How To Step by Step

The leather jacket is the epitome of motorcycle gear. Few things are as cool, and few things are built to last as long. A good leather motorcycle jacket is an heirloom piece. It will last for generations -- if you take care of it. In this How to Clean and Maintain Your Leather Motorcycle Gear video, Spurgeon walks you through the best practices for keeping your leather jacket on the road for years to come.
How To Step by Step:
Step One: Find out if your interior is removable.
Step Two: Let your jacket's sweat wicking air out.
Step Three: Remove all internal armor, turn jacket inside out, and apply de-salter throughout the interior of the jacket.
Step Four: Find quality leather cleaner.
Step Five: Add a small amount of armor to a soft cotton rag.
Step Six: Apply cleaner to jacket.
Step Seven: Allow jacket to dry for 24 hours.
Step Eight: Apply leather conditioner to jacket's surface.
Step Nine: Allow conditioner to dry.
(Reminder) Do not over condition jacket
Step Ten: Enjoy!

I found that using rubber gloves gives you more leverage and coverage when rubbing in the conditioner and cleaner. It also saves on the amount of product you're using, because it doesn't soak into the gloves. Put the jacket on and rub it in using the gloves. When doing the back of the jacket, simply put the jacket on backwards. Give it a try.

A lot of professional car detailers and home cleaning/restoration people use Lysol for deodorizing. I learned that secret years ago and....it freaking works! Smelly sneakers? Hit them with Lysol. Smelly car vents? Don't pay for those expensive deodorizing kits. One can of Lysol will do it! (Search KZread for some How To vids) Old, smelly leathers or work gear? Shoot the inside with Lysol. It deodorizes and kills mold/mildew, etc. Seriously! Try it for yourself. I typically go with Lemon Breeze scent. If you don't want any scent, don't worry. It typically fades after a week or so and you can't smell it any more.

@@Anthony-du5uf No I didn't use it for the interior. But turns out a lot of the "dirt" that was coming off wasn't just dirt, it was a brown/tinted protectant that was on the leather from the factory. It removed a lot of the gloss that I liked on the original finish from the jacket. So I would NOT use the leather cleaner. I have purchased the Saphir brand (best polishes in the world, especially for shoes) - Canadian Oil from them. My motorcycle jacket was so crusty and dirty and sweaty one summer, I just wore it in the shower 😂 naked with nothing but the jacket. I soaped it up and scrubbed it. Then turned it inside out and did the same thing. 😂 By this time my wife walked in the bathroom and saw me naked with a inside out motorcycle jacket and a large brush. She was about as confused as it gets and just shook her head and said that’s not how you clean leather. I rinsed it off. Let it hang in the living room for a few days and when it dried out, I threw some leather softener I had for the couches. Worked great. That jacket smelled great after that. It stretched bad when soaked. But it shrank right back up when it dried. My old riding buddies still laugh at me for doing that. But admit that it worked. That axo Jacket saw many good riding nights and days after that.

I conditioned this big long leather coat that I've had for 15+ years for the first time ever. I used Mink Oil. It feels so damn soft now. The jacket itself wasn't worn much. It was always too big for me. I also conditioned 3 of my leather jackets for their first times ever also with Mink Oil. 2 of them I've had for 6 and 7 years. The 3rd one was a gift last year from a neighbor's friend. Hard to tell when it was conditioned last, if ever. It's from like 1981 or so.

I would suggest avoiding Mink oil, although it does soften the leather, it does this by penetrating it which causes it to break down over time. It is also known to cause leather to rot. A much safer option would be something like Obenaufs leather oil (for leather jackets) or Obenaufs Heavy Duty LP (for leather boots). I've used both and they work great on my Roland Sands jacket and leather boots.

Soap has high alkaline so I personally wouldn't use it. Darkens the leather over time as well. I'd honestly say that the best option is getting a product thats meant for riding gear, since we're out in the sun and moving quite agile. So the leather is under constant stress.

  • @RevZilla

+Mike Anoneemus Icon recommends Lexol for their leather jackets, so it would be safe for other standard finish leather jackets as well. Try mixing up 50/50 water and rubbing alcohol in a small bowl. Lightly dampen a lint-free cloth and wipe down the bags (including the insides if necessary). If there is visible mold or mildew, you can use a soft bristle brush with the water/alcohol mixture to lightly scrub affected areas in a circular motion. Then let the bags air out for at least a couple days. Once the odor goes away, use a leather conditioner. -DrewZilla

Like I mentioned in the video, you really only want to condition once a year. If you are rocking white leathers that need frequent attention you're going to want to stay away from a cleaner/conditioner combo for regular cleanings. If you're getting the leathers dirtier that what a regular spot cleaning with baby wipes can resolve, I would recommend using a standard cleaner for regular use and then a conditioner (or conditioner/cleaner) combo once a year.
