How to configure Beetle PSX HW of RetroArch + Examples

Ойындар

Beetle PSX HW and RetroArch configuration in under 10 minutes.
Features a showcase of currently available enhancement settings that should make your PS1 experience more pleasant and help you make an educated decision, so that you can tailor the enhancements to your own personal needs. Mouse Injector is something that I also briefly cover.
This guide was made for Windows 11, while RetroArch currently supports platofrms as old as Windows 7. Assuming the core behaves the same way across other platforms, the examples should be relevant on any operating system.

    Nice, you've included several tracks here, and put together quite a bit of scientific knowledge! I've always been overwhelmed with the endless settings and details, so this will definitely help. Thanks!

    This is the best video I've ever seen on this topic. This type of games were meant to be viewed on a CRT, so it's reasonable to have some adjustment (according to personal taste too). So there are valid reasons why we have those switches about graphics and filtering. Thank you for such detailed video!

    Great video! Talk about an in-depth tutorial! But Retro Arch really needs it with all the options that Beetle and the renderers provide, it's easy to get lost.

    Thank you ever so much!!! I was having so much trouble configuring RetroArch to run Star Trek: Invasion on PSX (PAL) until I saw your Video. As RetroArch is far more complex an emulator compared sPSXe 2.0.5, which I couldn't run this game upon. Again, Many thanks...

    Yes, most of them can be found in standalone DuckStation, but a few, like GTE Overclock are not present.

    Great tutorial, I've learned a lot of concepts. On my PC Beetle doesn't start if I have the Internal GPU resolution at 8x, could it be because I'm using Duimon shaders? My PC should be powerful enough for that.

  • @DfactorLongplays

    @DfactorLongplays

    14 күн бұрын

    If it's the shaders, then you could be running out of VRAM for your GPU, rather than raw power. You could try measuring VRAM usage with 3rd party tools when at 4x with shader, 4x without shader, 8x without shader and see the usage difference. I think the higher the internal resolution, the bigger the shader load as well. Plus, the shader scale, amount of passes and settings affect this too.

  • @DfactorLongplays

    @DfactorLongplays

    5 ай бұрын

    That would mean that 1) The image file you're trying to open is not compatible with the core. Online documentation does show a list of supported file extensions. 2) The installation of the core has failed. Which I've never seen happening, but could be a thing if your RetroArch folder is read-only or there's no free space.

    Not entirely sure but I think Retroarch got an update on Steam. Can't seem to access the Quick Menu anymore, F1 does nothing. Unless I'm missing something. Aside from that this guide is wonderful! Its a much better option to Mednafen if you ask me.🥰

    Thanks! Settings > Input > Hotkeys > Menu Toggle It should have a gamepad value and F1. Quick Menu will not appear if no content is launched. The behavior is the same on 1.17 (current latest Steam version).

    Thanks. Since you did not mention any particular error messages nor when it happens, so far there have been 2 common problems that people had that prevented them from playing. 1. Your device/graphics card does not support v1.3+ Vulkan API. The oldest Nvidia cards are select Maxwell 1 cards, stuff like G210 or GT710 won't work. 2. The disc image you're trying to open is in an incompatible format or the wrong file is pointed at. Behavior between Steam's and standalone Beetle are the same.

    May depend on the game! Some older titles may act up when DualShock is picked. If DualShock is not working in any title, then there might be an issue.

    @IrOnMaN1789. No, that wouldn't be it. Card-specific software stopped being a thing during the 90s. Besides, this whole video was made on a Nvidia GPU. If you think it could be your GPU at fault, which Nvidia card do you have?

    @IrOnMaN1789. You might be onto something. That card does support Vulkan, but up to version 1.2. The latest versions of Beetle require 1.3, I believe. So that is likely the reason why you're not getting any output. In this case, I would suggest keeping the front-end and the Beetle at OpenGL (marked as "gl').

    the problem with Tomb Raider games despite maybe looking better with the wider aspect ratio all hud elements and menus looks stretched if is not in 4:3.

  • @DfactorLongplays

    @DfactorLongplays

    4 ай бұрын

    Yeah, using any form of widescreen means that 2D/Sprite-based content will be stretched. That's something the user will have to deal with, alternatively, texture override could potentially solve this, but each individual game would require a custom mod. That's why my PS1 TR walkthroughs are still in 4:3.

    Nah im stick with psxfin (aka psxEmulatot 1.13)and DuckStation. And its not just a some kind of fanboism. DuckStation have a great feature - switch modes immeaditly during gameplay. You can see of enchanments make some unseen at first GFX glitches. Especially for Widescreen hack. Another reason. Plugin emulators are worse than non-plugin based ones. And libreto-based multi-system emuls even worse. Not bad maybe. But DuckStation just way better. And easier to setup. So, jut - why any else? DuckStation do enhacments visuals. Do that fast and during gameplay. Its not chose of libraries-mpdules-plugins functional and non-features emulator. Psxfin yes - simplest one - minimum enhancments. DS have everything.

    All I see is misinformation and assumptions. Most cores in RA reflect graphical changes immediately, Beetle is no exception, so I'm not sure why are you even bringing that up (three times in your post). None of the RA cores are plugin-based, that design is archaic and is no longer used in any modern software. If you have problems with the front-end, then that's on you, you don't have to come up with a reason to dislike something. "Even worse", is a strong conclusion, especially when it's backed by absolutely nothing. The process of setting up DuckStation to the same degree as shown in this video would be almost identical to Beetle, so it's kinda hilarious for me to read this. I would say, expand your horizons, monopoly in emulation space was never a good thing.
