How to Clip a Parrot's Wings: Easy Steps!

How-To Clip a Bird's Wings: Easy Steps!
There are different ways to clip a bird's wings. This video demonstrates how I personally clip my parrots, including my 3 Pacific Parrotlets.
Parrots are all unique - what works well for one bird and/or species may not work well for another. Always consult your qualified avian vet. Parrots should always be caged or harnessed when taken outside. No parrots were harmed in the making of this video.

Matt Maillet it’s ok if you bring them home clipped to let them get used to their surroundings but after that people should actually let the feathers grow back. Some people keep clipping the wings and the bird never gets a chance to fly.

It's a shame someone can't post with out others forcing their opinion of what's best on a person with negativity! SMH

Ha... Guess I have to teach some idiots here a lesson in the comment section. 1. A clipped parrot can still fly enough without going too far. 2. It doesn't hurt if a parrot is being clipped carefully. (It's like clipping your toe nails) 3. The reason for them being clipped is mostly for so that they can explore freely, in more open spaces (like your house) than being in a bird cage isolated for a long time. (Ironic) 4. It's a technique used too for new pet birds getting comfortable with their environment outside the cage, without panicky flying around, possibly hitting a transparent object and stressfully hurting or killing itself at the process. 5. To put it simple, clipping a bird is like a parent being strict to their child, by giving the child limits, or else the child might do something that'll be painful or worse. If you think a parent who wants to protect their child is cruel, then I pity your parents for having you :p Anyway, I hope this comment is always on top so that some concerned people be advised, I know not all everyone agrees with this kind of thing, but if you know what you're doing, then do it as long as they can still explore freely. (I recommend going to a vet to clip a parrot's wing if you're a beginner) 6. It's not bad if the bird is still comfortable and happy.

You have put up a good argument and I can see that in some striations clipping flight feathers may be the best option. I have a rescue parrot that once had its wing broken and when I got it it couldn't fly. It will never be able to. He is as happy as the other parrots he lives with. We have lots of ladders for him to get from the floor to the cages. He struggles to mate but apart from that happy. So clipping wings doesn't mean sad birds. :0)

Why do you clip a birds wings? Its animal abuse. They fly in nature miles every day. Flying is their natural instinct, they are birds. And you don’t know if it hurts them mentally. How would you feel if a bigger creature takes away your possibility to run? You guys are disgusting. If you can’t handle a bird, don’t buy a bird. I have seven cockatiels and none of them is clipped (here in Germany it is considered animal abuse). They fly and they are tame. They come on my finger and they fly on my shoulders if they want to. They are not getting forced to do it with taking away their flying instinct. To me that is pathetic. And besides that, you said you do it because you are being strict like being strict with a child? Lol would you make your child paraplegic to protect it from harm? omg that is so dumb unbelievable! Keep your house safe and train your birds. If you can’t do that, buy a dog or a hamster instead. But stop abusing birds just because your ego is happy.

@@orwellianpepe7660 Frist of all, amazing Job in demonizing the wing clipping situations and making people feel guilty even tho some people are just thinking abt their safety. Round of applause to you😀👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼. Do you want a medal for being so amazing with birds? Or a trophy? Second of all, while many do out of their own convenience, many also do it for their bird’s safety. My friend who didn’t like to clip got her cockatiel’s wings clipped because he flew into a window and got a concussion. In all seriousness, good for you that you have birds that are safe when flighted. But not every bird is like yours! I personally don’t like to clip but I understand why people do and I don’t go making ppl feel guilty for keeping their bird safe. Safety should *always* come first when thinking about any pet and if it really was the safest option then I don’t judge. I do apologize for my sarcasm at the beginning, it’s just not very fun seeing people make other ppl feel guilty for trying to do what’s best for their bird. Anyways, I hope you have a wonderful day.

