I really love your videos. I appreciate that you take the time to add timestamps, don’t waste 5 minutes on an intro about nothing, have PRACTICAL tips and have clearly mapped out what you’re going to say so you’re concise and articulate. And I absolutely LOVE your style! I’m a mid century modern/industrial accents girl, so I really love your aesthetic too! So many designers on KZread are very into boho and farmhouse and it’s just not for me. 💗

I like your channel for two reasons. 1. I can’t stand another farmhouse decor video. 1. I am interested in the principals that make a home look warm, comfortable and put together, and you are speaking and teaching in principals that I can apply as a very middle class American that is flexible and not stuck in any particular decor. I always look at a room and say “ why is this nice?” You are giving my good but undefined instincts more shape and substance. Your doing a really good job here.

I have a similar issue. My style is sort of mid-century/glam. I just inherited a painting that an aunt did. It's 20" x 24", depicting a gray weathered wood barn, rock wall, fence, and the focal point is a beautiful white flowering tree, like a pear or apple or something. Farmhouse people would go ga-ga. It's pretty, and it's nice to finally have a real painting vs. prints. But doesn't go with my style at all, yet I want to find a way to display it respectfully. It has a good blue sky, and the grays and browns in it sort of work with my color palette. The best thing I can think of is putting it on a small wall next to the doorway between my dining area and kitchen (sort of out of main view, frankly), and swapping out the wide weathered wood looking frame and putting the canvas in a thin walnut wood floater frame instead.

Isn’t mixing design styles a design style of its own, called “eclectic”? 🙊 I’d bring out the heirloom pieces if you really like them and they bring you joy (you gotta kondo your interior style!), but of course, not if you have them simply because they are heirlooms and you feel obligated.

You are so right with the 20% part . It breaks the mold and sets the focus points of the room design . I never looked at it quite this way but seemingly that is how my hybrid blend comes out . Excellent perspective and video .

Ditto that! Just discovered this channel, have now subscribed after watching and liking 20+ videos. Loving Nick’s ideas and positivity to-boot! A lot of what he says are things I never realized, or read and forgot. His perspective really resonates with me. I absolutely love learning, but I don’t need snobbery...well maybe a teeny bit - (I also hate ‘live-laugh-love’ kitschy stuff and ugly ‘marshmallow’ furniture...evocative of people who don’t understand that beautiful furniture can be very comfortable if well-made (often boomers (sorry, not sorry!) no really, some boomers have *excellent taste* in design like my favorite aunt, and some gen-xers and millennials have very little). Anyway, I want more videos where intelligent folks like Nick talk about design and are so open-minded and positive about different styles. So refreshing. :)

Great to see. I really like the shape and aesthetic of mid century modern furniture but find the colours too bold (I can do teal but not the yellows and oranges). I’m trying to make it work in an industrial setting as my new home is very industrial. Large, single space with poured concrete walls (so you can see the wooden panels they used to make it) and roller shutters over the doors - it’s very hot where I live so idea is you roll shutters down at night for security but can leave all the doors behind them open. Maybe a video on how to work with a space that conflicts with your basic design aesthetic would be useful. Or mid century modern in industrial space or modern minimalism in old style home with lots of traditional features etc

