How to: CNC inlay Part 1 of 2 RASK

Tiny inlays for Rask Guitars, Part 1 of 2
This video will go over the setup and carving of 3 inlays from imitation mother of pearl and acrylic.
I am using a Maverick 3x5 from Legacy, and a .023" endmill from precise bits. I have tried a few new effects in the video, including letting the cut run in real-time in a pop-up window, rather than speeding up the video. Please let me know what you think of this method in the comments.
* Correction: The bits were $25 NOT $35.*
Short on time? watch at 1.5 or 2x speed (it's a little amusing).

Hi. Great video. Here in UK, I use hide glue to adhere the genuine MoP to spoil stock, take 0.1mm passes to cut my signature logo, then spray water on the MoP and gently blow heat gun over the Mop till the glue releases.

I want to do an guitar inlay just like you. I purchased Think and Tinkers PreciseBits(0.090 ). What should be the recommended Feed speed and depth of cut for milling process of Pearl Shell?

Check out my : "CNC cutting gold mother of pearl" short from last year. It has all of the settings that I used.

Instead of using such thin mother of pearl stock, use thicker stock for the letters, mill logo into the head stock, then mill the letters as a mirror image on a piece of not so thin ‘spoil’ stock, do not separate the letters from the spoil stock, just remove the thin spoil stock with the letters still attached, but epoxy the thin spoil stock with the letters still attached into the headstock and then mill off the top of the thin spoil stock. That way you don’t have to peel up the letters, only the surrounding waste mother of pearl. The letters can be thicker on the thicker mother of pearl, will be much more durable and still in the correct orientation without any fine manipulation. Just a thought, but could be altered some as you wish.

Sounds like a good idea. In this case , the customer supplied the stock. I had to work with what I was given.

Have you tired blue painter tape with super glue to hold your parts? Much less costly then double back tape.

Yes I have, and I like it. I use about 6 different hold down methods depending on what the project is. With as delicate as these were I decided to stick with the turners tape. Blue tape probably would have been less messy though. Thanks for the suggestion!

Would you be able to mill true MOP? Or is it too hard?

I have milled MOP with this bit, the cheap bits from Amazon will not cut it though. It is a very slow cut, but it can be done.

@@CustomCreativeCarvings I will +1 for the awesomeness of the PreciseBits Shell cutting bit for inlay. IMO, what you really need are these shallow-cut bits. The deep cut POS bits on Amazon/Wish/Alibaba deflect too much in the shell. Buy once, cry once with your CNC bits. BitsBits.com is another good source.

Thanks for the suggestion! That is a great idea, it reminds me of the trick to take emblems off of motorcycles with fishing line.

Yes, monofilament fishing line should be just as good as dental floss. I also read a comment about using “blue painters tape”. In lieu of expensive double-sided tape, create a similar solution using CA glue and blue painters tape (Note: This trick works in lieu of all hold-down clamps and screws to hold your workpiece to the spoilboard). Lay down a layer of blue painters tape to the spoilboard equal in size to the workpiece to be milled with the CNC. Apply a similar layer of blue painters tape to the underside of the entire workpiece surface. Now apply CA glue to the blue painters tape on the spoilboard, and spray accelerant on the workpiece blue painters tape. Align and press the workpiece firmly to the spoilboard and hold for a few seconds so the accelerant can cure the CA glue. Carve your item and pry the two apart when done. Easily remove the tape from both surfaces and do it again for the next piece. Hope this helps. Best - Michael

I've done painters tape and CA several times, I avoided it here because of the delecat nature of the carve. It is a great method for securing large pieces though.