You are responsible for not openning windows hiding dangerous things etc. Clipping the bird's wings is a lazy unresponsible way for owners to "keep their birds safe". Be a good owner for once. I have a 5 months old budgie. He's happy and hasn't been clipped once. I never needed to do this. On his 1st day he didn't fly very well and did slap somethings with his wings but he learned in an hour. He stopped slapping around and now he's a pro and knows what he is doing. Birds love flying. Let them be themselves.

@@skymango4558 Well in extreme cases however not for a general common pet scenario. Understand that it takes two, up to about six weeks for smaller birds to completely regenerate flight feathers, depending on length of clip. Study was taken, and assuming the credibility of the sources, 40 days of constant flight restraint was applied to the small birds which the study was being undertaken. The outcome was a considerable appearance of developing muscle atrophy in the birds, comparing the timeline between 40 days and (midpoint from estimate regenerative time for flight feathers) four weeks, 28 days, there would be time for the birds to be back to flying and preventing complete consequence of muscle atrophy. Also take in mind that while the feathers are regenerating, they may be able to use the lengthening feathers to continue to use their muscles, flying shorter distances for example. So there isn't a complete lack of muscle usage during their times of being clipped and by the time they have their feathers clipped next. Diseases and illness are definite consequence of severe restraint and neglect on the pets however unlikely from what the timeline of the study shows. Larger birds however have a harder time from the longer time of flight feather regeneration but in this context with the video that isn't the target case.

The procedure is also great for training and hand taming, and my cockatiel likes to stay on my hand now even when her wings aren’t clipped. I don't believe in clipping birds wings. But young birds/birds not trained, clipping the wings could be safer for training and trust. But they may have to. If they're roofs are tall and high, if there are nails sticking out of the walls. She did her research, like about blood feathers and where to cut. They're her birds, they were not hurt. And that is what matters (if the bird was harmed). Also bird feathers grow back.

i get all the responses that say this isn’t fair to the birds. i feel you, i really do. we don’t like to keep our birds in cages, they’re allowed free reign of the house. but there are some cases where this is necessary. right now, we have two rescue parrots that cannot stand eachother despite living together for years. one keeps to herself, but the other is aggressive and constantly flies right up to the other to attack her. until we can find a safer arrangement for them, the aggressive bird’s wings have to be clipped so they don’t hurt eachother. they are both otherwise happy and mischievous. there is no plucking, they play and explore and their behavior hasn’t changed. even when their wings aren’t clipped, our parrots prefer to walk/climb, i guess it’s because flying takes up more energy. It doesn’t hurt, feathers are like our fingernails and grow back after some time. as long as you take care of your birds and keep their minds busy, they won’t really care and find other ways to travel

Most people that clip do not have a genuine reason for clipping. There are rarely cases that clipping should be utilized, yours being one of them. Clipping still has many health consequences, and for a fully able bird, it can be the cause of severe muscle atrophy, fatty liver disease, and many other health problems. Her lovebirds don’t have any severe issue that would make sense for them to be clipped. Clipping is definitely an abusive practice that needs to stop, however that are RARE cases that it can be utilized. Her video, along with many other comments saying their birds can “bump into windows” and are “easier to tame” are the ones the comments are targeted towards. Since those people have no real reason for clipping that couldn’t be solved with proper training in a flighted bird. Please don’t take them to heart since your bird is blind.

For those who have birds, it's okay to disagree with this but yes some birds can fly into windows or constantly try to escape or anything else so just respect people's choices 🙏🏽 At least this person shows how to do it right and it's nice so people who want to do it won't hurt their bird

