    I felt so overwhelmed by all the cloth diapering videos on YT, that is until I came across yours. Thanks so so much for this, you’ve certainly taken the sting and worry out of cloth diapering. I’m a 46 year old expectant mother, due in June 19’. Terrified but excited. Again thank you.

    I partially did elimination communication with my youngest daughter and she self potty-trained at 9 months. Out and about we used cloth diapers, but at home we put her in long T-shirts and she had a bare bottom most of the time. Studies have been done that show this reduces colic and diaper rash. And she was not colicky at all and had zero diaper rash. Instead of using wipes on her I washed her off every time she peed or pooped. She was a daytime poop-er so we stretched a bath towel over where she slept at night and changed it out when she got wet. She also slept on a daycare style tot cot inside a large play pen, which is completely rinse-able and can be wiped dry. When breastfeeding or cuddling I kept a hand towel under her butt in case she peed. There was a lot of cleaning up the floor but in my opinion it was actually easier than changing a diaper. We kept a bottle of vinegar and water and a stack of wash cloths on hand for just such occasions. We do own a Bissell little green upholstery and carpet cleaner for picking up after pets and there were times we had to use it. We tried to keep the sofa covered and she never went on the sofa. Practicing elimination communication drastically reduced our diaper and wipe cost. Grandma insisted on disposables when she baby sat so she did wear disposables and use wipes too and was not happy when she did. In all, I find elimination communication to be very effective at reducing colic, preventing diaper rash, and assisting in early potty training. We also did not own any diaper covers and were able to sense wet diaper's right away instead of waiting till she got fussy. Since many parents take months to potty train their kids I feel like I saved myself the hassle of having to retrain her by using the potty from the beginning.

    Cut up old cotton t shirts, old cotton hand towels also work well. All of my absorbency is repurposed. With 6 kawaii baby covers that I got on ebay for 10.99. And then I bought a micro fleece blanket at walmart for 2.88 and made half of it into liners to help with moisture wicking and the other half into wipes. So we spent less than 25$ for all of our diapering supplies.

    12 covers is far more than you need. I have never needed more than 6. I use 2 a day with 1 extra for unexpected soiling. That may be because I don’t use the pad fold - I always wrap in onto baby so soiling onto the cover is very rare.

    There's another great option for people who're on a budget. Kawaii Baby has a value pack and offers 6 diaper covers and 48 prefolds for i guess 69.90$. Their inserts and doublers are really affordable too.

  • @LBlincoe1

    We've been able to cloth for JUST over $100 using pockets and a few AIOs. For anyone who is turned off by the prefold/FST method, it can still be done! Alva's are a great bang for your buck and, if you look, you can get lucky with local stores also. We found our AIOs at a flea market. Brand new, never used, and I got 6 for $18. Our Alva's were a 6 pack (with 2 microfiber inserts) for $30. We got 3 sets (18 diapers- 36 inserts) for $90. So for $108 we have 24 diapers and with the pocket's lining, we have no need for liners. For our wipes we used flannel receiving blankets cut into wipey size. A 4 pack of blankets was $5 and each blanket have me 10 wipes; $5 for 40 wipes. We just use a laundry bag we already had, use grocery bags when we go out, so our grand total (for 36 diapers and 40 wipes) was $113! Initially when people see a cloth diaper like Bumgenius or Grovia they think cloth is too expensive to save money, but it absolutely CAN be done! $113 is really good for my son's entire life in diapers!

    I wish this video had been available 20 years ago! Having to scrape and scrub messy diapers is why I quit cloth diapers and never looked back. Using the disposable liner is absolute genius! BUT, that being said, I did learn a good trick......when hanging diapers to dry, aim a fan blowing at them on high. They will dry much more quickly and will be soft for baby's tender skin. Single layer birdseye cotton will be dry in a few minutes. This even works when they're hanging outside, just run a fan outside by them and set it blowing.

