designed as an audio interface, though of course it can be used as a class compliant interface. There's definitely a difference in sound quality between the two units, but the ADI-2 is of course offering reference-class conversion, so that should be expected. For recording, I'd always opt for the audio interface as by design it has been created with audio recording in mind. Alongside this, you get access to TotalMix FX, a powerful signal routing software that does not come with the ADI-2. Hope this helps!

    Hi, all three units have excellent AD/DA conversion. Any differences between the UFX+ and Babyface Pro will be extremely subtle, and I doubt you would notice any differences in a real world scenario, e.g. a full mix. See this video here from sonic state for a great comparison between both units and Prism Dream converters; kzread.info/dash/bejne/qq2HqNOxgbbgZ84.html The ADI-2 Series is a slight step up in terms of conversion, having been designed as a top-end converter (although 2-channels only, compared with the high channel counts of the interfaces). It therefore lends itself to those situations where the extra detail may be useful such as mastering and measurement testing etc. Depends on the application of course whether you require that fine level of detail.

    Hi there! If I've understood what you're trying to do, you could try an optical to coaxial cable or optical to coax converter and run from the TV to the coaxial input on the DAC. There appears to be a few options online that are relatively cheap. We can't vouch for how well a cable or converter like this would actually work in principal though!

    What are the main differences in conversion quality between the ADI-2 Pro FS R and the Babyface Pro FS? I'm not sure if it has to do with just the implementation of the clocking (Steadyclock FS) or the monitoring capabilities of the ADI-2.

  • @SynthaxAudioUK

    @SynthaxAudioUK

    Hi Milton, both the ADI-2 Pro FS R and the Babyface Pro FS have SteadyClock FS, so you'll get the benefit of that technology with either device. Discussing sonic differences between RME devices is difficult since all of them follow a similar goal of 'transparency', although in terms of sound quality the ADI-2 series are a step above any of the standard RME audio interfaces. That being said, the Babyface Pro FS really is an excellent sounding interface already - I personally own one and I love it! And whilst I'd also love to have an ADI-2 DAC or Pro as well (maybe one day...), I don't particularly feel I'm missing out with the Babyface Pro FS - it already sounds fantastic, and gives me the benefits of proper RME drivers and all the flexibility of TotalMix FX. The dream combo is of course like we show in this video - an RME interface with an ADI-2 DAC or Pro tacked on, which will give you that 1% or 2% extra. We're talking fine margins here though, and it depends on the usage case. Most of the music I do is dance and electronic based, and personally I think an ADI-2 is probably unnecessary or overkill for what I do (synths and drum machines...). If I was recording and mixing more classical, jazz or acoustic instruments in my work, or if I was regularly mastering for myself and other people, then I'd probably be looking to add the ADI-2 Pro or DAC to my setup. As it stands I'm perfectly happy with my Babyface Pro FS for day to day music production duties, although if money was no object I'd definitely add an ADI-2 as well. Hope that helps clarify things a bit!

    Hi, we made this video in response to RME users asking for the best way to integrate the ADI-2 DAC or Pro with an RME interface. This gives you the best of both worlds - TotalMix FX for routing and mixing, and ADI-2 level conversion (which is a slight step above the converters on RME interfaces). In the case of RME's older interfaces like the original, 'non-FS' version of the Babyface Pro that we have in this video, you can also clock your interface to RME's newer clocking technology (SteadyClock FS).

    Hi Robert, wow nice setup, that’s pretty much the cutting edge of RME right there! Yeah sure you can clock over the AES-3 connection (or SPDIF or ADAT). It’s probably best to set the UCX II as clock master so that you can change sample rates from your software, and set the ADI-2 Pro to receive its clock from the AES (see 4:43 onwards). (Note that we actually set the ADI-2 Pro as master in the video, but I’m sure you’ll get the gist. You just need to do it the other way around, i.e. set the ADI-2 Pro’s clock source to AES rather than internal, and set the UCX II’s to internal in your Fireface USB Settings.)

