I was having some issues with my poweredge 710 that I got from a friend, tried putting new drives in with a fresh copy of windows server 2019 and the drives would not show. Turns out reading on some forums that a pre-exisitng raid set up could cause this issues. This video helped me out so much and I was finally able to start the OS install. Absolute life saver!

Finally a fast and simple one for configuring my server

I have a Dell poweredge R510 with a Perc 6/I raid controller. I have 5 drives (2TB per Drive) in RAID 5 with 1 PD as a dedicated hot spare. I need to now make the partition in windows. It’s over 2TB so I assume I select GPT vs MBR? Do I create the partition in disk management as a simple partition or what partition do I select? Thanks!

Hello Sir, You video is really awesome but I get an error when I hit ENTER, the error says "Virtual disk creation failed". For your information I am using brand new hard drives and in PD management it's showing as READY state. you advice will be of great help.

Works the same for the Dell R 920 with E7 chipset.

Just letting ya know r710 raid controller only can compute 2.5tb per VD. I found out the hard way. Great video! I have 4x1tb+4x250gb it wouldn't compile them all into RAID0 1 VD. I had to split into 2 VDs 1 VD for the 4x250gb, 1VD for the 4x1TB. So why cant i get all 4TB working in 1 vd but not stacked together?

Could you please show us how to change the hard drive status from the Blocked to the Ready I am stuck on this one. I am trying to GPART hard drive using GPARTED Live for that I need to make RAID 0 on each hard drive to be able to see in GPARTED but few storage devices are coming up as Blocked so I can not apply RAID on it. I have tried with the firmware updates but still the result is same. I am not sure what I am missing here. I am using R630 and PERC is H730. I would really appreciate if you can enlighten me with the procedure of to unlock the storage device in PERC H730 Dell R630. Thank you for your time :)

this is about the best i seen so far on using The PERC 5, thank you. But just a question real quick, when you do initialization, if there is a operating system on the drives, does the fully wipe it, where you can do something like install a fresh copy of windows server 2003?

If you delete the whole RAID Config. and start the initialization you will loose all data so you have to install the OS new (fresh)

is there a way for the computer to see the 2 drives as two separate drives like on a normal PC? I have 2 1tb drives in the r610 that i want to store 2 separate libraries on. in a raid they backup to each other correct?

RAID-0 would be close. It just does striping, but I'm guessing it might show up as one large drive. What you want is JBOD (Just a Bunch Of Disks) or "no RAID". I might look around for that option. Unfortunately, my two R610s are currently in production on a work day, so I'm not going to reboot one just to look at the config. Sorry. :-) I just thought of a possible way. Just configure two VDs, each with one drive in it. That ought to do.

Hi there .. Could really use your help. I am trying to set RAID 0 on the Dell T7500, using its onboard Marvell SAS controller for a backup drive and use an SSD as my boot drive. The system anyhow is not working as it expects me to load the OS on the raid drive. Can i set up SSD for boot and the RAID drives as a backup ? Is this a valid option ?

Do you have the model number of the onboard SAS controller. in order to run a back up you would have to run to partitions one RAID independently for the SSD and one RAID for the back up drive

I have a question. Just purchased a Poweredge t610 (the tower variant) - for home usage............ How reliable do you reckon the RAID system is on this old hardware? I'd hate to set up RAID and have it fail. I guess it's a difficult question to ask, but would you know what the failure rate is after 10 years? Thanks.

Its actually not bad I've ran old units for a long time and everything in a server is meant to be redundant. If the controller fails the drives are still active and the cache keeps the RAID configuration. I suggest keeping a spare RAID controller to prevent any down time and a spare drive

You need to switch the drives to GPT and change the BIOS to UEFI in order to recognize 4TB drive

How do I bypass this? I want the OS to see all drives directly. When I removed all the virtual disks, the OS saw nothing.

If I had 8 drives could have 4 of them in RAID 1 in 4 groups, or is there a limit on the number of groups ?

no. you can't have the RAID 1 for 4 hard drive, but you can have RAID 5 or 10. But for 8 hard drive I would choose RAID 10.
