Getting familiar with carbs, and learning how to clean them is one of the most important things you could learn on a bike. It really helps with tuning and troubleshooting. Sometimes you could get a bike cheap that won't start, and it could be as simple as cleaning the carb.

@@TheMxFactory My son and I went to Hardrock in Ocala for New Years Eve. My son went out, and the bike started running like crap after the first lap. It would start and run, but would not want to rev. The minute you hit the throttle, it would want to die, as if it were starving for gas. I removed the carb, removed the main jet, and blew through it. This mucous rubber jelly came out, right onto my finger. Blew some carb cleaner through the jet, and the rest of the carb, and replaced. Started and ran like a champ. Big lesson for my son. It helped him realize the importance of understanding a carb, and knowing the general function of your bike, even if you are not a "mechanic." If I was not able to do what I did, the consequences would have been significant. 1) The day and riding fees would have probably been wasted. 2) I would have had to take it to a shop. 3) Spend who knows how much to get it fixed. 4) Shops often keep you bike for a week, even for the simplest things. 5) Dropping it off at the shop, and then picking it up from the shop. That's why I love these bike build videos, where us regular folks could add to our knowledge and understanding of our bikes.

I am no mechanic, but there is something else that I've learned that I wanted to share. When I needed a bike to basically ride along with my little guy, I tried keeping the cost down and found a pretty good 2002 XR250R. Older bikes often come with some issues that pop up now and then. One issue I ran into was a leaking carb from a sticking float valve ... just peeing from the bottom. I went round and around taking the carb apart and cleaning, then rebuilding, and the issue would be resolved temporarily, but would resurface quickly. What eventually took care of the issue was polishing the float valve seat. After my experience, I would not clean a carb, or especially rebuild a carb without taking this extra measure. Here is a video that addresses the topic. kzread.info/dash/bejne/rKCZ3MGhlNK9ic4.html

One tip I wanted to share is using JIS screwdrivers for Japanese bikes, especially when working with soft bolt heads like on a carb. JIS is something I didn't know about until recently. You are much more likely to strip the head by using regular phillips screwdrivers. It's a very subtle difference, but could make the difference between stripping or not. Just look for the little dimple for when you should use JIS. kzread.info/dash/bejne/mXmruLeTopjeqLQ.html

@@warrenlange6106 Phillips kinda cuts it if things aren't tight, but the minute you have to apply any kind of real pressure, you're like, what the heck. I would look at the Keihin carb on the side of the carb as confirmation that I wasn't dealing with a cheap Chinese knockoff. I used to be perplexed, until I found out about JIS.

My bike won’t even kick over with a clean carb. I have spark and 160lbs of cylinder pressure. I may have messed around with the carbs air screw and fuel screw a bit so now I have no idea what the settings should be at to kick over. How much would it cost to have a shop get the carb sorted for me?

Easy way to work on 2stroke carburetor is to disconnect the throttle cable from the throttle tube. By disconnect cable from throttle tube and housing, will free up the cable making giving penalty of cables slack to disassembly a eas. When reassembling carburetor us a pick at the cable end to lock the cable in the proper position / tension once the slide is connected pull cable tight,

Because water can cause rust or mix with the gas. If you want to bath it down as an extra precaution id suggest getting a small bottle of gas, sometimes I use an old dish detergent bottle obviously rinsed out really well and ill use gas to bath and rinse the carb. That works well. Also you could just buy an ultrasonic cleaner and solution at harbor freight for cheap.
