How to clean an electric kettle

Ғылым және технология

Here is a very inexpensive way to clean your dirty kettle. Always do things safely. Scalding water is very dangerous. Never leave the kettle unattended. Be extremely careful around electrical appliances.

I had no idea you could prevent the unit to turn off by leaving the top open! Gonna do this tomorrow morning to surprise my sister, it’s been all full of build up for too long to admit. I’m so ashamed.

Thanks for the comment. Just remember that it is designed to shut off once that flexed metal heats enough to pop the switch off. If you run the kettle too long without shutting off, it may warp or distort that metal or the plastic switch may distort or melt, etc. I'd say running it for about 1 minute with the lid up will be more than enough to clean the unit. If not, switch the kettle off for 30 seconds and then do another boil cycle for another minute and continue until you are happy with the cleanliness. Also, different communities have different water supplies and the buildup may be from various different substances. I think this process will clean anything that has built up but I cannot be 100% sure. Good luck

Here in Canada Limescale is also an issue but we are very fortunate to have these deep artesian wells that have an awesome report. The suspect that reason for my discoloration is mostly due to the older lines that used to transport brook water throughout the town.

Hey ! @@Tobinindustrial Brook water ? That sounds bad for making Tea. In London England, one uses evian to make tea, to have a perfect cup, compared the the processed water that comes through the faucet at the kitchen sink. Mind you if you go to McDonald's, for a cup of tea, you're paying for Thames Water, they make tea from the local supply of water. Have A Nice Day.

Save the planet, re-use that water; poor it into you bathroom floor drain or you shower recess drain, it will remove limescale to some extent, in those locations too. Wash it all down after it soaked; make sure no one can come into contact with that (harmless) solution, after the cleansing regime. Have A Nice Day.

Where I live all water is drawn from chalk ground so therefore everything scales up rapidly, not nasty just annoying as after washing anything there will be a haze of calcium over stuff. Anything acidic will remove it nicely. Is it just me or does water taste odd from a plastic rather than stainless steel kettle?, probably me. Cheers, Sam.

Typically the element is made with high quality metal so it should clean up fine. Some mineral deposits, however, seem harder to clean off the element. As for the plastic, it always seems to clean up well.

Try coke or anything similar that has an acidic quality. We don't usually have soda products in the house so I use Vinegar. There are also some store bought cleaners like CLR, etc that may do just a good a job. Just be sure to rinse well before using. Also, I think orange juice or lemon juice may work just as well.

You possibly have corrosion (rust) that has eaten the coil surface and/or stained the inside plastic to a point where it may need a heavy scrub. The danger of doing that is that you scratch the plastic and cause more physical damage to the surface. There is possibly no remedy for that unless you replace the kettle.
