How To Clean A Roasted Maple Neck
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
This might be useful if you have an unfinished Roasted maple neck or fretboard that you want to clean.
You may want to do it differently, This is just how I do it.
DO NOT do this on a finished neck!

You are a god send of the guitar community thank you! Ive been looking everywhere on how to clean one
Thank you for this and all your videos. Great channel keep it up my dude.
Keep in mind that what a lot of people think are unfinished roasted maple necks actually have a satin nitro finish. This is the case with the Charvel DK24. People think it’s unfinished, but it has a satin finish. So, while the instructions in this video are great for truly unfinished necks, this might damage a satin finish.

Sir, you just saved my guitar.
Great video. Only thing I would note to people is to be careful when putting masking tape on your finish when masking pickups. This can sometimes cause the laquer to come away a bit when you take it off on some finishes. I would recommend painters tape as an alternative.
Bruh deadass was just looking for this. I love you!
GOOD job KDH!
Broooo you have no idea how much I needed this!!
you literally posted this at the perfect time for me. I recently got a guitar with a maple fingerboard and was beginning to think about how to maintain it
I really wanted to get one, they look so cool.
Thats super nice. I love roasted maple! Very helpful!
Good info. Another thing you can do after trapping the metal filings, if you have one laying around somewhere, I always take an old pickup and run it over everything. This picks up any loose shavings that might get attracted to the pickup after you pull the tape up.
Thank you couldn't have uploaded this at a better time
You the real MVP dude. I seen you in uncle judys video 🤘
Amazing video, it really helps!
Well done, great guitar by the way.
Great straight to the point video
Great tips, thanks man
Having just bought a guitar with a roasted maple neck, I humbly thank thee!
Another note make sure to tape the surround of the pickups too as if any of the steel wool gets into the pickup winding it will lead to the failure of the pickup by shorting the coil. I sometimes use scotch brite to reduce risk of this.
That was a actually quite helpful. I'm guessing it would safe to use the same steel wool on a unfinished rosewood or ebony fretboard?
I definitely needed this video. my fretboard is looking a little grimy and does need a touch up. would you recommend even using a touch of music nomad F-oil afterwards with using the steel on ONLY the fretboard?
thanks for the new technique i mask the fretboard when cleaning and polishing the frets but when applying fretboard cleaner and restorative to the fretboard I have nothing covering the frets now I know to just apply a sharp knife to mask the frets 🤟🏻
Thanks for this! Any advice on using oil for fretboard and/or neck? Thanks KDH!
thanks for the video. Do you use any oil to condition the fretboard? I feel mine is terribly dry.
Thanks for the Video! But does a flamed/backed maple fretboard need any hydration. I mean should I use some Oil or should it stay "dry"? PS: Subscribed 🤟
the tape over tape trick is so good!
Thank you so much
sweet shirt my dude. Thanks for the tips
Steel wool doesn't hurt the frets and in fact is the best way to polish them. I've done this for almost 40 years with zero issues.
I like the tape over the filings tip 👍
Literally bought a sterling jp150 with a roasted maple board yesterday and was looking for info on cleaning and oiling.
Can, or should you, oil the fretboard after cleaning?
Scotch brite pads work just as well w no metal filing left
Hm. This is really helpful tho for someone with a roasted maple neck. You've done a great job! Maybe something on floyds would be helpful? Like a grouped up "how to maintain tuning stability on a floyd" video. Actually, you know, group videos might be a good idea, like "ways to clean different fretboards". The algorithm should luke longer stuff. Although.. This is not the main focus of yoyr channel, so nevermind. Anyways, always happy to see a vudeo from you, thanks!
Great video. Thank you. Just curious, is that a Warmoth neck?
Any idea if a bit of lemon oil on a unfinished roasted maple fretboard is ok? My fretboard has some spots that are a bit paler/drier and I thought a drop or two of oil could make the look more even.
Can I use lem oil on roasted maple necks?

Hey, your help was very useful, thank you very much 👌👌👌 I wanted to ask a question, I'm thinking about buying a Charvel Pro-Mod DK24 HH 2PT CM Poplar Burl Transparent Black Burst, its neck is caramelized maple, my question is, can you change the color of the fretboard and make it darker?
Couldn't get any more Irish than a green White and gold star. It's like an Irish version of Chris Holmes! Awesome.
Next how to clean gloss finished fretboard and neck plz
No oil afterwards? Also how to clean a maple glossed fretboard? Great stuff brother!!
Can you clean it with the dunlop 65 2-step fretboard cleaner after the steel wool process? Or would that damage the fretboard?
Nice video, do you have any similar advice for guitars with a floyd rose? I find it difficult to clean the fretboard if I change the strings one by one.
I'm looking at getting a Ibanez GSA60-WNF. It's got a maple neck with a bound purple heart fretboard, not sure if it's roasted or not. I heard that you shouldn't use oils on a light maple neck. Not sure about this one.
Great vid. What is the best alternative for steel wool? I really hate that stuff.

I've always used the edge of an old credit or gift card. Not hard enough to scrape the board, but hard enough for gunk.

I bought this harley benton telecaster vintage guitar from a seller and it's a great guitar got it cheap. I don't like the carmelized maple neck. Can I lighten the color back to a maple or maybe lighten it up?
would 0000 steel wool also work for cleaning the fretboard?

