    The way I manage climbing is I remind myself I'm getting a good exercise, and the longer the climb, the longer the descent. I hate climbing, but at the same time I absolutely love it. I use the same mentality for ski touring.

    Some extra tips by my experience: 1. In long uphill drives that burn your leg's muscles, if you ride in a quite wide trail, try to make zig zag so to maximize distance over force on pedaling. 2. For clipless pedal users, try to push & pull for better cadence and adjust clip springs for easier unclipping just in case you'll need to put your feet quickly on the ground (f.e. in very steep, close to zero velocity points). Keep in mind that SPDs cleats SM-SH56 are way better for emergency unclipping than the standard -SH51. 3. If you 're not very fit, select a lower gear even if you have to pedal quicker than you expected. It's easier to change gearing from large to small sprockets when the climb gets more even. 4. If you ride with a friend, avoid jokes and everything that produce loughs, it will destroy your (already heavy) breathing!!! Cheers.

    My top tip: Change your attitude. Learn to love the uphills. Mountain biking is one of the few sports that offer the runner's high of a high-intensity endurance activity combined with the adrenaline rush of gravity action sport. That combo hormone rush is the best.

    You should work on adjusting your suspension settings, and then improve your pedaling skills. Modern MTB don't have much pedal bob when properly set-up and pedaled smoothly. Then, open your suspension. A supple suspension will keep the tires glued to the ground, so your climb will be smoother and your tires will have more grip.

    Never look at the top of the hill!! focus just ahead of the front tyre and let the earth roll on under you. You know whats coming up, its not coming up fast so don't look up. Looking up can be crippling as its all mental. Its like doing a super hard workout and just when you're totally f#@k'ed...someone yells out "half way there'.

    All well and good having a hardtail for climbing but any lumps and bumps on the climb interrupt leg movement and bounce you around compared to a short travel FS. I climb so much better on my FS than hardtail if it's even a little but rough 👍

  • @evanbarnes9984

    @evanbarnes9984

    Definitely a factor. I ride a hardtail now, and the power transfer is better, but the extra work you have to put in on rough trails can offset that. Still love my hardtail though.

    I am limited with a 10 speed ( 11/42) and planing on doing a bucket list climb for me latter in the summer which appears maybe to be more than 5000 feet of climbing . I have bought a 28 tooth chain ring to replace my 30 so that will give me an extra spin of he pedal . I am debating also getting and 11/46 cassette (10 speed ) but I will see how the 28 tooth goes and tht may do the job. My hardtail is a budget bike and investing in a 12 speed drive train doesnt seem economical and if I wanted to go that route I would just buy a new bike .

    Mountain biking has changed a great deal in the last 10 years... seems like back in the olden times we would have avoided wide boring double track like the plague. Think that’s why I don’t mind climbs, when possible I climb single track and it’s fun with some rock and tech ..... grinding up dirt roads is much better suited to my 19 pound gravel bike.

    Never mentioned tires. I have always used velociraptor tyres. Check those bad boys out, bit expensive, but well worth it, especially when cornering at high speeds. Check out my bike on my channel reviewing the hope lights. Also I also plan a route as I'm climbing the hill, trying not to look how far it is to the top. That can be demoralizing.

    Have you practice track stands and other low-speed balance drills? They help immensely for steep switchbacks. Also, make sure that your pedaling is smooth and even throughout the 360-degree pedal stroke.

    Run tubeless and experiment with lower pressures. Find the pressures that are right for the trails you ride. No need to change tire pressure for climbs or descents.

    This bike is easily the best MTB I've ridden so far kzread.infoUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Assembly was pretty self explanatory. To be fair though, I immediately swapped the derailleurs for some smoother Shimanos and thumb shifters instead of the stock twist shifters. The sheer size of this bike dwarfs most 26" bikes of the same class. I'm only 5'8" but I can sit comfortably with the saddle and suspension adjusted properly, even though my feet can just barely touch the ground. A small price to pay for such a beast. I love that Mongoose included TOOLLESS WHEELS, it makes transporting and techwork so much easier. The aluminum frame makes it so much lighter than I expected. In comparison, mine weighs only 2lbs more than the 24" my friend rides. I'm not the most in shape rider but even I can climb inclines like a breeze with this bike and it's massive wheels and 21 speeds.

    Gears can be smoothly changed while climbing. Simply reduce the pedaling force during the instant that you are pressing the shifter lever. Don't stop pedaling, just slow it down a wee bit for a wee fraction of a second.

    If you are 26 years old, you are way too old to be mountain biking. What are you even thinking? You should be married to a woman you met in Bible Study and have at least two kids by now. Hopefully, you are gaining fat at a pace that will guarantee that you have diabetes by the time you are 45. The money you save should be invested in the latest tech big screen TV and your time should be more fruitfully used by drinking beer while watching TV while ignoring the wife and kids. When you are 26 or older, you are too old to learn anything new, and you don't need to, anyway. You already know everything you need to know and there is no reason to be curious about anything. A 26-year-old mountain biker - how ludicrous!

    @@katsaras1 I'm 64 years old. I started getting serious about developing mountain biking skills a year-and-a-half ago. My skills and conditioning keep getting better. I recommend that you invest in a good, online, comprehensive MTB course - it will be much better than just watching KZread videos. I use Ryan Leech Connection. There are others and I imagine that some are just as good. I watch KZread videos to get different perspectives that supplement what I learn from the course.

    Im one of those rare bikers who actually enjoy climbs. I have a small speaker I mount in one of my bottle cages, turn on some music, and just set a pace. I have actually mathed out how much time I will spend descending based on how long/fast I am climbing. So yeah between music to keep a good rhythm and focus, and looking forward to the amount of time I will be rewarded with coming back down....I always climb with a smile....even if pushing occasionally lol
