So I’m not no smart person I don’t know how these things are or what they’re called but I recently got so bored so I just found my old wii and there’s random wires and I see that the main thing is the red white and yellow plug thing and when I look at the back of my TV there’s only two holes for the plugs to connect... then the rest are box shapes or whatever ( I have a samsung smart tv )

Just FYI you don’t need the converter. The Green port on the tv shows Y / Video for a reason. It is a component/RCA in one port. You put yellow in green port, and audio as normal and tv will detect if it’s rca or component connection

i'm pretty certain that the "Y" marking on the green colored input of a component does not mean yellow. you have the green one marked y, a red one marked pr, and a blue one marked pb. all the ones i've had if you plug the yellow composite a/v cable into the green, you'll get black and white pic. the tvs that are made to use the composite yellow vid cable with the tv's component jacks will have split color on the jack. it'll be marked with both green and yellow on the same jack. these are designed to be used as either composite or component.

Y is the symbol for Luma. If you see a mini DIN on some devices labeled "Y/C" That's for separated or S-Video. The same goes for the back of some Commodore video monitors. There's a Y for the luma (strictly greyscale) video and a C (for Chroma) to define the colours. Y/Pb/Pr or component divides the chroma into two for blue and red colours. Your TV you may have to go through the setup menu to reconfigure the composite video as it may only appear as black and white by default. Other TVs it probably does this automatically.

my tv was similar but found a way to do without getting an upscaler device or even a wii to component cable which is sold on amazon also. the left & right audio plugs red and white go into the same on the tv and then if you look at your 3 video inputs, all are labeled but under the green one has the symbol "Y/Video" which to me thought meant yellow so I did. first result wii showed but was black and white, and then I realized that my tv has 2 modes for a/v and component and I was on component so I switch to A/V and it works with color

I know this is a year later, and perhaps too late, but are you sure that there isn’t anything you need to adjust on the TV to convert the component Y inputti standard composite? It seems weird that it would label it “Y/video” if it didn’t have that feature. There must be something to let the TV know, because a Y Luma signal for component is much different than the composite signal, so I’m guessing there must be something in the TV’s menu to adjust what signal to expect for the input.

If you have the option to use component why not use it? Granted your using a N64 which is world famous for trash video output.. but if your console supports a component signal why settle for crappy composite. You guys asking about ps2, guess what it supports component. And keep in mind these cheap little analog to digital converters add lag to your signal. If you need to buy a scaler, go buy a OSSC if your that determined to play on a modern tv via HDMI. Composite to this scaler = garbage in and worse garbage out. Ugh

I'm more confused than ever. I bought the mini game unit. It looks like an old Nintendo. This comes with 2 cords. One that plugs into the wall socket and one with the red/yellow/white plug ins. I bought the converter to connect to my new RCA TV as you recommend. I plugged in the NES box and the power light came on. Then I plugged in the red/yellow/white plugs into the mini converter box. That box came with 2 cords also. The second cord plugs into the back of the mini converter box. It's connection is thin and only fits in 1 slot. The 3 color connector cord is attached to the USB/Power slot on the TV. The game still does not work. Your example had an extra cord that is not provided in either kit and plugs into the opposite side of the colored plugs. What am I missing here?

One of my tvs wont play it at all when i connect it to the composite video in. I really hope its not the N64 unit i just bought but im sure this will help. So its not me the games dont look good on newer TV all Newer HD TV because there system were not designed to work on HD tvs is that correct ?

The N64 outputs 240p instead of 480i and new TVs don't support the resolution. Consoles from the Sega Dreamcast onward output 480i.

Are you trying to play PS1 games on the PS2. The PS2 outputs PS1 games in their original resolution of 240p. Modern TVs don't support 240p. It was a hack on top of the NTSC standard that only worked with CRT TVs.

“Y” is for “Gamma”, a greek letter which in lowercase looks very similar: “γ”. It denotes the luminosity signal - the black-and-white picture. The other two channels, chromatic red and chromatic blue, convey the color information. To learn more, see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/YCbCr

My hd av cable that plugs into my Xbox 360 has 6 different av cables. Two are red, one is yellow, one is white, one is green and one is blue. If i get a converter do I only use one red and the white/yellow cables or is their a converter with 6 slots? I’m not good with these things so i could use some advice. Btw the tv I’m using is a 4K roku tv.

Do you happen to know if this will work with my PlayStation 1 console? My LG tv actually has the red, white and yellow RCA ports but when I turn it on, it says 'invalid format'. The PSone logo comes on the screen in black and white and fuzzy, then 'invalid format' pops up. I also don't see a way to change the format on this tv so I'm hoping that what you recommend is what I need. Thank you in advance for any help