That's for muting the strings between the nut and the tuners. When you're using a high-gain tone and chug hard, those would produce a ringing sound.

I was told by manufacturerof my guitar to use only a light (with demineralized water) moisted microfibre cloth to clean the fretboard of my roasted maple neck and fingerboard. Don't let it get too dirty. Clean every time you restring your axe. Avoid any Oil! (and very dry and hot air - otherwise the wood may crack)
how would cleaning a satin neck differ from this method? is it not possible because of how thin satin is? if so, should i just use a damp cloth or something?
Esto es lo que necesitaba, preciso
THANK YOU!!!!
👍👍👍 2:36 oh my, this second layer of tape is so ingenious! Now I don't need a second magnet anymore!
I have a flamed maple, unroasted neck. I want to strip the finish off as it's taking away from my fret height.. (11 coats) Could I leave the neck raw and just maintain it in the same way as your sis in this video?

I don’t think it makes much sense to use lemon oil on roasted maple. It’s wood that has had most of its moisture removed. Lemon oil would be just introducing moisture back into it.

Can I use music nomad f one oil on my roasted maple?
A lot better than what I was doing. I use an old credit card to scrape the finger gunk off, then apply f1. I let it sit for 15 seconds, then I run in with a microfiber cloth. For frets, I use the same card, which has a rectangular fret "slot" I cut with an exacto knife. I line the fret up with the slot and scrape with super fine steel wool. The plastic around the slot keeps the board from being scraped.
Can you oil a roasted maple fretboard?
Thanks 4 Video :) Great Stuff. I just did this to my ESP LTD Arrow which i bought used,. I couldn't get rid of all the dirt without making slight (so slight u cant see em unless in right light) "scrathes" to Ebony Fretboard. This 0000 stuff really dusts alot so the pickup covering is needed. The Macassar Ebony wood was open after my treatment and boy it sucked the conditioner more n more :D But damn it all looks new now with shiny strings, after some paint (Black FR wasn't that black anymore) , polishing and finalizing it with (Dunlop) Carnauba Wax. I basically had to tighten everything and so on,. full maintenance :) Springs need a drill next i need to tighten them though,.. Took a whole day haha.
I fucking love you
Fretboard looks dry can you use guitar lemon oil on it.
Bravo. !!!
It's crazy took me 20 mins to find this useful video. Most when search for freboard the result gave me clearn frets, i don't want to clean frets or just clean fretboard, anybody can clean easily like WTH youtube? I want to get rid of roasted fretboard! thanks
Can this be done in any other fretbaord material?
Another with no maple necks in my guitars haha but is there no need to oil maple? or yours just didn't need it?
Nice vid. Every day closer to the 36... THOUSAND suscribers
I don't know any guitars with unfinished roasted Maple necks, so I'm sort of ignorant to all this. Do you not need to put any kind of oil or conditioner in the wood after you clean it?
I don't own this... watched it anyways for the youtube algo. Gotta get the ball rolling
Should I oil it?
Is it not good to apply lemon oil on it?
Awesome video! Can I use 0000 grade instead of 00000?
I nearly bought a roasted maple prs se but opted for a second hand tribute sg
I've also heard you can use lighter fluid to clean maple necks.
wow you released this 5 days after i got a guitar with a roasted maple fretboard.
It is absolutely no problem to also clean the frets with steel wool, many people do that and mask the fretboard off. 00000 grade is the finest, usually people use 0000 grade for frets, so no need to mask the frets in my opinion and experience. But great tip with adding another layer of masking tape on the steel wool filings in order to trap it. I will steal this one from you, thank you!
Am I a bad person for not cleaning mine?
Are those Warmoth neck and body?
Might be a niche video but for one it can help you decide if you are willing to go through the cleaning process should you buy one, some people might assume it's extremely labor intensive to preserve it's appearance, which it doesn't seem to be. It will give you knowledge should you eventually buy one. It could also help if you ever have a friend, or band mate, who owns one. I always try to soak up as much guitar knowledge, even if it is trivial, as I can because you never know when one of your trivial guitar facts will come in handy.
my fret bored is dirty af thanks bro
Can steel wool work like that on any guitar neck and fretboard?
@ASCII_68
3 жыл бұрын
If your wood is not finished with paint, yes. Otherwise you scratch your finish off. (you can give your factory new neck a vintage feeling if you steelwool your neck from 3rd to 7th fret for a used look, because it takes years to play the finish off with bare hands ;-)
The tape trick is smart.
My pickups attracted steel wool shavings a while ago, despite me covering the pickups with masking tape and granted, it was only 1 layer. Do you know what I can try to remove those shavings from my pickups?
@KDH

I doubt a magnet would work unless it is much stronger than the magnets in the pickup. That might work but I’m not sure. You can use steel wool to clean your frets. Just make sure to tape off the fret board when you do because you will be going across the grain of the board when polishing frets.

Google the model of your guitar and it should tell you. It’s likely normal maple. This method of cleaning is only for roasted maple.
Is that a Warmoth guitar?
I sanded one unfinished rough neck smooth with steel wool, so don't rub it much.
oh well, I use steel wool to polish the frets to a shine, so you don't really need to mask the frets, even if they are nickel silver.
