How to Choose the Perfect EDC Sling for YOU

I've reviewed a lot of slings, and my biggest fear in making ANY product reviews is that some of you fine folks may make a knee-jerk purchase decision when your own unique needs are completely different than mine, so in this video, I want to share the 5 STEPS to choose the perfect EDC sling for you - meaning, it's not a product review, but rather, just sharing the points of consideration I make to avoid buyers' remorse.

One of the loves of my life, the S-Biner by Nite-Ize is inarguably my absolute favorite BUDGET EDC item. 10/10 recommend if you EVER use ANY bags, lol:

4:55 Decision 4
I feel like I could've expanded on a few points, so here are my additional thoughts:
My point on tear-resistance is that any sling worth its salt (even budget friendly ones) have more than enough tear resistance for the average person's everyday carry use-cases. Unless your job or specific outing (like bushcrafting) has tremendous risks of sharp edges and points coming in contact, virtually any sling (especially well-reviewed ones) are resilient enough to tears in my opinion.
For water resistance, same deal as above. I think the average person will try to duck out of heavy rain as soon as possible. Reading product pages will let you know if the company feels they've chosen water resistant fabrics, and reading reviews will validate their claims further. Aquagaurd zippers are still NOT waterPROOF - and if you want to check out the waterPROOF sling I use for beach days (and pack along for camping trips), you can check it out on Amazon here:

Currently loving my Aer Day Sling. Went to Thailand a few weeks ago and had my passport inside my sling during the Songkran Festival. Would advise to put your passport inside the sub-compartment just for extra protection. I wouldn't say no if I were to win the Bellroy though!

Grateful for your video reinforcing many of the lessons I've learned after purchasing four slings so far. One important decision for me, which you briefly addressed, is the strap length. Being a big guy, this is an important consideration. I appreciate the great review and camera work of this video showing how a sling can have attachment points rather than permanently attached points for the strap. That capability is now now on my list of decisions when considering my next sling.

While I do appreciate internal organization features in a bag, the cavernous main compartment is more important to me since I use pouches to segregate my stuff. It would be nice of the Chimera was reproduced again.

Chimera is based on the Belroy Venture 6L they also have bigger 9L versions. It’s very close to the original with added improvements. I own both (was one of the lucky few to snag the Chimera on launch).

@@lokaphilif only they created a 9L version of this Chimera sling as well. I have also luckily purchased the 6L Chimera sling but the material feels abit thick and heavier than my 9L venture sling. It’s less flexible than the normal venture slings as well. The chimera’s big compartment is also quite restricted due to the harder build quality.

  • @lokaphil

@@cavan_goh_reviews I totally understand what you mean. My only gripe with the new Chimera 6L is the strap gets twisted up all the time. Otherwise I totally understand the heavier material choice, I'm also finding its thicker however I love the new 6L sizing. It fits my iPad 11 much better and can even fit a SteamDeck which there was no way that was going to happen on the old version. I'm personally thinking I might just sell my 9L sling as well and double down on this new one.

  • @cavan_goh_reviews

@@lokaphil just an advice: don’t dispose your 9L venture sling away. The material is so thin so it’s actually foldable and easily packed into your luggage/baggage when travelling overseas. Or once you pass customs check you can take the folded venture sling out of your baggage and put all your EDC stash back into that sling once unfolded.

The KP - Keep Pursuing crossbody sling has been my go-to bag since 2018. It deserves special mention for its compact yet spacious design, accommodating all the everyday items a man might need. It features a hidden third pocket for wallets and sensitive documents, an easily accessible smartphone compartment with extra padding, and a main compartment with various organizers, including a case specifically for glasses. Additionally, it offers a very useful feature for cyclists: an extra buckle that stabilizes the bag on your back.

The 3rd inner compartment is a must for me. I keep my wallet and passport (if applicable) in that compartment. I put the most used and least precious on the outer in case I run into sticky fingers. The main compartment has to fit the ipad pro 11" at most and at minimum a Nintendo Switch. Anything bigger than the iPad would need to be a backpack for me as it would end up becoming heavy once fully packed. I really like the removable strap as most of the mainstream slings have fixed anchor straps. I wish they made this more available as slings are of higher demand. Great content and solid breakdown of sling needs. I've found myself looking and buying slings only to find that I needed a bigger size or better layout. Video definitely helps remind me of the non negotiable things I need for a sling. Cheers and good luck to everyone.

True on all points. I have been using a 2L for my everyday carry. It has 3 zippered pockets. But when I travel, the 2L is not enough to hold passports, cash, and other miscellaneous travel stuff. I love the look of Bellroy but concerned about the magnetic clasp. I got the 5L Pakt sling. The size is large enough for me to bring me and my husband’s passport, cash, sanitizing spray, and other misc travel stuff. Only complaint is that it doesn’t have the 3rd zipper pocket where I would like to store my phone when not in use.

Maurice! I love your videos my friend... im wondering what your thoughts are of the Chimera so far? it seems like it is the perfect bag for me but I have a few questions... is the main pocket really slightly bigger than the regular venture? How do you feel about the strap? Overall where does it rank on your list? My main cary is my travelers large size notebook, wallet, phone, 2 small cameras (they both fit in the standard size one) and my AirPods, passport a few other very small items like a battery and memory cards. Is the Chimera the grail? (our load outs are so similar)

When was this video made? I think it’s pretty shady that belroy’s marketing strategy is designed around artificial scarcity where they intentionally “sell-out” and then have influencers give away this allegedly in demand item. I was able to get into the queue immediately 5 hours after they first opened sales. I highly doubt they sold out anything and belroy is trying to create this halo effect around their items to justify large markups. I guess that’s the nature of the business now. 95% marketing and 5% quality
