How To Connect A Marx 404 Block Signal

Having found there's no source for instructions sometimes when purchasing Prewar track accessories I decided to do a video for this classic piece.
Hope this helps.........MT

I could be wrong but the block signal was more then a indicator, or place to hold a train, it was so you could run two trains on the same track loop. The one would make the other one run once it crossed a section of track activating the relay and making the setting train no move and the the other train would do the same thing. if you ran them slow and the track was long, the setting train would set for a long time but a shorter track or faster train speed, they would run almost continuously until one got to close and then the block signal would stop it till the other train gained ahead. the stopped track could also be powered but wit ha much lower current to just slow down the train instead of stopping it.

A Great scenario but this Marx Signal is a manual operated signal. Now if you had a big enough track and had a turnout onto another section of track, you could set the zone to stop a train in time to let another train pass on the main line before your train in waiting was activated again. but that still has to be done manually at that block signal. Power does remain elsewhere on the rest of the track except the zone set at the signal location. Things to consider ! Thanks for your comments.....

Hi - I put this question out to a couple of you tube train enthusiasts and hopefully I didn't already ask you - I have a 20's era standard gauge lionel train that I can't get the light working in the passenger car even with a new bulb. The wire looks pretty worn and I wonder if I need a new wire, if so can you tell me what kind of wire should I use? I tried something I had on hand and it sparked so I know that wasn't right. I appreciate any help you can give. Thanks

Hi Freddie Well w/o seeing the problem I can offer this..... If the bulb is good trace the wire from end to end to see where the fault is. Typical wire is 22-24 gauge. the socket could be the issue? make sure the spring and contactor is seated correctly. Follow the wire thru the car to make sure it hasn't any bare spots rubbing on metal causing a short. That may be the reason for the spark. Hope this helps Mark T

@@mt.trainrestorations5931 Thank you for answering! The socket could be the issue since there was no screw part, only the outer metal frame, I had to order a socket to put in there. The bulb fits & screws into it so I assumed it was ok. Also you are right about bare spots, the whole wire was mostly bare spots. Luckily I was able to find on ebay a wire attached to the washer so I ordered that and when it comes I hope that by using new wire that it lights finally. Thanks for your help, it's great to be able to get advice from someone who knows a little about it!
