How to clean your Eyepieces - a step by step tutorial

Ғылым және технология

This is a short step by step tutorial about how to clean eyepieces. The more you use your equipment the more dust, grease, skin flakes, hair and other particles collect on the surfaces of the EP, telescope or telescope accessories. Even if you are extra careful you won't be able to avoid the lenses getting dirty with time.
So cleaning them becomes a must.

    The only problem I have is when you touch the q-tip with you're hands, big no no, oil from your fingers will make it harder to clean. Its also a good Idea to strain your fluid using a coffee filter, removes any impurities . Wear gloves !!!

  • @BogdanDamian

    @mark stump Thank you for your input! By dipping the q-tip in alcool after touching the cotton, all the grease and oils will get disolved. However, I agree, using gloves and straining the cleaning fluid will make the cleaning process safer.

    @@BogdanDamian A better idea is to use ROR, (Residue Oil Remover), from the bottle and only use ONE DROP of solution onto the Q-Tip. By dipping the Q-Tip into the lid like that, it is drenched. When drenched like that, some liquid can "seep" into the sides possibly going down into the sides of the lenses, which isn't what you want.

    I find that under normal lighting conditions, after cleaning my eyepieces they look extremely clean, much cleaner than before, but If i shine a flashlight right onto the lens there seems to be an ever so thin smudge in some places and no amount of cleaning can remove all of this. Am I just being too picky? am I just OCD? or should cleaning eyepieces bring them back to the perfect state of when you just bought it. THIS IS EATING AWAY AT MY BRAIN

  • @BogdanDamian

    @OMaMaRMY It is very well possible that some residue from the cleaning solution remain after cleaning. This is could be something coming from the cleaning cloth as well, probably just skin oils. But, if it you can't get rid of it in 1-2 passes and it isn't visible under normal lighting conditions, don't worry to much. Chances are that it won't affect the image in any visible way. Certainly, don't go overboard with the "cleaning". It might damage the lens.

    It seems to be counterproductive to touch the cleaning Q-Tip with one's hands while flattening it or drawing out some of the fibers. This can be done with gloved hands, cleaned pliers, say a multi-tool kept clean and wrapped in the kit taken to the field, or simply use clean tweezers which would be lighter.

  • @BogdanDamian

    @BogdanDamian

    @Ollie I follow the same steps for the bottom lens of the eyepiece as for the top one. The most important two things to watch out for are: - don't leave any grains or solid debris behind that can't scratch the lens when using a q-tip or cleaning cloth - don't use to much cleaning solution as it might sip in between the lens of the eyepiece

    @@BogdanDamian basically I would ike to know something. I'm not all too clued up on telescopes and I got a Meade Polaris 130 and the bog standard eyepieces that come with it 1.25" MA (26mm, 9mm & 6.3mm). When I try to view Jupiter, it's just a splodge of light with its moons and Saturn is a smudge as well. So my question is, which eyepiece can I use to get a much clearer picture on both Jupiter, Saturn and the likes. My eyepieces just doesn't cut it.

  • @BogdanDamian

    @BogdanDamian

    2 жыл бұрын

    @Ollie Ask all the questions you have and I will try to answer them the best I can 🙂 Your Meade Polaris 130 is a Newtonian telescope with 130mm of aperture and 650mm of focal length (FL). Using your most powerful eyepiece (EP), the 6.3mm one, you get a magnification of 650/6.3=103x. With this magnification you won't be able to see much details on Jupiter or Saturn. It's simply to low. I would recommend getting a decent 2x Barlow lens. Something like this: www.astronomics.com/2x-barlow-for-1-25-eyepieces.html?___SID=U It will serve you well decades to come even after you upgrade all the other EPs. With a 2x Barlow the FL of your telescope increases to 2x650=1300. The resulting magnification when using the 6.3m EP would then be 206x. At this magnification you should be able to see some detail on Jupiter and Saturn. I you already have a barlow lens, then you could get a decent EP (from Explore Scientific or Omegon) with a FL of 3mm or 4mm to obtain roughly the same results. Just keep in mind that the maximum theoretical magnification of your telescope is 260x and you shouldn't go past that. But before you buy anything check if your telescope is properly collimated as this can have a big impact on the views through the telescope. I case you don't have a laser collimator, you could get one here: www.amazon.com/Telescope-Collimator-Bysameyee-Calibrator-Collimation/dp/B07J5WBG4K/ref=sr_1_6 I hope this helps.

    @@BogdanDamian thanks that's helped a lot. I'm still trying to learn about how FLs and all that stuff works. I'll look into getting a decent 3mm EP and then a collimator down the road. Do you polar align your scope everytime you use it? My scope came with a 2x Barlow, but is it possible to get a much better 2x barlow? I thought all 2xs did the same job? Thank you so much for your help, I really appreciate it and you've got a new subscriber in me.

    Bogdan I love your vids!!! I need your help!! I have around 500 euro (3000 ron) and wish to buy my first scope! All I want to do is eye viewing, no photography. I have the binoculars that you reviewed and a friend just borrowed me a cheap refractor 70mm/700 SkyWatcher and I just fell in love with sky seeing, saw Saturn and it's rings :O! Should I buy a 127/1500or1900 Mak or go for a second hand EvoStar ED-APO 80 refractor? Aiming for simple planetary viewing and easy "travel-ability" ex. car trunk space :D. If you have any friends selling something similar in Romania let me know!

  • @BogdanDamian

    @BogdanDamian

    2 жыл бұрын

    @Doctor McLovin Salut! If you are mainly interested in planetary observations, then definitely go with a Mak or SCT (Schmidt Cassegrain). The 127mm SkyMax from Skywatcher would be a very good choice here. It's easy to transport and it will offer you some of the best views of the planets possible. Brighter DSOs will also look great. If you are looking at second hand telescopes as well, then look for a bigger Mak or SCT (6"/150mm). An APO refractor really makes sense if you intend on doing astrophotography with it. An 80mm APO won't be powerful enough for visual observations. Unfortunately I don't know anyone who is selling used telescopes right now. Clear skies!

    @@doctormclovin2634 ah yes. I mean, it’s “portable” (it disassembles into two pieces, too) but it’s not small. I don’t know how big is your car trunk, but it’s definitely “transportable” in most. What I can tell you is that for the price, you won’t find much better in terms of views. It’s a great all rounder, plus pound for pound you get more telescope from a Dobsonian since it’s a simpler design.

    Why do no videos show the how to clean the INSIDE glass at the bottom?

  • @BogdanDamian

    @BogdanDamian

    2 жыл бұрын

    @ rachar124 Cleaning the inside lens of an eyepiece can vary from eyepiece to eyepiece. This makes it difficult to generalize the process. But in theory in order to clean the inside lenses of an eyepiece you proceed just like in case of the top lens. If the eyepiece allows it, then unscrew the bottom part and expose the lens. First make sure, that the eyepiece doesn't have a special gas filling or that it doesn't have a watertight seal. In these cases you might damage the eyepiece by opening it. If this doesn't apply to your eyepiece, then simply follow the steps as for the top lens. Let me know if you have any specific questions about cleaning a certain eyepiece. Maybe I can help you.