I have a very nice brick ranch home in Texas, I moved there recently from Southern California. When I moved I went from a 1800 sq ft home to a 2980 sq ft house. The house was built in the 70’s and when you enter the house you are in an entryway with the dining room to your right, the living room to your left and the family room straight forward. The living room has a recessed ceiling and a post that sits at the corner creating two arches, one open to the entry and one open to the family room. The living room has a huge curved bay of windows with white wooden Louvered shades and the family room has a cathedral beamed ceiling with a large brick fireplace on one wall and large window on the back wall with larger scale white painted wooden louvered shades. The living room windows face the front of the house and the family room windows are facing the back directly opposite of the living room. So I had a design challenge, how to make the furniture I already had fit into a room that is open to another and have a completely different style yet look complimentary to each other. I did what you said and took out my iPad and drew out the rooms layout and placed all the furniture into the room. I had two large area rugs on Art Deco floral motif Ed rug in a baby blue with pink and gold florals in the corners and center and one that was a Art Deco geometric circles and squares in shades of olive green and browns. The furniture pieces I had already were a large China display case, in dark wood mirrored back and glass. A large overstuffed modern light mint green leather sofa an Art Deco curio cabinet in a blond wood, two upholstered modern styled geometric patterned light olive toned upholstered chairs and ottoman, 3 Tiffany stained glass lamps an oak player piano upright, a set of coffee and end tables in mission style and an octagon very heavily carved traditional table. I had looked at all the design style videos and I knew I didn’t want a farmhouse aesthetic and really moved toward a mid century modern style. So I grouped the living room furniture together in greens and blue modern mixed with mission style having the Tiffany lamps all set in the front room, then I went online to offer up to see what kind of deals I could find. I found a great lane end table and a small scaled emerald green leather recliner all for a great price and I went to Macy’s and found a mid century style apple green leather sofa and love seat. I also found a set of vintage perfect condition acclaim two tiered end tables and matching coffee table in dark browns that are perfect mid century modern pieces. I have a huge collection of sea foam green pottery vases teapots jars and urns, and a large collection of 1930’s Fenton hobnail blue glassware and lime green glassware. I guess you could call my design style eclectic because I have pieces from the 100 years all living harmoniously together. I set the family room furniture in the opposite of the living room keeping a nice open space for flow between the two rooms added some blue pottery to my collection and filled the display cases on top of the Art Deco display case are a collection of multiple sized large to small crystal balls in various clear materials. I took a few glass balls and added them to the living room coffee table and used the green Fenton ruffled dishes as accent pieces in the family room, I also have a 1927 victrola which I placed on a table in the corner of the family room couch and love seat with an aluminum Art Deco airplane on the top. I then ordered a collection of pillows in greens and blues in beaded sequined and Mongolian lambs wool and put them on all the couches keeping that blue and green color palette I found some great modern table lamps that were glass urn shaped in a green glass that faded to blue glass and had simple modern green woven fabric shades the color of the arm chair. I really am happy with the way I got everything to coordinate together in a nice designer finished looking floor plan. When Christmas came I decided to put a 7.5’ tree in the front window and decorated it all in glass colored beaded garland crystal ornaments apple green, blue and a few burgundy and gold large ornaments. A beautiful wide ribbon in dark blue with peacock feather print in gold and green and put a huge bow on the top of the tree with cascading tails down the sides in big drape loops I finished it with some peacock themed ornaments, glass cut snowflakes and 150 hand blown glass icicles. It really looks dramatic and is the perfect tree having lights that fade from clear to colored back and forth in slow fades. I’ve been watching your videos and really enjoy them, mostly to make sure my design skills are on par and that I haven’t made a disaster of chaos in style combinations. I have nice creamy shades of gold toned and white painted walls and woodwork and am now at the stage of picking out new wall colors, I don’t want the rooms painted in all one color but picking the feature walls and adding a deep green color that ties everything in. My dining room is all mission style in burgundy and green fabrics and area rug so the flow from room to room is nice as well.

I think the 80/20 thing is a good rule of thumb when mixing styles like farmhouse and glam, where there is not much stylistic overlap. But for example, I think you can mix up Bauhaus, Mid Century and Scandi with more freedom, because they are naturally complimentary.

  • @timward3116
    @timward31169 ай бұрын

I think that two styles that go well together are Mid-Century and Mid-Century Modern, both of which were actually pretty popular back around 1960's and were often blended. Wood panelling, maybe some ornate walnut end tables with large lamps (from Mid-Century) worked well with pops of golds, oranges, rusts, and avocados in carpeting, fabric couches, etc (from Mid-Century Modern). The cohesion was found not in a similarity of style but in their proportions and unifying, compatible colors. I grew up in that era, and I remember it pretty well. But certain TV shows from that era give a good idea of this blending (The Dick Van Dyke Show, Bewitched, The Brady Bunch). The trick was that the piece had to be both beautiful in its own right, not be too big or too small, and not clash.

What I’d love to see you cover is how to incorporate pieces that may not perfectly fit the design style you are evolving towards, but did fit your “old” aesthetic and still may be needed before you can afford to replace them (or maybe you just love them for sentimental reasons!)….. how does one make them work with your new look?

I have mixed traditional with boho because I couldn't afford to throw everything out. But I had my traditional furniture reupholstered in a kind of neutral with undertones of jewel tones and mixed accessories, fabrics and other things that are more boho. It ends up being 80/20. I think people should surround themselves with things that make them happy and comfortable . Alot of my pieces are from our travels. 😍

I think that's at the core personal style and design for me, to be able to create your own narrative and pick patterns, forms and colors that bring it together. As you even need to educate which piece belongs to which interior styles, it shows for me, that it's not as clear cut out, what works together.

Nick, your videos are fantastic. Thank you! I just moved into a new apartment and decluttered (wasn't all that cluttered but ruthless this time LOL). With a balcony backing onto a forest (love, love, love) I feel the need to bring nature in and the crazy colours of my last place (which I loved in that space) just don't feel right anymore. Scandinavian and Japanese Zen feel right. Love mid-century as well. THANK YOU!!

