Hi, Lynn from DentaKit.com here. If you have a Hawley retainer, it's important to clean it properly so it won't smell or get a buildup of white plaque.
But before we get into that, you should understand that there are two types of Hawley retainers -- and they need to be cleaned differently.
One type, which looks like this, does NOT contain any extra metal pieces which are soldered on. The metal looks totally smooth.
The other type, which looks like this, DOES contain extra metal pieces which are soldered on. See those globs that the arrows are pointing to? That's the solder. And if your retainer has solder, you cannot soak it every day. I'll go into more detail on that in a minute.
(Cleaning Hawley Retainers with No Metal Solder)
If your Hawley retainer looks like this, and does NOT contain metal solder, you can clean it with any of the retainer cleaning products that we carry at DentaKit.com. That means you can use Retainer Brite, SonicBrite, DentaSoak, OAP Cleaner, or the Cleanse Freshen Go products. Just choose the product that best fits your needs. If you're concerned about persulfate allergies, then choose DentaSoak, OAP Cleaner, or the Cleanse Freshen Go products, because none of those contain persulfates.
(Cleaning Hawley Retainers That Have Metal Solder)
If your Hawley retainer DOES contain metal solder, listen up, because you need to be careful. You cannot continually soak a Hawley retainer that has metal solder, because soaking will eventually make the solder break down and crumble off, and that could ruin your retainer. If your retainer has metal solder, you can soak it initially a few times to remove white plaque buildup, or soak it once in a while, but that's all. To clean it on a regular basis, we suggest Cleanse Freshen Go spray and a soft toothbrush.
But don't let this get you down. Sometimes the soldered pieces on a Hawley retainer are considered extra little add-ons and aren't totally necessary for good retention of your teeth. If your retainer has metal solder, you may want to ask your orthodontist whether the soldered-on pieces are really necessary. If not, he can take them off for you, and then you'll have more options for cleaning your Hawley retainer.