Except for some rare and for the most part temporary medical conditions, the simply is no justifyable reason to clip a birds wings. While it’s true that the procedure isn’t physically painful, it is still a most unpleasant experience for them - imagine someone you love inexplicably and forcibly rendering you a paraplegic, simply because you chew the tops of doors, or poo on their best sofa, or because they don’t think your liberty is worth the effort of being vigilant about open doors and windows? And it’s not the actual procedure so much as it’s effects that are catastrophic for companion birds. These beautiful but still very much wild creatures already sacrifice SO MUCH in order to live with us humans, it is height of selfish disregard for them to think, “this flying business is a bit inconvenient, let’s get rid of it”. Flying is why birds stopped being dinosaurs, it’s what birds do. Yes they can get from A to B by walking, just as we could, theoretically at least, crawl everywhere we needed to go - as in it would be tedious, painful and hugely frustrating but we could still get around? Well no, not really, so what gives me the right to transform my beautiful boy, who in the wild would have routinely covered >200 km on the wing everyday, into a cripple who can only awkwardly and nervously struggle to limp a few meters. And most parrots rarely walk on the ground. The like to be as high up as possible. This is because as prey animals the ground is not safe. So while a clipped bird might seem content when they’re in your company, all those hours when you’re at work or somewhere else, the bird is an anxious, stressed out and hyper vigilant mess, because he doesn’t know when that dog or that eagle is coming back, but when it does he knows HE HAS NO MEANS OF ESCAPING IT, how utterly terrifying that must be, it’s no wonder so many of these mutilated birds are also feather pluckers, biters or have other behaviour problems (what a misnomer, it’s the owners with the behaviour problem, the bird’s “behaviours” are more accurately described as being symptomatic of trauma and abuse). And then there’s all the physical problems wing clipping causes. For the most part a bird’s wing serve no other function but flying, otherwise they’re just extra food for predators. Their entire being assumes flight will be happening and functions accordingly, ie their muscular, digestive, skeletal, neurological , and I can’t remember what other systems are all calibrated towards regular flight, remove this and things go pear shape, for example obese , unhealthy birds (It takes a lot of energy to fly)...Wing clipping, IMO, shouldn’t be framed in terms of “people’s choice”, rather animal abuse stemming from a lack of knowledge and /or a lack of consideration. It needs to go the way of tail docking and ear shaping in dogs and be outlawed, and for those who still insist on this barbaric practice should at the very least refrain from hacking off their birds carefully preened feather with a pair of scissors and HAVE IT DOME BY A QUALIFIED AVIAN VET.

Clipping a birds wings doesn’t hurt them, it’s only a few feathers and it’ll grow back! The reason why this is helpful is when you first get a budgie. If the budgie can fly and it doesn’t trust you yet, it can fly into a wall or a mirror, and can get severely injured. Clipping a birds wings doesn’t hurt them at all and they’ll grow back. So if you are worried that they won’t be able to fly again, they’ll fly again once the feathers grow back. The reason for clipping a budgies wing is just for their safety. If you do get one you should consider getting one clipped or not clipped, but it’s ultimately your choice. (Make sure to get it done by a professional or be really careful though) Let me repeat this one more time, Clipping a birds wings is for the birds safety and they don’t get hurt and the feathers will grow back and they can fly.

Let me explain, friends. The little bird is not being hurt. The wings are clipped so she cannot fly very far. Her feathers will grow back. (Thats what the blood feathers are, the feathers growing back) 1. The little bird is not wild. She is used to being held and is not scared or being hurt. 2. Her wings being clipped prevents her from flying into windows or walls. Or getting lost and captured by cats or other animals. 3. She can still fly! Just not very far.. She can glide to the ground. She will not fall. (Glide means she spreads her wings and slowly moves to the ground, like a slow airplane.) When I was young I did not know the bird wasn't hurt when feathers got clipped. I never clipped them. My bird crashed into a wall almost every time she left the cage. She broke her wing. If I had been old enough to realize this, my bird would've had her wings clipped. She probably would have lived much longer than two years.

It doesn’t hurt the bird at all and for me it guarantees that if my bird gets outside he can’t fly very far. He would not last more then a few days on his own as I’m sure other birds would attack him. Inside the house it stops him from reaching certain heights but he can still fly. This is not cruel it’s a preference and a precaution owners take as their bird is domesticated and a family member. We have brown eagles that live near me in Australia and I’m sure my bird would be easy food if he got out.

