I have recently acquired a vintage brass (not silver) baritone that is showing its age with lots of tarnish and gunk on the exterior. What steps would you recommend, short of taking to a shop and having them re-lacquer it, to help look (and hopefully) play a little better. Also one of the valves has a few small pits in the piston. Is that a serious issue for a non-professional musician?

What polishes do you use and in which spots do you use them?

Hi, do you need to put the silver polish on as I do not have any or is it a option

My band teacher recommended this video I'm just curious would this process also work for a trumpet because that's the instrument that I play. Also where can you get the valve cleaner.

Hey! This will work for a Trumpet! Just make sure that you don’t use silver polish if it’s not a silver horn.

Hey, I play the tuba and I have to use the school's so who knows the last time someone cleaned it but I was wondering if you have any tips or suggestions on what to do about stuck slides? All of them besides the tuning slide are as if they have been glued in place and I'm not too sure what to do about it

Same condition except I can open at least 6 slide things. For you, I would take it to a shop that cares for brass instruments. They will clean ever inch, get your slides slidy again, replace anything that isn't working effectively, and if the offer it, they can take out dents. Although it costs money, you do have the option of trying to diy although taking it in to a shop will be the most effective way in your situation.

Talk to your band teacher and get them to take it to an instrument repairer. Trying to move stuck slides can result in breaking welds and a bigger fix required.

Thanks for doing this tutorial. I've been playing the Euphonium for 4 years now and I've never learned how to properly clean my instrument (that's probably a problem). Though I do have a question, wouldn't the water ruin the metal? Because, you know, moisture getting stuck and causing mold, or am I just being a complete idiot? (I'm especially worried about boiling the mouth piece)

Thanks for checking out the video! Hope this info helps you out moving forward! Water does not ruin the brass. The interior of your horn is hardly ever totally dry (spit, oils, condensation). The water doesn't cause mold because, even when it is in a place you cant reach to dry, when you start to play again your air will move the moisture to a spot where you will most likely blow it out anyway. The water that you clean it with is also pretty clean. You see mold build up when players do things like drink soda and play, because the sugar and other chemicals eats away at the brass. I have been bathing my horn and boiling the mouthpiece for at least ten years now and have never seen any adverse affects. Believe me, with how much my horn and mouthpiece cost, if I thought I was going to hurt it I wouldn't be doing the things I do in this video.

I'm glad you asked your question and he answered it because I never really gave the whole process no mind. Thanks I like the boiling of the mouth piece and valve cleaner those were new for me. Using cold water after you boiled the mouth piece worried me but I trust what I saw haha.

Hey, I have a gold plated mouthpiece and am a little concerned about boiling it, since It is a soft metal. Is is safe to boil it? Thanks.

I have been boiling all of mine and it has worked out. The one I show on this video was gold actually.

I use a silver plated horn, but somehow there is a small spot on my horn in the bell that has lost its plating. I'm not sure if I should go and still wash it since it REALLY needs a cleaning. But I don't want the water to get under the plating and ruin the metal under the plating. Should I take it to a shop to see if they can do something? (I live near a very good shop run by a brass guy) Or will I still be ok cleaning it myself?

Water can't damage brass.

I play that instrument but its gold and its a 4 valved euphonium

Derick Figueroa awesome!!! This is actually a 4 valve too! However, most professional Euphoniums have a 3+1 valve system where the 4th valve is on the side. If you look closer you can catch it in some of the clips 😎