  • @SynthaxAudioUK

    @SynthaxAudioUK

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi, the short answer is no, you won't have the same functionality as using a Babyface with an ADI-2 Pro FS R. Longer answer; the ADI-2 Pro can only operate as a class compliant interface, meaning you don't get RME's custom low-latency drivers. You also don't get access to TotalMix FX for routing control either. So yes, whilst you can connect your mic pre to the ADI-2 Pro's inputs for recording (and monitor it via the ADI-2's headphone output), what you cannot do is monitor the input signal and playback from the computer without going via your DAW, which will introduce latency. This may or may not be a problem for you. The easiest method is to simply connect the ADI-2 Pro to an interface or sound card (e.g. via ADAT).

    Thanks for your comment! The ADI-2 Series have been designed to be reference-class AD/DA converters, and so produce the best possible audio conversion as well as offering the clocking technology of SteadyClock FS. There may be some users who require the top-end of audio conversion - whether that is for mastering, or for the best possible monitoring solution - and the ADI-2 would be a fantastic addition for them when things like room treatment etc have all been considered or achieved. For the majority of users, like yourself with the Babyface Pro FS, it might not be the kind of upgrade that is needed instantly. The Babyface Pro FS already features SteadyClock FS and the audio conversion is great as it is. For those with older interfaces looking to improve audio conversion and add improved digital clocking, adding something like the ADI-2 series to a setup will help improve this without the need to buy a whole new interface. Hope this helps!

    For DAW work. I have an audient id22, say im done tracking and mixing and I want to send my 2 track mix out from DAW to outboard analog gear for processing, I'll be able send it out to the RME (with the USB) the the D>A out of the XLRs, run through outboard analog processing, then BACK into the XLR ins for A>D then back into DAW (again with USB cable) to print the final master 2 bus. This sound correct? Currently I guess I dont mind the converters on the ID22 for tracking the individual instruments, but I worry that with all the hard work of mixing, to send a 2 bus final mix down BACK out through the audient wont give me as good a conversion as the RME ADI-2. Thats another round trip needed and seems RME would hold up the best. hope that all makes sense, im still trying to work this all out. ive never looked into a high end converter like this before. thanks for the review!

    Hi, sure you can use the ADI-2 Pro for capturing your outboard in extremely high-quality. In regards to hooking it up, I'm not too familiar with the Audient but assuming it has ADAT or SPDIF you'd be better off using that (rather than USB). In using it this way, the ADI-2 Pro is just an extension of your audio interface (i.e. easy to route audio in and out of your computer via the Audient), and will also allow you to clock the two devices together. Alternatively, you can record the ADI-2 Pro via USB (running it as a class compliant interface), however you likely won't be able to use it at the same time as the Audient (or you'd at least need to switch between the two in your's DAW) settings. If you're on a Mac, creating an aggregate device may work, but you'd still need to clock the two via SPDIF/ADAT... So, the easiest method is simply to use ADAT/SPDIF!

    @@flipnap2112 Hi again, yeah the ADI-2 FS is essentially just a straight 2in/2out converter so may be all you need (if you're mainly just routing a stereo pair out and back in). Like you say there's no DSP, multiple outputs or DSD play/record etc, however if you just need detailed and transparent recording up to 192 kHz you can't really go wrong. In terms of the filters, in my experience they're extremely subtle, and probably more for Hi-Fi guys to stroke their chins over... Your mileage may vary of course. The ADI-2 FS uses the SD Sharp filter which is the most neutral and has the least effect on the frequency response, hence being the best for audio production. Of the three models - FS, Pro and DAC - all are high-end reference class DACs with exceptional sound quality. All I can really advise is trying them for yourself to see which you prefer. Hi, if you have another ADAT device I would try connecting that first (to help determine if it's an issue with your Babyface or the Behringer). I'd also recommend trying a different optical/ADAT cable, to rule out any problems with the cable. If you're still having problems please contact your local RME support, I'm sure they will be able to help you further; www.rme-audio.de/support.html

    If I’m using a cheap audio interface with a low quality DAC built in, would it make sense to connect it to a high quality external DAC? Or should I just get a new audio interface with a high quality DAC already built in?

