Excellent explanation. I like collecting Japanese maple seeds and of course they need to be cold stratified as well.

Yes! I've actually never tried to cold stratify Japanese maple seeds in the fridge, but I'd love to test it out! I usually wait until spring to collect the seeds so they've been stratified, but tend to have a very low success rate (maybe 1 out of 5 or 6 will actually germinate). Thanks so much for watching!

SUCCESS!!! I followed your previous video instructions...14 days in the fridge in a wet paper towel in a ziplock bag. Then 8 days with that ziplock bag taped to a south facing window. 100% success...5 purple cone flower, 5 english lavender, 5 red milkweed. I just planted the sprouting seeds in large terra cotta pots (18") outdoors (Kansas 6b). THANK YOU ANNA!!!! BTW, the seed packets from Seed Savers all recommended cold stratification for increased germination rates.

Yay awesome! So happy to read this! Thanks for sharing your success. I have seen SO much variation in the recommended cold stratification times for different plants, and to be honest I think a lot of varieties can just tolerate a big range in this aspect. Since we're a plant nursery I'm always trying to push the limits to stratify for as little time as possible. Feel free to use this guide for future cold stratification needs! brightlanegardens.com/how-long-to-cold-stratify-seeds/ Cheers to a happy garden this year!

Do you have a resource for stratification period length for different kinds of plants?

I do! I put together a list of some of the most common veggie, annual flower, and native plant seeds that require (or benefit from) a cold stratification period. View in the link here: brightlanegardens.com/how-long-to-cold-stratify-seeds/ Also, if you're focused on native seeds, Prairie Moon Nursery has an incredible website with excellent info on the seed varieties they sell (and they have SO many varieties). Wanted to also mention I have purchased a lot of seeds from them in the past and have had great success, so I do recommend that brand for purchasing as well!

why not just use the paper towel?

I have found with a lot of my native seeds the paper towel is too porous if the seed sprouts. The tiny roots get entangled into the fibers of the paper towel, but not in my coffee filter. So I usually use the coffee filter as that first layer.
