How to chop drum breaks with eurorack modular for jungle/dnb (feat erica synths sample drum)

Hey y'all, today I wanted to do a breakdown of the way I have been chopping drum loops on the Erica Synths Sample Drum to make fast drum breaks for jungle and drum and bass style music. I am using the Robaux SWT16+ and Noise Engineering Mimetic Digitalis to sequence the triggering and slice position of the Sample Drum but you could really use any sequencer to acheive a similar effect. In this video I wanted to illustrate how modules like the Mimetic and this little 2 hp Eurorack Hardware module E-OR which you can interact with after programing a beat can add tons of playability to an age-old technique of chopping breaks!
Here is a full version of the track this break was used in: • Eurorack + 1010 blackb...

    i thought i was never going to be able to make it work and you hinted me what i had wrong. So to make CV select the slices : -slice the break, C-0 (0V) first slice, C#-0 2nd slice, D-0 3rd etc -go to CV menu, assign a knob to SL-IDX and HOLD SHIFT (trigger 2 buttton) TO MODIFY THE KNOB TO 1V/Oct! finally.. i had thought about selling the module many times as i wasnt figuring that out...

    Yes that is an important step that is not easy to find in the manual, good point. There are a few hidden functions that had me scratching my head at first but once I figured them out I haven’t had to pull out the manual again

    This thread is about the importance of the settings for setting the input range for the CV inputs, by holding shift you can change from +-5V, +5V, v/oct, etc by holding shift and turning the knob to tell the sample drum what kind of signal you are sending in to sequence the slices. I personally set it to +5V and use unquantized CV to step through the breaks but this user is mentioning that if you are sending in a v/oct signal, you have to set it to v/oct

    Thanks for the love! If you have a computer, a cracked version of Ableton or Renoise and some Ned Rush videos will get you more than most hardware can offer. For less than the price of a good computer I would recommend: old AKAI MPC (2000, 1000), M8 Tracker, 1010 blackbox, Polyend Tracker

    How do you sidechain a bass line using the kicks from the breakbeats? I Simulated a very similar setup in VCV Rack before I commit to building one out and the main issue I'm running into is how muddy the low end is with a Nuero bassline. Randomly triggered breakbeats have me stumped for how to implement sidechain ducking

  • @varial303

    @varial303

    Good question, I know how to do that with Ableton’s compressor where you can use an eq to make it trigger on certain frequencies (like a de-esser). You could replicate it in modular by multing the breakbeat signal, sending it through a LPF to carve out only the kicks, and then sending that into the sidechain input. In my case I don’t sidechain the bass to the kick (sometimes do it in Ableton after) but I do have an additional kick module that I sidechain to cut out the kicks from the breaks using a disting

  • @varial303

    @varial303

    2 жыл бұрын

    Not exactly, but with the slicing you get control over the timing of when each hit starts and then you can control the tuning separately. often you have to fiddle with the tuning and the envelope to get it to sound right but it works well with a variety of tempos and tuning settings

    Sounds excellent! The workflow looks like so much fun. I imagine some time does go into preparing / loading the drum samples to the Erica. How is that process?

  • @varial303

    @varial303

    Жыл бұрын

    Thanks a lot! Yeah I wanted to focus on the fun workflow in this video but the sample processing is really not too bad. I basically only choose breaks between 140-170 and ideally a perfect 1-4 bar loop. Then I have to convert them to 16 bit for the sample drum but that’s the only processing I do in the computer. Then I just dump them in the sample drum and use the interface to load them up in banks of around 4 different breaks and then slice them all up into even 1/8th note slices by selecting either 8, 16, or 32 slices depending on the bar length. Then you are good to go and can reuse the bank in future tracks, might just have to adjust the pitch and envelope to get it to sound smooth with the tempo you are at

    One can replicate this workflow on Ableton using chopped 8th notes similarly in a simpler and using random and probability for triggering various slices the same way. Wonder what else could be done further than that.

    That’s a good point, I’ve always found the setup kind of confusing but I’ve seen some people do some cool stuff with breaks using the midi devices. Would be cool if you got it saved as a group of devices so you could just drop new samples into it and get to chopping without much set up

    also wondering the same thing as "gradient echo." So is there no need to tempo sync your break beats because you are slicing them accordingly and thats what makes the beats line up to the rest of the song. Such a novice question but would really appreciate any input. I love this video!

  • @varial303

    @varial303

    2 жыл бұрын

    no good question, i was curious about this before i got the sample drum. yeah you are exactly right important thing in this case to get the tempo to line up is making sure the beat is sliced to the same timing as the triggers you are sending into it. It seems to work best for me to slice the beats into 1/8th notes (8 slices for 1 bar sample, 16 slices for 2 bar) and sending an 1/8th note trigger into the input of the sample drum and the clock of my sequencer (mimetic). this way even if the tempo is faster than the original tempo of the sample, it will just cut off the end of the slice and play the begining of the next slice which doesnt sound bad with drum samples. then you can use the tuning to slow and speed up the sample separately from the tempo of the triggers, and the envelope to shape the volume of each slice, so you can make the fades between them smoother. hope this helps, thanks for the support!