Nick! This is helpful! I have been having such a hard time finding MCM and "Gothic" (for lack of a better word) I have been searching and I feel like there is nothing that meets my level of darkness I want that is also modern, sleek and clean. The 80/20 makes me feel like I am on the right track ;) Thanks, love your videos!

Thank you Nick. I started out with a plan to decorate my first home ever in a Wabi Sabi/Minimalist style and ended up with Maximalist/Mid-Century Modern. Go figure. Anyway, I think -- now that you've explained the 80/20 rule -- that the Wabi Sabi type furniture (end and coffee tables) and ceramics in neutral tones make the two styles I ended up with cohesive. The two problems left are that only space for a tv is over fire place (yes, I know), and the focal of the living room over the couch has a heat pump at the top so the canvas print of a Henri Rousseau painting isn't working. I was going to add a bar cart in a nod to the mid=century modern style and after seeing one of your other videos I, fortunately, nixed the idea. Of course, I know If I used it and it was practical, okay -- but I'm a Guinness girl!

You have nailed the elements in combining styles! What we enjoy and the design styles we lean toward and include in our homes is about commonality. The triad of color, patterns and texture are enhanced by the 20% examples you've mentioned. Good video!

My house is about 60% mid-century modern and 40% Japanese zen, although my garden is about 80% Japanese zen and 20% food production. I like the clean lines of my furniture. I have a tansu step chest in my back bedroom that I just decided to move next to my bed. I measured, and it will fit. That room also has a blocky wardrobe which I will refinish to Japanese zen bringing me up to 80% Japanese zen and 20% mid-century modern. How easy is that! The 80-20 guideline is helpful, thank you. Also helped that I dismantled 2 spindly etageres this week to give away. Came with the house and should have been gone long ago. I don't know what style that is, but not mine!

I think that the 80/20 rule sounds about right! Our home is probably 80% Scandinavian mid century (literally, I live in Sweden and have mostly Danish 50’s and 60’s pieces, lots of teak) and 20% boho (jewel colours, LOTS of plants in terracotta pots, mixed and matched patterns and textures on fabrics, rattan and woven baskets/decor pieces...) and I get compliments on it all the time. It’s taken me years and years to find our style (I haven’t got a natural talent for it AT ALL 😅) but I’m proud of the space I’ve created.

Very helpful video! Thanks Nick. My fiancé seems to gravitate towards mid century modern and industrial and I’m more about a mix of neutral boho/Scandi/modern farmhouse general vibe with a little glam and just a touch of mid century modern and/or industrial. I know that sounds really confusing, but I’m doing my best to find those Venn diagram moments so we are both happy. My main struggle is with our color palettes clashing a bit. I find as I get older (I’m 51), I gravitate to warm, soft, neutrals. I’m talking taupe, caramel, soft greys, cream & whites with touches of a peachy blush or a warmer soft lighter mauve and for metals, gold or aged brass. He’s always loved color combos like orange and hunters or olive green, mustard yellow and aubergine, cognac and grey & black, but also, some primary colors- which I avoid. So I’m trying to find the happy middle ground, we agree on the rich browns, black and grey, that’s what I mean by Venn diagram moments. It’s not easy, but I believe one of these days we will both be ok with our space- maybe neither one of us in love with it, but relaxed within our mutual compromises. 🙌🏻🤣 It’s especially tricky for us because my fiancé is also a professional artist and very much visual. I’m all about that relaxing comforting vibe, and he’s ok with a lot more color than I am. Tricky - but like any other aspect of a relationship, it’s all about that compromise. 🙌🏻

Love the 80/20 rule. My style--or to be more accurate, the style I WANT to have in real life instead of just in my Pinterest boards-- is not something I have seen very much, which is minimalism + neoclassicism. John Pawson meets Robert Adam. The closest I've come to it is what might be called "contemporary Parisian apartment"--those grand old apartments with high ceilings, moldings, chevron floors, chandeliers, huge gilt mirrors, and fancy fireplace mantels but updated with contemporary furnishings, lighting and art. The drawback is that I don't live in Paris. lol I will probably end up buying a small cookie-cutter condo in a 1960s modernist building here in Houston. But, again, love your 80/20 rule so I'm thinking if I go with 80% minimalism with 20% neoclassical elements, I can create an unique and interesting yet still comfortable space.

I do love the little slice of Paris in Houston though! I've never been to Houston, but I think that would be pretty cool and unique! Of course I usually am a believer in the architecture to work with the design, but you also have to find what works for you! Good luck Gregg!
