I am a gamer and i also am on a very tight budget. When i said I'd rather buy more important stuff i meant things directly affecting your pc performance. My 10$ keyboard mouse combo works just fine but my 10$ cpu cooler isn't ;)

To clean the area around/under the keycaps I recommend using an old (cleaned) toothbrush. Let it dry first if you want to get rid of dust, crumbs and pet fur, or use with warm water or isopropyl for liquid spills. I just finished cleaning off my main keyboard using that method. Thanks for the video Paul!

Best guide! I watched this upon release and prayed I'd never need it. A friend dropped Coke Cola on an ASUS ROG keyboard that has Cherry MX speed silver switches, an analog volume controller and some membrane multimedia keys. I got I to work again by fully taking it apart and soaking the bare PCB/plate/switches combo on warm water and dish soap. Also the case. Gently rubbed it with a soft brush (used for cleaning under one's nails). After thoroughly rinsing, used the alcohol inside the switch method to make sure the water inside would evaporate. Turned the board upside down and pushed the switches with my palm to help liquids get out. After 36hs of drying it works like a charm. Needs lubbing on the stabs, but that aside, it's like new

"Mom, stop asking me why my keyboard is in the dishwasher"

  • @Real_LiamOBryan
    @Real_LiamOBryan9 жыл бұрын

Logitech suggests, at least on their G-series keyboards, if you spill liquid on the keyboard, that you *DO NOT* tip it upside down to get the liquid out. The keyboards come with spill channels and drainage holes which will allow most liquid to flow out, and because of the keycaps you won't get liquid in your switches. What liquid is dried on, from non-water liquids, can be easily cleaned out later. If you flip it upside down, then the liquid may get inside the bottoms of your keycaps. When you turn the keyboard back over, it may then run down into your switches. I don't know a ton about keyboards, though I've had each of mine apart a few times, so take my advice with a grain of salt.

Wild_Gaming It is a great keyboard. That is what I have too. My only complaint is the occasional double space from the spacebar and the coating peeling off of the keycaps. I spilled sugary coffee in mine a couple weeks back. All I did was let it sit. I'm too lazy to clean it out again, since I already cleaned it about 2 weeks previous to that. However, the right control key is sticking a little. The first press every couple of days is tough, it has to break loose. Other than that, though, everything works fine.

bbryant0620 Yea after what I did to mine the left shift is a little tough which makes some games a little tough like CS:GO... Mine doesn't double space, also the coating hasn't come off of mine at all. Might be because you have had yours a little longer, I might upgrade to the corsair K70 RGB though

I worked IT at a small company and we had an old dishwasher that we removed the heating coil from and ran the plumbing to a big jug of distilled water. We took dirty keyboards, gave out loaners and ran the washer, then letting them air dry for about two weeks just to make sure. The contaminants on the contacts are what you really have to watch out for. Mechanical keyboards are a different story though, there's a lot more tiny spaces for water to intrude.

For folks not looking to disassemble but mostly just a light dusting type clean to remove hair or random dirt that air dusters can't remove try a normal run of the mill paint brush. Helps having it off for a more aggressive clean without worrying about random keys doing something while on but yeah, just run it back and forth up and down between the rows normal the brush is stiff enough to drag any minor hair out or dust which gives it a nice clean look without fully taking it apart if that's all you are looking for.

So I've been having a problem with TKL mechanical keyboard (without numpad). It started with the key '7'. The problem is that, the key doesn't register i.e. when I tap on it normally, it doesn't registered. I have to tap hard or multiple times to get the key registered once. It was fine when it happened with the key '7' as I didn't used it that much. But recently it happened with the key 'N' and key 'T'. And you can imagine how frustrating that can be. Just count the times I have typed 'N' and 'T'. Yes, when it happens to a new key, the previous key gets fixed, in this case '7' and 'N'. Or sometimes what would happen is that when I tap the previous affected key, it gets registered twice or thrice, for ex : when I tap 'N' once, it gets typed two or three times in a row. It keeps jumping around between keys, now spacebar is affected as well. So, should I clean my keyboard? Or get it checked out from the manufacturer? I see it's a bit dirty, but I wanna be sure that cleaning it will actually help me, instead of spending all that time and get nothing at the end. The keyboard is one year old btw. PS - Don't worry about me, I typed this comment on my phone.

apocalypseap it's just that it either doesn't register at all, or registers twice, and usually lags behind other keys, it's just slow. I also notices, when I was testing the key, that when I hold on it softly, it registers n's ok, but when I put a little more force on the key, it will not register AT ALL. What to do, if you need more information I will be glad i someone helps me :( it's appreciated.