    @@honestytoafault I know this comment is late but for whoever ends up here and is wondering the same thing: the most expensive thing is the outer "shell" the commentator explained that she fell for the "cuteness" factor and this is how most people end up overspending. So it's not the same concept to equate the outer shells to "used underwear", they dont touch the baby's bottom and can save a lot of money buying used shells, and then yes make most of that money back :)

    Great video! I will say that 12 covers seems excessive in my opinion. With my first we were flat broke. I diapered her with thrifted receiving blankets and 4 hand-me-down covers. I was lucky and my local thrift store sold receiving blankets for 25¢ each. With my second child, I bought pocket diapers and HATED them. They never smelled clean, no matter my wash routine. Number 3 I went right back to flats, this time with flour sack towels, and love it. We now have 6 covers which is plenty.

    @@rochelle123ist please elaborate as to what is disgusting about cloth diapers? You do realize that disposable diapers take between 500-1000 years (at minimum) to break down, are filled with drying agents that often cause rashes and discomfort, and 1 child will contribute over 1.5 tonnes of diapers to a landfill... Right?! "Just throw it away" is a major problem. "Away" doesn't exist. It's a landfill, or the ocean. Cloth is reusable. You wash them. It's completely sanitary and better for baby's skin anyways. 🙄

    @@rochelle123ist Are you trying to be funny by harrassing others or are you a psychopath trying to prevent others from having children and you think that's normal? More likely you really don't see what you just did there, it was beyond rude, hateful, and I feel like I saw the lies that must have needed to come over you to get you to think and feel that way and let that so easily flow out of your mind. I am not blaming you. It's cultural propaganda that you just repeated without thought because it's how you have been taught. I am sure your culture trained you to respond like that but it's not okay to say someone else should change their body medically because you have been trained to think the world is not a better place with well loved and raised children. Honestly asking- Has your culture trained you this is okay and that the world is not a better place with large familes that love their kids? What media and public school teachings are brought to mind when you hear large familes? Honestly asking. Now is that reality? If I were you I would reject that culture and find a more loving and logical one. You literally tried to push medial on someone else. Humbly think about that, I am not trying to call you out but help you. You can change to a culture that does not force medical changes on others because "you" have been made to think you so want it, and we NEED it that way. Think for yourself, my large family was greener than just having one and using disposable and other cultural "norms" that are not more normal. Your not funny or helpful with the tube tie comment but it's not your fault. I mean that, I bet your a great person who cares but the word "care" got used against you. I hope you really start to think about how you thought it was normal to treat others as you just did and where else that might be happening and WHY. For years I overlooked comments like yours but that's not loving, I am sorry, loving is telling you your mistreating people and that's not okay. You didn't just say this to one person, you put it up there for all to read, okay, well they can read this too. This is actually bigger than this one comment. People have been made to think it's normal to bully others on what they should do medically do. Have you before or after this done that? Really pause and think about that. It's actually a common issue. A serious issue. 2020 showed me how many people fall for lies that make them fearful to do do others illogical and unsafe bidding. People really just do and don't think or search out a matter for real solutions, we fear, obey, and harras others that don't even if others have science and reason. This is an issue to adress so we all can untrain ourselves from cultural tendencies to medically harrassing others as trained. We have got to stop repeating propaganda lies that got us to think our opinion(that's actually repeating lies most of the time) is a healthy, helpful, or normal one. The Brown Shirts were not right just because EVERYONE in power told them they were the ones who cared and the other "side" didn't. We are all on the same side if we are on the side of truth and love. It really is as simple as that.

I cloth diapers my first two, but they were 10 and 7 (from my first marriage) when my third was born, so, literally the only things we still had left from their infancies was my breast pump and the ring sling I made myself. I got kawaii covers in hook and loop for $2 a piece. I got free travel wet bags when i bought alva covers. I also use a laundry basket at home. I do reccomend a sprayer though i tried liners and hate them and i tried going without a sprayer but that didn't work for me it was $25. Unfortunately i hate covers lol so they are now just my backup. Got my pockets on sale during the holiday season.