    I would say the best option would definitely be to improve your audio interface first. This way, you’ll also get improved microphone/instrument inputs as well as better conversion too! The ADI-2 series are fantastic products but don’t discount the difference in quality from a cheap interface to a more professional one. It depends on how much I/O you need but it might be worth checking out the Fireface UCX II as an option: www.synthax.co.uk/rme/firewire-usb/rme-fireface-ucx-ii/

    Hi Chris, and congrats on ordering a UCX II! You may be able to connect all three devices, but I'd need to know a bit more about your setup; 1 - Are you on Mac or PC? 2 - What device is the 'adat interface'? i.e. what brand and model? Let me know and I'll try to help!

    @@chrismacintos6304 Ah okay, in that case it should be doable. The short answer is I'd recommend having the UCX II connected to your Mac as your interface (and set as clock master), with the Behringer hooked up over ADAT, and the ADI-2 Pro via AES-3 for your main output. Then use TotalMix to control all of your routing. Here's a more in-depth version if you want a bit more info; 1 - Connect the RME Fireface UCX II to your Mac via USB. Set this as clock master in the RME settings. 2 - Connect the Behringer via ADAT to the UCX II. Looking at the Behringer it looks like its actually an audio interface as well (I thought it was a mic pre at first glance), so I'm working on a bit of an assumption here that it will play nice with the UCX via ADAT... (Alternatively if you have any problems, you could try creating an aggregate device since you're on a Mac.) For clocking, set the Behringer to word clock slave via the back panel. Note that I'm also assuming that you can clock the Behringer over ADAT - if not you'll need to clock it to the UCX via the BNC connection. 3 - RME ADI-2 Pro connected to Fireface UCX II via AES-3 (AES-3 is available on both the UCX II and ADI-2 Pro FS R via each device's breakout cables). I'd recommend using dedicated digital XLR cables for this - you might get away without one if you have the two units right next to each other, in which case the breakout cables may reach. They're pretty short though, and we'd always recommend connecting via dedicated cables anyway - more room to work with, less chance of putting strain on the cables, easier to replace etc. If you buy a pair of AES cables, you can connect the second cable from the Pro back to the UCX, which will allow you to use the ADI-2 Pro's inputs for recording as well. For the clocking, set the ADI-2 Pro as slave (via its front panel). 4 - Finally you'll need to set up all of your routing in TotalMix FX. This should be fairly straight forward if you have previous experience using an RME interface (set the AES-3 output as your Main output, and set up your inputs and outputs for the Behringer). If you're new to TotalMix it may lead to some head-scratching at first though - I'd recommend watching RME's TotalMix tutorial series, or our own videos (they're from back in the day, but still relevant); TotalMix FX Beginner's Guide kzread.info/head/PL0QKeSpeDQwHGxAhD-cJSIBZC7_en5rck RME TotalMix FX Tutorial Part 1 (of 2) - Synthax UK kzread.info/dash/bejne/pXd8ldOPka-yXaw.html Best of luck with it and enjoy your UCX II. @@chrismacintos6304 Hey Chris no problem, there’s a lot of different formats out there - we’re thinking about creating some new vids to explain each one, so watch this space :) You’ll get a breakout cable included in the box with each device, they’re basically just there to add more I/O that RME didn’t have space for on the main body. I’d recommend buying proper cables though still - just Google digital AES-3 XLR cables. Make sure you get digital ones of course (analogue XLR cables won’t work for AES). “all i have to do is connect them with 2 fem/male XLR’S?” - Yep! As you’ve spotted, the red and white connectors on the breakouts are for SPDIF. This is another digital audio format that is similar to AES-3 (and ADAT). You can actually use this if you want instead of the AES connection, it’s up to you (just search for SPDIF coax cables). I personally favour the AES connection as the 3-pin XLR is a more solid connector, plus it leaves the SPDIF available for other devices if you fancy running them through the ADI-2 Pro (most consumer devices have SPDIF on there - TVs, games consoles, CD players etc). (Watching blu-rays through a PS4, the ADI-2 pro and a good set of headphones is great fun!)

