In part 1 of this video series, we look at the key takeaways when composing music for advertisements:
- Programming your session to stay within a strict budget
- Creating 'Inflection Points' with instrumentation
- Sustaining momentum through Ostinatos, mirroring midi across instruments
- Humanizing midi through light quantization.
Stay tuned for part 2 where we cover mixing and mastering of the same session.

Well done... 👍 Concerning your question at about 11:00 - YES, it would indeed be super helpful to have a way in Kontakt to „jump“ to the library in the list on the left that’s providing the patch you’re seeing on the right... But alas, I’m pretty sure that’s simply not a feature in Kontakt. I looked for it myself for quite a while, and didn’t find it. I also never saw anyone in any video, stream etc. doing it. So, Native Instruments, if you’re reading this: PLEASE add that feature... people are having more than one or two screen-lengths of libraries nowadays, they got dozens... we need better navigation.

I really find your videos helpful. Thank you. I don't know if this helps, but in reference to the question you asked at 11:00 regarding Kontakt, I discovered a feature called quick load (cmd-F on a Mac). You can save lists of Multis, instruments or banks. You can then click on the saved sound you want and it loads instantly. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.

I don't write music, but this is really interesting. Looking forward to Part II. I wondered where the music was from when viewing Jonathan Wyner's new series. I quite like it. The piano strike really registers. Interesting to see how the video editor uses the knocks; they come off as quite subtle.

Great video! Thanks for making and sharing it. I have a question that is not essential to the content. I noticed that you are using a normal panning on the strings rather than stereo or binaural panning (right click on the pan knob in the mixer to select). I often find that it makes especially strings sound odd or makes them harder to fit into the mix because that kind of panning just lowers the volume on one channel rather than shift the information over to the other. So, one tends to lose information that normally is essential to a natural sound. Did you do this intentionally? If so, when do you use it and why? Perhaps this is just a quick sketch for the purpose of illustration with lots of mixing and mastering ahead. And perhaps you would replace the existing panning with something else later on (say the panning in iZotope's Neutron 2 or so). Then, of course, you can ignore the question.

Sounds great Geoff, great video. My instinct would have been to start quiet and build but the idea of an initial attention grabber is spot on with modern trailers and adverts. I'd be interested to know if you had a video or script/structure to work off to hit certain points or if it was left to you

Excellent question. It depends. Usually, unless the composer and video editor are working in tandem, the music is locked and the picture is flexible, and can be cut to the music. Sometimes, major motion pictures work like this too, for example all of the music in Gone Girl was essentially ‘baked’, and video editors cut certain scenes around it. But it doesn’t always work like that. However, more often than not, an assembly cut is made of the video (looser than a rough cut) and then the video team finds some music (from a library or service) which they can tighten their assembly cut around. At iZotope, for example we did that very system for our video with Exponential Audio.

Thanks, didn't know that about gone girl. I've only scored a few shorts but a director I've worked with before sent me the last script before shooting and I wrote several pieces which he edited to, the cast apparently listened to it to 'get into the space' on set; it's a nice way to work when you can.

I composed a theater production with film in it and I did not use much quantization because like you said you want the human element, the human element makes better music.

What normally comes first the video or the music? Basically I have been taking KZread adverts and stripping back the music so there is only the voice over and putting my own music to it. I have a showreel of this work. What can I do next. Send them to ad agencies.

Please explain how you can end the music with the final beat at the :30 sec mark when a TV commercial ends exactly at the :30 sec mark? That would be cut off completely, am I not wrong? Love the video but am confused about how you come to this conclusion.

I heard him say it's fine if you have a reverb tail at the end (past 30 sec) as they often fade it out etc... So as long as your composition lands at 30 sec... you're in the clear, try it out and see for yourself. My biggest thing is trying to get the tempo right so i can lock my grid to a even 4 or 8 bar loop, odd numbers are weird.

Aren't you missing the most crucial aspects of writing for adverts? 1) The brief 2) The video - you can write whatever you want, but if it doesn't follow and satisfy the brief, the agency is never going to pick it.
