When I was 15 or 16 I spray painted the wheels on my dirt bike matte black. Since the tires were already black I figured masking wouldn’t matter and even if you could see the paint it would rub off quickly from the sand/mud and washing. My dad had the same bike and same tires. I was absolutely blown away that the paint soaked right into the tires and they stayed significantly darker black for the remainder of their life compared to my dad’s. In my later teens I had a set of tires on my car that always seemed to need scrubbing to get rid of the browning. I masked off my wheels and painted the tires with black spray paint again and from then on I rarely had to scrub the tires and they stayed looking brand new even without a dressing. Since I’ve experimented a little by spraying a light coat of silver paint onto a tire and trying to scrub it off after curing. It was very difficult. Even a red scotch pad made for auto body barely made a dent. I’m not saying everyone should spray paint their tires because some formulations may differ from the tires I used, but since then I’ve seen tire dressing as a big gimmick. The only one I see being close to paint would be renew blak as I’m pretty sure it is essentially paint. Surprisingly I actually don’t spray paint my tires anymore and occasionally use a tire dressing, but it’s more because I don’t care to bother painting my tires tan any other reason. Just thought I’d share my experience.

@@larrydavisj honestly, there's so many products on the market that it's just easier to pick one that works and that you like. Social medias embedded this message that product group A (brands you hear and read about mostly on KZread) is the end all be all and group B (the brands you see in Walmart and other big box stores) are inferior. Reality most of group B are decent and will get the job done. They're just not talked about because they may not be "prosumer grade" or "pro grade". I mix and match though, I use Gyeon/Car Pro/Adam's for soap and Adam's for tire and wheels.

Totally agree. No need to get crazy with tires. I use CarPro Retyre to clean, then CarPro Darkside as a long-term dressing and touch-up with CarPro Perl after a maintenance wash. I run 35” mud terrains on my Jeep. Hate to clean and dress those.

Two Products in my arsenal 1) Superior Dark Fury for general wheel & tire clean, but can be used also to spot preclean real dirty lower sections of car, also for bugs, 2) Superior Whitewall 1000 when tires are really bad with lots of browning.

Mineral spirits work great if dressing is caked on and every cleaner you tried including dedicated tire cleaners still dont work, those things are great for maintenance but actual dirt stripping down to bare rubber mineral spirits is probably the best.

In your opinion is there anything better than what active offers for pressure washers? I want to get the active 2.3 but was wondering if there’s something that performs better that isn’t just for car cleaning. Something that has both high GPM and PSI. Deck cleaning, siding, etc. and car cleaning. I’m not worried about paint damage since I’m very cautious with nozzle distance.

As an older guy that grew up with white wall tires, i have always used Bleche-Wite made by Black Magic (used to be Wesley's). It always provides great results. And i dont feel like for a daily driver that you need to be worried about being too agressive. If its driven often, the tire tread will wear out way before the tire dry rots.

So I just a got a new (used to me) car and I’m having a hell of a time to get the tires to stop browning. I’ve used super clean, full strength, then diluted 4:1, I’ve tried all clean. Multiple times. It’s not brown when I’m scrubbing the tires. It’s shows when it dries. I want to apply a coating to the tires but the brown keeps showing up. Any advice?

That is way too much contact with your paint, especially without water. Everytime, everytime you do any contact cleaning of your paint you scratch it. This is true for everybody, no matter how good they are or what they use. It just depends on the degree. You can minimize the scratches with technique, knowledge and product, but they still happen. You’d be better off doing a once a week water contact wash than what you’re currently doing. If you need to do something in between that time a contactless foam and rinse would also be better. Key is to minimize contact.