Birds are naturaly "built" for flying. They need it to be mentaly and physically fit. I remember my little Kakariki which I bought from a store. She have never been outside the cage until i brought her home. I remember the time when she left the cage for the first time. She was totally inched after few circles around the room, she could not coordinate her flight, many times she badly landed on the floor, didn´t know what to do... Today she is like an acrobat. It´s soo breathtaking what she can do in the air! Don´t cut the birds wings! You are impoverishing not only your lovely bird but also yourself!

A little late but let me explain some stuff. 1. Clipping is necessary for domesticated birds, they'll fly into the wall or a window and injure themselves if they aren't clipped. Unless, of course you keep them in a cage 24/7. ( if you do, you shouldn't have a bird, they need to fly. ) 2. They can still fly with their wings clipped, just not as far, they glide to the ground or their perch. 3. It's not painful, it's pretty much like cutting hair, the bird doesn't feel the wings being clipped. If the bird starts acting like it's in pain, squawking, etc it's either A: It's scared ( birds may be scared the first time their wings are clipped since it's a new experience. ). Or, B: You've cut too much and hurt the bird, if that happens please get them to a vet as quick as you can to assess what happened and how severe it is. All of you posting hate comments need to chill, I'm willing to bet that 90% of the people posting hateful things don't even own birds. Just my input

Some of us who own birds, don't live in the appropriate climate all year around for some birds, if it's snowing outside and my bird gets loose it will die outside. I let my birds wings grow because I thought clipping them were cruel, they were already clipped by the pet store when I purchased them, they were born in a pet store they won't survive out in the wild where I live , so keeping there wings clipped to be on the safe side to me is better than them getting loose outside and dying. So I looked into how to clip them and that's y I'm here. I do let them outside when its warm but only in there cage. They were babies when I got them and I'm trying to train them but anyone with birds knows it takes a lot of time and patience because they have to trust you first.

Most of the people in this comment section complaining have never actually owned a domesticated parrot or bird. They need to be kept moderately grounded otherwise they’ll hurt themselves flying around and hitting the walls and furniture. Additionally, a unclipped bird can very easily fly out of the house the moment you open a window or door. And if that happens you have maybe a few days tops to find them otherwise they WILL die because very rarely are they capable of surviving on their own.

  • @ok-yz9fb

    @ok-yz9fb

    Ай бұрын

Or maybe rather than taking away their ability to use their wings, take the precautionary measures to prevent them from flying out in the first place by bird proofing the house from anything dangerous. When you put enough time and effort to take care of your parrot, you can help your bird become good flyers by training their wing muscles, you can definitely avoid clipping their wings. Stop trying to make excuses why clipping is right; only in a few very specific cases is clipping needed. I have 5 parrots and one is 29 years old and at first she was a bad flyer with weak muscles, but with enough training she was able to build her wing muscles and is a well flyer. Don’t get bird if you can’t take care of them.

@@ok-yz9fb What precautionary measure is gonna keep the bird from flying into the walls of your house other than removing the entire house thus giving them unlimited ways to fly out? No amount of keeping all your doors & windows shut or clearing the space out is gonna make them any less susceptible to them hurting themselves when they fly into a wall. You can certainly help them fly better & safer but that’s not gonna change the fact that most birds don’t have wings suited for flying in confined spaces. You can’t always train them to do something that is unnatural for them. Unless you have the money to afford a bird friendly enclosure that enables them to fly around aimlessly without harm you aren’t gonna protect them in any way other than clipping their wings. Either that or you keep them in their cage which I personally believe to be more cruel as I’d love to at least give them the freedom to glide around in more open spaces to relieve any stress they may have.

