    I have problems understanding spoken Portuguese. I can’t make out what people are saying. I’ve been studying for 6 years now and I’ve visited Brasil 17 times. I have been practicing every day with my girlfriend for 3 years. She only speaks Portuguese. I can only understand an occasional word and some very basic phrases we use every day. I watch movies and videos and I have classes every week. I use apps like Duolingo and Italki. I usually learn very quickly. When I ask questions online some people recognize me and become angry because they either don’t believe me or assume that I don’t study. What can I do to learn without translating everything into English in my head or with a translator? I can spell Portuguese words very well because I recognize them after seeing them once or twice. Verbs are very difficult. We never learned grammar terminology in school for some reason. So when I read about verbs and Portuguese words books use grammar terminology that I don’t understand. I had never heard of the verb “to be” or “prepositions” and “articles”. Thanks

    Olá, tudo bem? Learning a new language is a real challenge! As I can see from your comment, you are doing your best. Don't give up. In order to understand better spoken Portuguese (or any other language), I suggest that you listen to songs, watch some KZread channels with content in Portuguese, and try to simply repeat what you hear...without translating word for word. It is important to get accustomed to how the language sounds first...as a little kid! 😉

    Thanks! I’ve already been watching KZread videos and movies on Netflix for several years now and I practice every day with my girlfriend who only speaks Portuguese. When I say I can’t understand what people say I mean that I can’t repeat it because I can’t make out what they are saying. I have to translate almost everything into English to understand what words mean. Even words that I know have to be translated in my head because they don’t create images or ideas in my head like English words do. It’s been very frustrating. I have classes every week and I try doing several other things like apps and books. Thanks

    Try breaking the Portuguese into words in portuguese and just practice those instead of translating. First learn how to say them before you look them up. Then when you know some without a definition try to plug in a meaning in English. I have been studying Portuguese for 3 years now and I only just started fully understanding when people speak to me and it is still not 100%. Sometimes I just catch words. But don’t give up! Try all new methods and maybe one can work for you. I watch things in Portuguese and use Portuguese subtitles so I have to try to figure it out. It also helps if you choose programs that are very simple and everyday conversations. I just started the show “Modern Family” on Netflix and it’s helped me a lot with basic conversations. Some things are lost on me, but I don’t let it get me down. Learning a new language is such an accomplishment on its own, it’s okay to not be perfect. I believe in you!

    Hi, why do some adjectives need 'com' in front of them and some don't? For example, 'Eu estou com fome' vs 'eu estou cansada'?

  • @PlainPortuguese

    @PlainPortuguese

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi! Interesting question! You should use 'com' before a noun, for example, 'Eu estou com fome (with hunger)'; 'Eu estou com medo (with fear)'; 'Eu estou com dor (in pain)'. And nothing before an adjective, 'Eu estou feliz'; 'Eu estou cansada' Obs. 'Frio' can be both a noun and an adjective (when qualifying a masculine noun); therefore, you will see the following occurences, 'Eu estou com frio (I am feeling cold)' - noun; 'Hoje está frio (Today is cold)' - adjective. 😉

    If you are talking about a group of two or more people and you don’t know the gender, or the gender is mixed, do you always refer to them as “eles”? Do you you always use the masculine noun when the gender is unknown or to refer to something in general? I hope that question makes sense
