    After using and grading both 10bit videos, I was surprised how well 8bit videos handle color adjustments. 8bit shows its limitations when using the chroma key, but bad color management or h264 codec are the real problem rather than the color depth itself. Transcoding makes things better. When grading the whole screen and not masking or keying(like only applying luts), I would gladly use 8bit footage.

    Anyone can grade clips from higher end cameras like Reds, Arris, etc because there's just so much to work with...but this, what you did here, is the real stuff if genius! I'm almost turned off when I see people grading footage that's shot really well, and from great gear. If I'm someone who's invested in that kind of gear and budget, you can bet I kinda know what I'm doing with it. No beginner (a smart one) is starting with an Arri. So the actual interesting tutorials are ones like this where you can take difficult challenges like 8bit footage, or a poorly shot footage and use techniques to salvage/ correct footage. You can learn more with that kind of practice. Like training with ankle weights.

    Hey man, the final grade looks cool, but what's the idea behind not using CSTs? I don't see any advantages in working within the compressed space of rec.709. Wouldn't it be better to transform it into DaVinci Intermediate/WG at the beginning and then convert it to rec.709 at the end of the node tree? If there is an actual reason behind not using them, I would love to hear it.

  • @meliorstudios

    @meliorstudios

    Жыл бұрын

    The reason we’re using Rec-709a is simply because we’re using a Mac and so to get a matched export from the color grade you did in Davinci, you use rec709a. Most other inputs we used produce a different look after export, I.e. contrast and saturation levels change after exporting

Would you suggest I shoot in that profile or shoot in standard, as I have seen some videos saying a flat look reduces the quality of 8 bit footage making it harder for grading. Please help?

  • @captureinsidethesound

    @captureinsidethesound

    Honestly, use a profile that fits your scene and preference. For instance, if you have a scene where need the colors to pop then use a profile that's more saturated because it's better to have too much than too little. 8-bit is fine when you prepare and already know what you want the grade to be.

    Hey , i am watching your videos again and again, i just realized that for 8 bit footage ”Quazi” once said we should be so carefull about contrast so ( i experienced it is really destroying footage very easy) , so do you agree playinf little bit with ‘pivot’, might it be less arteffecfs and distorsions on the footage?

  • @meliorstudios

    @meliorstudios

    Жыл бұрын

    Hey man!! Yes definitely important to shift your pivot when altering contrast. Especially with 8 but. If you’re pushing too much contrast into the mid tones they can get noisy very fast with 8 bit footage. Alternatively if you move the pivot down too much to only affect the darkest areas, you’re gonna start getting a lot of chroma noise. For skin, we’d suggest shifting it down a little (or up if the shot is overexposed) till the skin looks clear. And the main thing is not adding too much contrast in initially like we did in this clip as you can add it in afterwards in your global adjustments

    Quick question - how come you didn't bother using a CST node given that you were grading 8-bit footage? Can I use a similar node structure to yours and apply a CST node right at the beginning to similar effect? Thanks!

  • @meliorstudios

    @meliorstudios

    Жыл бұрын

    The reason we didn’t use CST because when converting straight from Slog2 to rec.709, the image begins to break up and skin gets muddy. as we’re working with 8 bit footage and sometimes not perfectly exposed clips, that can be a problem and then you’ll spend more time trying to fix that initial balance than grading the actually clip, therefore, we just balance the image manually to begin with and we’re able to place the image in a good place for color separation which we do afterwards, I.e. the blacks are not crushed and there’s good separation in the skin, the video is not overly saturated and the white balance is not right. Can just get a little messy. Sorry for the long winded message but that’s the reason why. But we do use CST when converting to something like Arri log then applying a print film look afterwards

    I do recommend it but you have to ensure you don’t push the Colors too much because it’s 8 bit. Otherwise you will struggle to get good color separation

    Or you could just not film in S-LOG because you don't do that in 8-Bit

    The Sony A7iii is perfectly fine being shot in slog2. If you shoot with no profile you’ll struggle to color grade the image