@@johnskeeeee you can definitely train bird to navigate through the walls of a house. If that’s what they’re familiar with, they are not constantly flying into walls. Some of my parrots are not fond of flying, so you know what they do? They don’t fly! Just because they are not great fliers does not mean they are constantly flying into walls - they just choose not to or only fly small distances. I don’t feel a need nor have a never felt a need to cut their wings. I have had parrots for a long time, and I never cut their wings and lo and behold they did completely fine without their wings needing to be cut. While you might see it as a way to prevent themselves from being hurt, it is depressing and just frustrating for parrots when you take away their main form of mobility, let them decide for themselves and be patient when training them to fly, then they will not hit walls constantly.

@@ok-yz9fb This sounds like an overgeneralization of birds based on your own experience with birds who individually just happened to have no desire to fly in the first place. Sure, it happens but so does having a bird who wants to fly everywhere & anywhere nonstop and can’t be trained out of it. Just like many dogs can’t be trained out of not running away when outside & off a leash. And while you can certainly train a bird to better navigate around the house that doesn’t eliminate the danger of them flying into a wall if they’re not careful. Especially when they get the zoomies. Just being a human running around in a house is already hazardous but for some reason you think it’s any less hazardous for an animal that can fly over 30mph but with a significantly weaker for dealing with impact to fly around in a house. Train a kid to run safer in a house and tell me that’s even possible.

@@johnskeeeee I understand what you are trying to get at but you yourself over generalize birds stating they need to be “moderately grounded or they’ll hurt themselves”. While this is true for SOME, as I have said in specific cases clipping wings may be necessary, it’s not like birds are flying into walls every chance they get and hurting themselves constantly. While I may be overgeneralizing with my own experience, I cannot speak for others, my many years and training my parrots, I see that birds will not typically go flying into walls every chance they get. In fact, they are more likely to fly into walls if they’re scared of you / something, but when comfortable they will not fly crazily. If you wish to see, there are a plethora of examples online of people with birds who have unclipped wings and living happily with their owners and not flying into walls/ hurting themselves because they are comfortable. Even when they have “zoomies”, they are trained well to not hurt themselves. It is very possible to have a “ungrounded” bird who doesn’t hurt themselves. Birds are meant to be free and fly as they please!

I agree that being flighted is the best option but if push comes to shove and your bird is crashing too hard to the point it can severely injure himself/herself, it’s best to clip because he/she most likely can’t come out of their cage safely. And what’s better, a bird in its cage all day for it’s safety or roaming around the house clipped but free to walk around for its safety. Not the best options but I would choose the second option. Bird proofing your home isn’t 100% guaranteed no accidents will happen. My friend’s bird got a concussion in a bird proofed home. Please don’t say it’s cruelty. Clipping doesn’t only affect the muscles, it can also affect the birds mental health in bad ways such as developing a phobia of flying even if the wings are not clipped all the time. I only recommend clipping if your bird is ill ( blind, heart disease etc). Clipping can also make your bird lose their trust in you which will result in aggressive behaviors if upset. In my opinion, clipping a birds wings is the equivalent of a human with chopped off arms and legs. Once again, this is not to send hate and just to inform you of other problems. I sincerely apologize if you got offended or upset.

Because of this he got a concussion and despite being against wing clipping, she decided it would be the safest option until he got used to things in the house. One the feathers grow back she’s leaving him flighted. Wing clipping isn’t as “cruel” as it’s made out to be if it’s for the bird’s safety. It is *only* acceptable for that reason. Not for taming or training, simply for their safety. Please keep an open mind on the subject and please don’t demonize people who have their birds wings clipped. Most of them really are just thinking about their birds safety. Have a wonderful day! :D

Guys don't worry The primary reason to clip your birds wings is to ensure that it doesn't fly away. By trimming the birds primary feathers ,known as "flight feathers " they cannot take flight. This prevents them from accidentally flying out an open door or window, which can be dangerous for a domesticated bird.

If you never let your birds fly, they will never learn to either. They really need that exercise to stay healthy, as well.