    Another $uper $ $aver cut up (and sew or not) old flannel sheets, Pj's etc. Our very low income (& California King bed sheets) inspired me to make 60 prefolds (personal preference) with a layer of toweling down ctr channel for my grandson. Covers were 10 for 20$ on Craigslist ]but might have resources like "Rebecca's closet" in your area that might be able to help as well if cost is a huge barrier. ] I also knit a bunch of soakers so we would have had to buy lanolin but rec'd as shower gift. As a person on disability it was such relief to spend $ on a better quality car seat etc than putting it all 'in the loo' ;DAlso bought pins, no snappi's in our area (less than 40mi)for 3$ and actual plastic pants on clearance 5$ total 6pairs size 12m-3T bc it can't hurt to have a little "blowout protection"Sorry I rambled! The paper towels will def come in handy once solid foods start, great tip!

    All 3 of my kids were cloth diapered. First one I switched to cloth at 19 months and had Bum Genius 2.0's (yeah, it was a long time ago!) and my set of 24 quickly dwindled to only 5 in just over a year. The elastic just couldn't hold up to the strenuous use, that's a risk you take when investing in these fancy pocket/AIO "one size" diapers, even with a large stash. Had to get more diapers for the second and chose prefolds (4 friggen sizes needed) and Proraps (a now defunct brand, needed 4 each of 6 different sizes). Used a MASSIVE bulk pack of baby wash cloths from Sam's Club for wipes, a cheap drawstring wet bag that I think was made by BumGenius, the second generation DiaperChamp pail, and the aquos diaper sprayer for those two. Got divorced, didn't expect to have anymore children, and everything except my breast pump and the ring sling I made myself had gotten handed down or donated. Then surprise, found love again and along comes baby #3 when my older two were 10 and 7. Had to get an ENTIRE new stash. I'm rather disillusioned by the gimmicks of modern cloth diapers. I wasted a lot of money on cloth diaper accoutrements that didn't REALLY make cloth diapering any easier or any less gross. Having gone more basic with each child, I found CDing got EASIER! So with my third I went TOTALLY old school and will never look back! With my third, I went to unbleached OsoCozy flats (6 dozen) with Snappis, super cheap upcycled wool soakers from eBay, Thirsties DuoWraps and Dappi Nylon Pull-On pants. Got a PlanetWise large wet bag (cuz they have sealed seams so no wicking which is important with flats/prefolds) and a crap ton of baby washcloths to use as wipes from a local independent dollar store that sells a 3 pack for a buck. Had A roll of bamboo flushable liners only to use as protection when using diaper creams, and actually still have a lot left! We splurged on the diaper pail. I knew this time around I wanted to do a wet pail so I searched for months to find a particular antique pail. I found a circa 1950's metal, step-open pail with an enameled metal bucket/liner that was intended to be used as a wet pail. A cheap, widely available option would be a large enameled pot with a lid, but its not as cute as my antique pail that just retired to be our bathroom rubbish bin. Plus it has this little container type thingy inside the lid for deodorizers if I had decided to switch to a dry pail. The wet pail has no stink like a dry pail. Or at least that was my experience, but I did the good ol' fashioned toilet dunking before the diapers went into the wet pail that sat next to the loo, so they were pretty clean before going into the pail in the first place. I found it much more effective and way less gross to dunk than to spray. The sprayer was never all that effective and the pressure of the water always caused spray-back. Nothing worse than getting splashed in the mouth or the eye by poopy water! EW! Not to mention the splashing every which way into the rest of your bathroom! But of course they've now got a new gimmick to fix that issue, too. I also never had much luck with the liners, they were completely pointless for my three babies when it came to the poo-purpose. In the end, I now have a big stash of TRULY one-size diapers, wonderful wool soakers, and an adorable diaper pail that will eventually get passed down to my first grandchild. First one to give me a grandbaby gets it! Lol! For my next one I only have to buy new waterproof covers (only had 3 DuoWraps in each size so they barely made it to the next size/potty training) and some more Snappis, Boingos, and pins! I think I spent about $400 total for my third ones stash, but $80 of that was on the fancy pail and everything except the DuoWraps, Snappis, and most of our pins are still around for the next baby! Heck, the diapers and wool soakers might even be able to make it to my first grandbaby as well!

