Hi everyone join me as I show you the shut down procedure for an outdoor wood boiler! The machine is a vintage CL6048 classic outdoor wood boiler! This procedure may be different from machine to machine but this is how I do it for my model! Thanks for checking it out!

    A lot depends on the wood you burn and the temperature in the firebox, I'll admit I've never had outside boiler, but I've burned wood to heat my house for years and never had to clean the chimney or inside the firebox. I did check it every year before winter. If you burn uncured wood and/or burn at too low of temperature creosote will build up.

    Thanks for sharing your post season process Jay! I've never cleaned my 6048 that thoroughly in the 10 years I've been running it but I do scrape it once a week or so during the heating season focusing on scraping loose creosote off the walls and top. Floor of the firebox gets scraped down to bare metal and oiled after shutdown. I found that a floor scraper works much better than the hoe that came with the boiler. PS-don't forget to replace your door rope and service the damper solenoid.

    Like Bill said Fluid film would be great. I use it on my 2003 f250 and they have nice sprayers too. Would it be better to run all year ( I know you can not but I can and do for hot water) keeping it above 160 so no moisture and do your regular weekly , monthly simple clean and scrapes and ashtrol. Then shut it down and worry about letting moisture get behind any creosote? Just a thought.

  • @HomesteadJay

    @HomesteadJay

    With these machines no matter the time of year its suppose to be 170-180 for least amount of moisture chance. I choose not to run it year round as I like to stock pile wood and plus we spend so much time outside by the pool I wouldnt want me or guests to be smoked out haha since summer I dont burn the premium seasoned wood I burn the crap which smokes more hahah plus its nice to have a break from actively heating! Please subscribe to the channel as I am doing this years clean out this week! I actually have fluid film this time so funny your timing is perfect! Stay tuned!

    You dont have to clean it this way. This is the old school way. I am a bit OCD when it comes to this but normally you can just burn a whole bunch of cardboard and scrap the sides with long scrapers to get 75 percent of the creosote off. Problem is you cant really get the back and ceiling. Some people have units they never really fully "clean" like I do and seem to be ok. Dont be discouraged by this one video OWB's are (in my opinion) one of the better options depending on the heat demand/house size/etc... I made a pro and con video check it out on my page! Thank you!

    Definitely a good idea to have protections on everything! But a wood boiler usually uses about .4 amps at 120v. So less amps than an electric toothbrush. Also the pumps are usually internally protected and thermally protected. My boilers blower used a ton of amps because they still use 1800s era AC squirrel cage fans on em. I switched mine over to a pulse width modulated in-line DC fan and now it only uses 10 watts instead of 300

    When you have creosote build up (not running) it acts like an incubator for moisture. It is reccomended to clean off to steel and coat with oil right from central boiler. Now the normal steel is coated from the factory but after 13 years of use some spots are bare metal hence the oil! You can do what you like with your boiler but I like to give mine the best longevity possible.
