This is really awesome and very inspirational! There aren't many videos showing women building their homes. I want to do the same and have been studying for years, and it helps me to see women doing what I hope to do soon. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks! I got help for most of the physical building, but the project management is 100% mine. Let me know if you have any questions or have a topic you'd like to know more about.

This is really great! I absolutely love that there's so little fluff in the video. So many people don't think to write a script or think that they need to give a history of cob construction before talking about their own experiences. This is invaluable and I'm certainly subscribing for more stuff like it!

Thank you so much for this video. I’m planning my first cob home and the mistakes are the most valuable things you could have passed on. 😊. I will be building in Kenya and although the climate is different, on the plus side they have been building with natural materials forever. Thanks again.

Brave Lady... My experience with contractor's makes me mad even after twenty years. Men who sit in there trucks talking on their phones, lining up their next job while charging me fifty dollars an hour, and being told that that's how business is done... Not on my dime! Now my son's are grown and guess what they do for a living?

@@The_Jen_Reilly I totally understand I'm in limbo. Need $5000 for my own land. I'm not allowed to practice cob techniques where I rent as I'm not allowed to use the earth on the land unless I climb up into the jungle which I physically can't do. So I have to find simpler and cheap ways to do things.

Jen, great informational video. After getting your plans reviewed and approved, did they tell you that you must get every step approved? You say that you did the plumbing and it failed. Does every step require an inspector to check your work? I’m sure that adds a lot of $$, am I right?

Yes, for the most part they required ongoing/process inspections. Definitely electric, septic and plumbing. A lot of your needs will depend on your governing agencies. There are places with no code enforcement. My county has very homeowner-friendly code for everything except plumbing and electric, which are state supervised. The delays and re-inspections weren't terribly expensive. I basically discovered that if you're nice to "the man" and play by the rules, it's not awful. Ask informed questions so you don't overburden the clerks and inspectors. For me the biggest aha was to realize that the system is "mostly" in place to protect you and FUTURE homeowners. If you only think about your needs and capabilities to live with your construction, owners after you may not be informed or capable of what you find a funny little idiosyncrasy.

Seems the cost wasn't much of a concern for you. The idea behind cob is to have low cost housing. Mostly saving on DIY labour. Same time i guess for yhe house to be practical and lasting, the technicalities need to be catered to. Its a beautiful house Mashallah

That's one angle of why to build with cob. As an artist, I love the sculptural nature of the medium. The community of cobbers from around the world is amazing. I have made friends from every continent on this journey. I don't regret the house or its design. Sure, there are things I would do differently now, but it provided a learning experience that was different from what any other construction method could have provided.