I understand where this idea comes from, that clipping a bird will mean they won’t be able to fly. But unfortunately any clip may affect their flight but won’t stop them from flying, it only takes a spook or a gust of wind to take them away! A great way to safely give your bird time outside of the cage, is to bird proof your cage (much like you would baby proof a home!) and flight training so that they can easily coordinate themselves in the air and avoid bumping into the things clipping claims to stop. Unfortunately accidents are more likely to happen when a bird is clipped and cannot easily get themselves out of danger, a clipped bird that escapes is not going to know how to fly down from a tree and have a harder time escaping predators, a clipped bird is more prone to feather plucking and self mutilation as a result of discomfort and stress, clipping affects how much energy they burn, clipping makes them prone to muscle atrophy as a result of not using the muscles they’re supposed to be using. Clipping is not going to keep safe, it is not going to prevent them from escaping, it is not going to allow you to safely take them outside, it is going to negatively affect both their mental and physical health doing things that can be worked on through training as a healthier alternative. A fully flighted and trained bird will know how to coordinate a house, is going to know how to fly down from a tree, is going to be happier, is going to burn off energy through what they’re built to do and just be so much happier, consider flight training your bird instead and you will see better results :)

Holy crap, the amount of hate. I know posting an informative comment on youtube is quite often useless, but I'm going in anyways. Clipping is not inherently wrong. Clipping does not always prevent birds from flying. If lightly clipped, a bird can often still fly, or glide around. They just wont be able to get up the velocity to do light-speed laps around the room. This is great for keeping the bird safe, as flying into walls, windows, etc. can really hurt them. You'd think every bird would naturally be an A+ flyer, but this just isn't the case. Some of them really, really suck at flying, in this case clipping is doing the bird a help, as flying into things can break beaks, feathers, little legs, and worse. Clipping can also be used for behavioral purposes. I can't really speak too much on this, as each situation (and bird!) is different. A clipped bird can be less aggressive. While a flying bird might be a happy bird, the happiest bird is one that gets lots of out-of-cage time, and socialization! Preventing aggressive behaviour, and reducing the risk that the bird might injure themselves while flying, can mean a lot more attention and out-of-cage time, and this is arguably the most important thing for the birds health. As long as bird has a place they can go to feel safe, and an owner who understands, and is considerate of their body language/needs, the little one will be perfectly happy, flighted or not. Sometimes all the training in the world just can't curb the aggression (commonly related to hormones, the bird having been mishandled in the past, or the bird just plain being a grump), and as a last resort, clipping can sometimes address this. Clipping is temporary! When the bird begins a moult (it varies between species, but most commonly happens 1-2 times a year) it will regrow the snipped flight feathers. Some people choose to clip their birds during hormonal periods (puberty, mating season), and let the feathers regrow once that time has passed. It also doesn't hurt the bird, thank goodness! This is coming from someone who will do everything possible to keep their bird fully flighted, but understands that for some birds, clipping is a harmless, non-permanent way to keep them safe and happy.

How would you like it if a bird chopped for your feet and caused you to not move around as much? You can teach free flight and/or get a bird flying cable or you can net your backyard and put screens on your windows. How exactly do you know that they are happy. God made birds a flying creature and there are so many animals that don't fly so instead of taking away a unique animal's ability to fly get a ground dwelling animal and not a bird...stop acting like you know exactly what a birds feelings are. You are such a conversationalist.

@@tierneyellis1308 Couple of crucial differences there. 1: Feet don't grow back, flight feathers do 2. Cutting off feet causes physical pain, clipping wings causes no pain. I don't think you read my comment, I clearly stated that I keep my bird fully flighted, but wanted to address this notion that clipping is somehow the worst thing in the world for a bird. Free flight outside can be very dangerous, if the bird flies away (and yes, even the most well-trained, strongly-bonded bird can get spooked and fly away) it's not likely to survive, due to predators, weather conditions, inadequate food supply, etc. But a screened in porch, or a flying cable are wonderful options for those who have them! You didn't really address the safety issue, so I'll assume debating this is a moot point. Also, conversationalist is a compliment, so uh, thank you?

