Thanks, this was a big help! I did two Verizon FIOS remotes tonight, and cracking the case open was the most mysterious part until I watched how you used the knife. Excellent instructions!

Another way to check the remote's operation is to point it at an AM radio. Hold it close to the radio and push the remote's buttons, one after another. You'll hear an interference-type noise through the speaker as the remote control interferes with the AM radio's reception. Every button should make a noise. If it doesn't, that button's contact surface is in need of some cleaning.

Great video! All our remotes could use a bit of a cleanup. Have you ever worked on a Verizon Fios remote (model RC144 5302 / 00B)? I found one screw in the battery compartment, but can't get the remote to come apart. I'm not sure if I'm just not putting enough torque into it, or if it was designed so it wouldn't come apart. I'm hesitant to be too aggressive, just in case it was meant to stay in one piece (so the company could get more $ out of customers for replacements).

at first i thought what screw. then i found it. i thought it was the + symbol in the battery symbol. i used 3" putty knife and just stuck it in and pushed and wiggled and one edge snapped out. im so afraid of SCRATCHING things when it comes to prying. i HATE prying. but so far, no scratch. a putty knife is nice because it is perfectly straight, narrow, and not sharp like a knife.