I spilled a bottle of apple juice on mine and now realize the worse thing I did was turn it upside down to drain it. That only caused the juice to get up under the keys and into the switches, requiring key removal and cleaning each individual switch. I could have saved myself a lot of work by keeping it upright and just unplug it. Then spray it down with some non-residue electronics cleaner. The keys act like umbrellas over the switches so just let if run off sideways, don't flip the keyboard upside down.

I had never spilled a drink on any keyboards ever and had only ever bought average quality (cheap) ones. I finally bought the K90 and 2 weeks later I spilled a full glass of sweet sticky Madeira wine all over it. When I tilted the keyboard wine was running out of the volume control. It took me over 8 hours to take it apart, clean it and put it back together. I even had to separate the membrane switch array for the function keys because it wicked up wine. I ended up cracking a couple of caps because the caps were really on there and I didnt have a removing tool. I would not recommend turning the keyboard upside down with the caps still on because any fluid around the keys will flow up under the cap and then when you put the keyboard back down, it will flow down the stem and right into the switch itself and they are a bitch to get clean.

Thank you for this video and link to Ripster's guide. I've had an old first gen Razer BlackWidow Ultimate with Cherry MX blue switches sitting in my closet for a couple of years now, after having spilled some soda on it, and even after disassembly and cleaning, having been unable to get some of the switches to work 100% like they had prior to the spill. Now I have renewed hope to dig that keyboard out and give it a solvent bath to see if it can still be saved. It'd be nice to be able to use that $150 keyboard again as a backup or test bench keyboard. I've been using a Mionix mech keybd in it's place, and really can't stand it. The Cherry MX "black" mech switches feel like mush.

Take all the keys off carefully with a butter knife or plastic spudger and throw them in pickle jar or big tupperware with a sealing lid. Add few drops of dishsoap and some hot water and shake them up for a few minutes. Leave em soak for 10 minutes then shake again. Drain the soapy water and rinse until the water runs clear. Pat the keys down good and leave them out on a towel for a few hours to dry. I aim a box fan at them to speed up the process. Keys should be sparkly new and if you weren't rough with the shaking it won't damage painted keys. Use Q-tips, paper towel, and some alcohol to clean the tray under the keys. A little warm water can help if there are sticky spots like drops of soda and stuff. Wipe down the whole chassis with a little glass cleaner or a damp cloth for a nice surface and to remove any fingerprints or weird stains. Use your phone to google a picture of your keyboard to put it back together. I do this maybe every few months to every 6 months depending on how bad my keyboard gets. I'm clean but have sweaty hands so eventually there is some build up of gunk. This method takes a few hours but is thorough and my keyboard seems to stay cleaner longer than just wiping it down. A good project for a quiet day off. Been doing it for 17 years haven't had a problem yet.

I spilt a lot of tea on my Corsair K60 (almost identical to the one in the video). I followed almost the same procedure as you describe, however some keys generated multiple characters or wierd false codes. I disassembled the keyboard entirely, removing all the little screws, including the one hidden behind the corsair label and the one hidden to the right of the volume control (found that out by googling!). I unplugged the various cables and removed all the circuit boards, leaving on the main board. I tried cleaning with water and alcohol. It was left to dry then I partially re-assembled it (no keycaps or case). Many more keys now worked correctly but I was getting sets of 3 adjacent keys which were giving the same false character. I think that I will try flushing with distilled(?) water to get underneath the PCB then leave to try. I looked for a replacement K60 on Ebay and was shocked by the price. If your keyboard survived the coffee spill with no ingress to the PCB area then you were very lucky.

distilled or de-mineralized water is a good idea as it will leave no mineral deposits, thx for the idea personally if they recommend putting little water in the switch with straw I can't see how putting all of them in a water can hurt make sure to press each of them a few times and then turn them upside down on a towel and let the water seep out and dry I might even try something like wd40 bath....might ruin the tactileness of tactile switches though I did a coffee spill and about 5-10 were affected so I might try that with them....still have about 20 spare switches

@@HeadBassVTEC Ha ha I see you commented on a posting I made 4 years ago. The keyboard works and is connected to my old PC. I did eventually buy a new Corsair keyboard, but I hated the LEDs and the weird layout of the numbers, so I swapped the caps from the old Corsair to the new one :-) . The old keyboard was eventually fixed with more cleaning, but my memory is foggy. I do remember that all the tiny screws were a right royal PITA !

The straw really helps me with that pesky backwards slash key (below your backspace key) not responding or “chattering” (double typing, I press it once it it does this: “\\”) when pressed. Just pressing and blowing on it doesn't work, using a straw with a droplet of water to depress it, wet it and blowing through it so that the air directly goes into the keyswitch seems to work perfectly.

Microfiber towels is pretty much the panacea for cleaning anything. It's really effective, doesn't scratch the surface at all, and doesn't leave a lot of moisture behind if used wet.