@@schrodingercat7608 Conventionalism is the philosophical attitude that fundamental principles of a certain kind are grounded on (explicit or implicit) agreements in society, rather than on external reality. So it isn't necessarily a compliment depending on the context I'm using and The safety part you should always fly your bird in a safe place to fly and you should teach recall training. And my point of cutting off your feet analogy was that it disables them for a while and maybe it does hurt the because we don't know that it does or doesn't hurt them. I honestly think that it is wrong and you shouldn't leave your bird by itself at home, let it round the house near open windows or fans that are turned on, or leave it in a cage which will cause the bird to have anxiety and will want to fly away and never come back. Also you can put a piece of paper on windows and mirrors and the bird will know not to fly into it they are intelligent. Ever wonder what the bird cutouts on windows of buildings are for? It's so the birds don't smash into the windows and die...

My original comment was to dispel some of the misinformation around clipping (for example: we do know that it doesn't hurt them, as fully grown feathers have no nerves, and no blood supply. Blood feathers do, and of course these should never be clipped!). I really don't think I'm the person you need to be having this discussion with, I know all about windows and mirrors, and my own (unclipped, flying) bird is safe regarding both of them. Let's just agree to disagree. You believe clipping is 100% wrong, I believe it is sometimes helpful as a last resort.

I know they can glide and stuff but they fall down fast they have no time to glide. If you want a bird to be SAVE then: 1. DONT CLIP THE FLIGHT FEATHERS 2. cover up mirrors or only have one in a room where they never are or where they aren’t in daily. 3 Cover up the windows and close them 4. give it lots of free flight so it’s breast muscles are strong. If you cut a birds flight feathers they often can’t fly even after the recovery. Cause of the breast muscles not being used cause it can’t fly they will get very weak over time.

It's not fault if we clip our 'pet' bird's wings for their safety since they can't survive outside by themselves unless they're wild birds. It’s the same for these birds they are simply controlling a potential hazard and cutting down the risk of having the bird fly too high or hurt itself, as she has said before and many times, this is for people who want to take extra precautions, this doesn’t hurt the bird at all, and last of all of you don’t like this practice there is no need to right any hate comments. And the feathers grow back. It only makes it so that they can't fly as fast or as high. BUT Just got another bird, not wing clipped, he is yet scared of my place and humans, so he actually flied right into a window and fell, it all happened so quickly. Thankfully he's fine but I was so scared if he'd get hurt so i had to put cloths on all the mirrors and close the curtains for days. I am planning to make him get wing clipped for his safety, just for the first few months until he feels secured. People who just criticize the people trying their parrots to get wing clipped would not understand how it could be scary and dangerous for real. For those who just emphasize on birds' freedom of flying, well why don't you let your birds explore the sky instead of limiting them to stay home. You don't want it because they are "pets" and barely have abilities to survive outside. You want to keep them safe from lots of dangers outside. Wing clipping is the same thing, you do it because you want your birds to stay safe IN the house. p.s. I brought this another bird home because someone tried to abandon him. I am not keeping him because I just wanted another "pet". I still love him and want him to stay safe in this house.

They're also not very good at flying considering they're rescues and haven't done it much. So I do clip their wings for their safety. Now I also have a pineapple conure that I do not clip because he is trained. Libby Cain Wing clipping is scientifically proven to be mentally and physically damaging for birds. Clipping leads to learned helplessness, obesity, cardiovascular disease, mutilation, pododermatitis (bumble foot), OCD, muscle atrophy, aterosclerosis, and much more, as well as clipped birds being more susceptible to predation. Birds should NEVER be clipped for bonding or training purposes, and in pretty much all cases will make the bird much more terrified of people and cause it to loose self confidence. I have successfully tamed many fully flighted birds with no problems. I believe it is better to let the bird gain enough confidence to let them do it themselves, then clipping and essentially forcing them through the taming process.