    Dollar tree actually has a pack of 5 baby wash cloths and we did the same with the dollar tree baggies as a wet bag when we go out sometimes even though we do have a wet bag. As far as a pail liner, we found hanging bags that are grey and are typically used for putting a suit or dress in but we used that as a hanging pail liner in the laundry room as well as using them in little laundry baskets as actual pail liners.

    Great video and info! I have a couple questions. With the Viva liners... how do you dispose of them? Do you put the Viva towel on every time you put on a diaper? Do you recommend getting some snappis or is it fine without them? I'm looking to go bare minimum but also want it to work well. Thanks!

  • @alliemille

    @alliemille

    i wouldnt flush them! when baby poops throw them in the trash. i think some people put liners on when they know baby is going to poop and some people put liners on all the time. the liners (viva paper towels) are for after the baby starts solids. if baby is exclusively breast feeding, their poop is water soluble and can be put in the wash without rinsing. we just ordered diapers for our second baby and we did not order snappis. you can just pad fold the prefold or flat if that works for you. :) **this is my second child and i'm cloth diapering for the first time. so my answer is based on information i've learned from other mommies :)

    heathtanner64 I cloth diaper my 3mo, no snappis needed. we use a mix of pockets and prefold/cover. with the prefolds, I do it two ways: fold in thirds and just lay on the cover as I velcro it on or lay the prefold flat on the cover, put baby on, roll in the sides to the soaker, then fold up and around corner-to-corner, fold cover up and hold in place as I velcro the tabs onto the front. honestly, I much prefer my pockets. so much easier to put on baby because you can set them up beforehand. but you only need a few covers (I actually only have 1; I leapfrog it with the pockets) and prefolds take up less space and less laundry. I guess it just depends on what you are more strapped for, cash, time, or space.

    So would you use micro fleece with Viva on top?

  • @Visaviel

    @Visaviel

    5 жыл бұрын

    Brandon Shepherd I guess so, since wet poo will go through the microfleece pretty easily, whereas a liner will catch it better. If I had to pick just one it would be a liner and use an insert with better moisture wicking properties than cotton, like a blend with hemp or bamboo. Or a blend with microfiber inside or on the bottom. (I wouldn’t use a pure microfiber insert with just a liner on top in a cover because the liner could move and the microfiber could touch the skin, but you could use microfiber + microfleece + liner). Cotton FST is my favorite way - just have to change it more frequently because it feels wet. But cotton is a good tool to teach a baby about wetness for potty training. I believe a liner on top of cotton does keep the moisture off their skin at least a tiny bit. I love FST but I think investing in hemp, bamboo and microfiber or at least two of those is pretty much a must for various situations.

    Wash routine is: Pre wash: 1/2 cap calgon, line 1 or 2 of cap with Tide, 3 tablespoons of Borax and 3 Tablespoons of Washing Soda. Wash in cold water. Main wash: full cap of calgon, line 3 in cap of Tide and again, 3 tablespoons of washing soda and 3 tablespoons of borax. Then you can dry your diapers (not covers) and inserts on medium in dryer. Don't use any type of fabric softener or it will cause your diapers to repel urine causing leaks. Make sure not to stuff your diapers until cooled.

  • @thehowtosreviews

    +Dayna Fleischmann hey! microfiber is what you do not want to put next to baby's skin! many inserts are made of it because it is so absorbent but yes, it will hurt baby. Microfleece is different! It is the lining on any diaper that is dubbed "stay dry" and can be purchased at any fabric store, often used for blankets too! Many babies are sensitive to wet and thus need a barrier between the FST and skin! Hope that clarifies!

    You can put microfiber in a pocket as long as the microfiber doesn't touch baby's skin. Although using the towels plus microfiber might get bulky if the microfiber is thick. Usually pocket diapers already have microfleece that wicks away moisture from your baby, so the microfiber is unnecessary unless you have a heavy wetter or you're using it at night.
