JC it doesn't seem to matter how many times I've seen you do this it never gets old. As you know I have picked up a lot of these techniques from you in the past but I know there's still so much to learn and improve on. I think this will make a great series of videos especially if I'm in one lol. Seriously good job fella

Hi John, This video could not have come at a better time for me. I have been turning for nearly 2 years and have never coloured any of my work, too apprehensive if I'm honest of ruining the piece, but your video was so well presented I will give this a go. No disrespect to MG Makes, whose video I watched the other day, and enjoyed on colouring, but your video explained it in ABC format for the absolute beginner in colouring, ME! Interesting series John. Really enjoy seeing all the processes and different explanations. One little tip on the drying. If you don't have a hair dryer then using the air line will also really speed up drying time.

I like the way you don't just 'slap the colour on - job done', but as well as the technical side of applying the coats, there is actual a lot of room for artistic input. I'm guessing in this episode you put on the laquer to quickly show off the finish and maybe in future episodes you'll explain a few different finishes? Another great vidio, thanks for sharing John 👍

Thanks Gordon. That is exactly right. Colouring is all about applying an artistic element. You look at what is there and build on it. Yes the lacquer was just a quick finish. I hadn't thought about different finishes. Maybe I'll do a video on that too

Good choice for a mini series John, looking forward to the next one. My problem is I'm not colour blind but rather colour ignorant, that is to say I have no idea what colours go together or compliment each other 🥺

I don't do dyes any more because of the fading. I use acrylics. Acrylics aren't anywhere near as messy either.

I tried applying some Chestnut stain to a Pine turned box and it looked horrendous. The softer grain between the rings soaked up all the colour, and the rings not so much. I take it Pine is not a good use case?

Pine is not a great wood for working with. However, you could use this to your advantage and let the rings soak up a colour and then apply some oil. When done sand back and you could get an interesting effect.

Hi Have you tried using watered down inks as a background I have found that using a watered down black will enhance any grain in the wood and make it more prominent .
