How to Clean Your House after Panleukopenia or Calicivirus

Feline Panleukopenia (FPV) and Feline Calicivirus (FCV) are deadly viruses that can infect cats and kittens. They are also very hardy and difficult to kill in the home environment. What's worse, both are capable of surviving in your home for weeks and even years, laying in wait to infect the next kitten or vulnerable adult cat it comes in contact with.
As a foster, I've willingly taken kittens who have tested for both and am well versed in how to properly clean and disinfect everything in the home to prevent it from infecting the next litter.

thank you for this. i live on a farm and people drop off cats all the time and we have a number of farels in the woods also. over the past 9 months ive found 3 different litters of kittens. a group of 4, 3 and 2. so far this weeks Ive lost 3. we didn't know what was going on and couldn't get into the vet so today I took the forth one to the ER and he was confirmed to have distemper. we were in the process of getting them all fixed and vaccinated in groups. 3 last year 2 last month and 2 last week, but I guess it wasn't fast enough 😓 I don't even know how they got it, they've been inside cats since I found them around 8 months ago 😔 what sucks is the one who died last night and the who's sick now just got fixed and vaccinated last month 💔 Goldy, Crunchy, Beans and Munchie

Been I cat rescue for 11 years this year and I have never seen so many cats coming up with Pan or Calici. We do trapping and foster for 11 years and I have to say that the past 2 and a half years all the diseases are way worse then they ever have been. We took in 19 kittens from a trapping area we were only able to save 5, 16 of these had pan and 2 had calici we only managed to pull 2 through pan and the others that had calici, a lot of sleepless nights but so worth it when you look at their faces and seeing them play. It's a horrible job but at least you can try and save them. We have cleaned but after having pan we stop fostering for a year, and we clean everyday with the strongest things we have always used that always give signs of working. Thanks for the video you're awesome!! ❤❤

Thank you for this, I just had a kitten pass from distemper and am dreading having to clean everything and try to keep her littermates safe and all my strays. I don't know how I'm going to do this since we went to sleep wearing the clothes we had on when we were handling her so I have to find a way to clean my bed sheets but this was very informative, thank you.

Me too: I washed the bedsheets she was lying on, me watching her all night, packed it away as it was a painful reminder of my loss. Now I know I have to soak it in bleach and do all the wash-up of other items again. I scrubbed the spots where she had vomited , and where she lay to take her last breath., all with bleach but I think the ratio wasn't correct. I must re-do everything for the sake of the priceless souvenirs she left, her kittens. I wish I knew about this monster virus much earlier on.

If even the person narrating this tutorial is out of breath and sighing by the end of the video, I am having a hard time believing that any typical human being is able to endure such a daunting and exhausting task. I for one, don't have the mental fortitude to do it without paralysing in fear I've missed a spot or am doing something wrong. Might as well just move places. Also, my cat just died from panleuk he caught in the hospital, and I have been isolating and keeping my other cats at home in quarantine to this day in separate divisions. I have already given them food from bowls that were used in the infected cat, after a 75ºc wash in the dishwasher, because the internet said it was fine, only to find that there is no evidence to support this and that now my other cats are most likely infected. The amount of misinformation on the internet for such a deadly virus is so ridiculous and unnerving, that even my vets are giving us conflicting information. How can someone even begin to have hope in saving cats when we don't know what ACTUALLY works? Disheartening.

There's a good chance the dishwasher washed away the virus instead of killing it. All the water and soap could simply scrub it away.

Hi, I am in the same situation as yourself, I had a kitten pass away from panleuk last week and I’m terrified my other kittens will have got it, do you have an update, are your other cats ok?

@@joelclayton8537Hi sorry about your kitten. Mine didn't catch it somehow. I'm pretty sure they drank from the same water fountain as the infected kitten, but maybe the viral load was minimal as he wasn't showing any symptoms or shedding (even though the Internet says it was already shedding). I locked them in my living room, waited a whole month religiously before giving them the shots, counted the days and the hours, almost slingshot feeding them and mixing vitamins, afraid I'd be carrying any trace of the FPV, checked every day for vomit or diarrhea, or even a slight apathy. I had to slip into sterilised clothes and gloves every day to clean their litter, it was a nightmare. Fortunately his two brothers and my two other female cats got the shots and reenforcements just as a precaution waited another 15 days or so before I could safely release them and be with them. All I can recommend is to have fortitude and discipline, mostly don't give up or give in, it is overwhelming at times and I hope it pays off as well🤞

@@seriouslyjamals thank you for the reply! Your cats are fortunate to have you as their owner, I am glad they’re all okay! I have disinfected every part of the house and washed all bedding clothes at a high temperature, so fingers crossed that has been sufficient, I’m moving my other kittens to another house where there’s no trace of panleukopenia until I’ve deep cleaned with some stronger stuff, I just hope they haven’t already contracted the virus 😢 It’s just shocking there is such a scarcity of info out there on panleuk.. Thanks for the reply again really appreciate it !

Accelerated hydrogen peroxide is not available where i live. Is 6% hydrogen peroxide will also work??also dettol is used here the most. Does it kill the fpv? My 6 month old kitten just passed away from virus within 3 days of showing symptoms. I cant cope with the grief while i need to disinfect the house

Would love to know this too. My guess is steam though may be the best option. I’m literally about to buy a new washer with steam settings because one of my kitties just got calicivirus. I have 5 and I just am looking up everything I can trying to figure out how to best rid our home of this awful awful thing!

My question too. It is a pretty pink bed covet that she liked tremendously. That was her favorite , and now it's an object of torture to view. Now I have to take it out of the package and stain it all over with bleach