    Hi there! Yes, it's possible to use the ADI-2 Pro FS R as a class-compliant audio interface and record with it! As it's operating in class-compliant mode, there is no access to RME's TotalMix FX routing software however, which may be a deal-breaker if this is something you rely on. If so, you're best checking out the rest of RME's audio interface range!

    Hi there! Of course the ADI-2 Pro has great quality when it comes to the AD conversion, but wouldn't be our first choice when it comes to recording live instruments (mainly down to latency). If it was for printing a final 2-channel mix or for archiving something like vinyl, they're very useful. But for recording, you'd want one of RME's interfaces to make the most of the low-latency monitoring offered in TotalMix! Hope this helps!

Then went to learn some other things, and am now back. LOL Ok, I now have a Babyface Pro FS. BUT, I planned to connect it to the ADI-2 pro. But, here are a few questions: 1a.)Would it be better to use something like a Ferrofish if I want to use multiple analog preamps & effects processors, and just use the ADI-2 for Monitoring? 1b.)If so, would it be better to link them through something like the Digiface USB. 1c.) If not, should I just get a patch bay, to patch the ins & outs to the babyface? 2.) If I am misunderstanding, How would you recommend that I execute?

  • @SynthaxAudioUK

    @SynthaxAudioUK

    Жыл бұрын

    @@sekritskworl-sekrit_studios Hi again; 1a) Yes you can do that. If you plan to record lots of channels, it makes more sense to have a multi-channel (i.e. more than 2) converter, such as a Ferrofish Pulse 16. You can also still use the Ferrofish to feed an ADI-2 via ADAT. 1b.) It depends, do you need the other I/O available on the Babyface Pro? The Microphone preamps, Line Ins and Outs, DSP FX (EQ, Reverb and Delay), plus the physical buttons and volume encoder. If you don't need any of those then the Digiface USB could be a better choice. 1c.) This is another option. However you won't be able to record to single tracks - a patchbay in this instance would presumably just save you from having to plug / unplug your instruments all the time. So it depends if you want to record multiple channels at once - if you're only recording individual channels then this could work. 2.) Again it depends what you're trying to do, in audio there are often 'many roads to Rome' :) . I would start with the number of channels you require (inputs and outputs), then look at what features you need. All the best.

  • @SynthaxAudioUK

    @SynthaxAudioUK

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes the ADI-2 Pro FS R is effectively an interface, but it runs in Class Compliant mode. This means you don’t get the benefits of RME’s TotalMix FX. The ADI-2’s focus is more on audio reproduction and conversion and getting the best quality sound from its two input and two output channels. If you look at the new Fireface UCX II or the 802, there is far more in terms of connectivity and features when it comes to actually recording music, which is primarily what an interface is used for. That’s why in this video we are combining an interface with the ADI-2, mainly for its high-end monitoring capabilities. Hope this helps!

    Hi, so you can see audio outputting in TotalMix FX but cannot receive audio on your ADI-2 Pro? As we mention at the beginning of this video, this tutorial was developed for connecting an audio interface to the ADI-2 Series as a way of improving the monitoring capabilities of any audio production setup. As the UK distributor for RME we get asked this question a lot, so we thought we’d make a video on it! Later in the video we discuss connecting the ADI-2 series via USB, though as you’ll appreciate, you can’t record microphones solely with an ADI-2, as there is no phantom power. So you’d still need to connect an audio interface with this I/O to be able to do any sort of music production. Hope this helps explain!
