How to Clean Mold in Big Green Egg Grill

If you don't cook in your Big Green Egg every week chances are you've seen some mold develop. I don't do much grilling in the winter time and opened the lid for the first time in a long time and my green egg was filled with mold.
In this video I show you how to deal with the mold in big green egg!

    When you clean your egg, pull the interior pieces of ceramic out. They come out and you can clean the outside air ring.

    I don't typically have mold growing on those pieces, do you?

    No, but the bottom piece comes out and ash gets back there and prevents air flow.

    Yes, I live in a very humid environment. I've had mold before. If you close the lid and leave it closed, I will get moldy quickly.

    Not the lid, but the vents. I have to be very careful to come back to the grill after it's cooled down and open the vents at least a few hours or I'll have mold like that within a week.

    Personally I would like to say thank you for taking the time making this helpful video. I haven't had my BGE long enough to experience this issue but can make a mental note if the issue does arise.

    Any place that has relatively high humidity throughout the year is gonna have issue with mold with anything that even remotely seals up tightly if it doesn't get used for a while. The fix is easy, fill up fire ring about half way up, run it very hot 700F or so until all the coal burns up, let cool, remove the inner parts & brush off, it'll come off like a fine dust (including rust, but need to season cast iron grill afterwards) & damn near look new. Re-construct & it'll prob run better than it has in ages, because it's extremely clean. I do this once a year just to do it. It'll clean up all the air passages around the fire ring & air will flow through it like the waters of the great Mississippi. LOL. Now this sounds like allot, but it really isn't hard, the only part that takes much time is the burning & cool down.

    Good luck, you will probably have to replace the grate eventually.

    Leave your vents cracked open so air can circulate and mold won't be a problem. It only happens when you leave it sealed up in high humidity. When cleaning, use aluminum foil balled up to brush of the sides.

    Chris Walker part of the problem is the ceramic topper which I replaced in a later video. It allows air to escape out the top. I like your idea about the aluminum foil, I’m going to try that!

    Thanks for this. Hadn't used mine in 3 months and there was light mold today. Will vent it after using from now on.

    You failed to talk about cleaning the sides inside and the dome on in the inside. Would love to know what you used to clean that or is the excessive heat 600+ degrees enough to kill the mold?

    Just get a flexible putty, wallpaper stripper knife and grind a hole on the end which will scrape the bars 1” stainless steel knife cost a Buck or two that’s my Yanky talk,we only get about 30 days a year we’re it don’t rain in good old U.K. 🇬🇧 you will see what I mean trial and error

    I have been using a bge for 14 years. I have never need to clean mold or rust from it. You must not take care of stuff or you are really nasty.

    His egg should have never gotten in this disscusting state. He doesnt take care of his bge. keep it clean would be better device

    Its only a common problem for those who don't use it. Never ever seen my Egg in such a poor state. Never.

    Why not take the grate out and not risk damaging the egg it’s self. Never bang the sides of the inside of it that way. I’ve never seen one this dirty. Mine gets cleaned all of the time and I won’t let it get this dirty. Why so much ash in it. Clean it out more often.
